POWDERVILLE - Earl Van McGill, 95, of Powderville, died Tuesday, July 20, 1999, at the Powder River Manor in Broadus.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 24, at the Powder River Congregational Church in Broadus with interment in the Valley View cemetery. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Broadus is in charge.

Doris H. Toffoli
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Doris H. Toffoli, 78, passed away July 21, 1999.
Doris was born in Seattle and raised in Billings. A registered nurse, she was an Army veteran of Nurse Corps (Lt.) in World War II and served as an evacuation nurse in the South Pacific. She resided in Duluth, Minn., from 1946 to 1960 and has many relatives there. She moved to Arizona 39 years ago from Minnesota.

She is survived by two daughters, Mary Shurtleff of Murrieta, Calif., and Terry Bland of Arvada, Colo.; a son, Daniel Toffoli of Scottsdale; a sister, Marian Baide of Billings, and six grandchildren.

Graveside service will be Monday, July 26, 1999, at 11 a.m., at the National Memorial cemetery at 23029 N. Cave Creek Road in Phoenix. The Messinger Mortuary & Chapel of Scottsdale is in charge of arrangements.

Arthur J. Wanger
GLENDIVE - Arthur J. Wanger, 90, died Wednesday, July 21, 1999, at the Glendive Medical Center Extended Care Facility.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 24, at the Chapel of the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home with interment in the Dawson Memorial cemetery.

Bernice Wheeler
KINGMAN, Ariz. - Bernice Wheeler, 86, formerly of Sidney, Mont., died Monday, July 19, 1999, in Kingman.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, July 23, at the Lonsdale Methodist Church in Sidney with graveside services at a later date.

Julie Ann Treitler
SANTA FE, N.M. - Julie Ann Weber Treitler, 29, of Santa Fe and formerly of Sheridan, Wyo., died Tuesday, July 20, 1999, at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Albuquerque of cancer.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Sunday, July 25, at Kane Funeral Home in Sheridan. Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday, July 26, at the funeral home with interment in the Sheridan Municipal cemetery.

Marguerite Sewell
LIVINGSTON - Marguerite "Peggy" Sewell died Tuesday, July 20, 1999, at Livingston Health & Rehab Center.
Family and friends will gather at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 26, at Franzen-Davis Funeral Home to proceed to Mountain View cemetery for graveside committal at 11 a.m.

Maxine Helen Dwyer
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Maxine Helen Dwyer passed away on July 18, 1999, at her home in Las Vegas after a lengthy illness.
She was born at home in Circle, Mont., on Jan. 6, 1922, the daughter of Max and Grace Lehman. She attended elementary schools in Circle and Chicago and graduated in 1939. From 1939 to 1942 she attended the College of Great Falls and the University of Washington in Seattle. Maxine taught at the Meyers rural school and junior high and P.E. at Circle. During WWII she trained as a civil aeronautics communicator at Santa Monica, Calif., and was employed at airports in La Grande, Ore., The Dalles, Ore., and central monitoring at the Smith Tower Annex in Seattle.
On Feb. 5, 1944, she married James Dwyer in Circle. They lived in Circle until the end of WWII and after James' discharge from USN, they moved to Wolf Point in 1946. Maxine worked as a tutor-aide at Immaculate Conception Parochial School and established the central library there and also at Wolf Point South and Northside schools. She was awarded a B.S. with a library minor from the College of Great Falls. She received her credits for this degree from CGF, University of Montana, Northern Montana College at Havre, Rocky Mountain College at Billings, EMC at Billings, U of Washington, U of Utah, and the U of Wyoming at Laramie.
For 13 years she was assistant librarian and head librarian at the Wolf Point High School, retiring in 1983. Since her retirement she traveled extensively with Jim to visit children and family. Maxine enjoyed historic sightseeing, particularly in Montana, and was an avid sports fan, particularly baseball, and a very avid bridge player.
She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church and was very active in her church, community and school. She was a member of St. Catherine's Altar Society, Catholic Daughters, American Legion Auxiliary, College of Great Falls Alumni Association, Montana Retired Teachers Association, Senior Citizens of Wolf Point and was a member of the Wolf Point Historical Society and worked several summers helping at the museum.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Donald; and a son, Thomas Max Dwyer.
Survivors include her husband, Jim of Las Vegas; two sons, James P. (Connie) of Helena, Mont., and Norman Paul (and friend, Julie) of Chicago; three daughters, Ellen J. (David) Mayher of Renton, Wash., Mary Ann (Don) Callahan of Grand Junction, Colo., and Jeanne G. (Mike) Childers of Las Vegas; three brothers, Gene (Emmy) Lehman of Boring, Ore., Alan Lehman of Seattle, and Norman (Ruth) Lehman of Tillamook, Ore.; a sister, Gretchen (Duane) Peterson of Farmington Hills, Mich.; 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Visitations will be held at the Clayton Memorial Chapel in Wolf Point on Friday, July 23, from 9 to 8 p.m. with a vigil service at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 24, at the Immaculate Conception Church in Wolf Point with the Rev. Father Steve Zabrocki officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood cemetery.

Gene A. Ennis
SHERIDAN, Wyo. - Gene A. Ennis, 77, died Monday, July 19, 1999, at Sheridan Manor.
Cremation has taken place and at his request, no services are planned. Champion Funeral Home was in charge.

Conrad Joseph Hanson
HELENA - Conrad Joseph Hanson, age 59, passed away in Helena, on July 13, where he had been in the Veterans Hospital at Fort Harrison. His remains have been cremated, and a memorial celebration of his life is planned for a later date.
Conrad was born April 3, 1940, in Savage, the son of Mildred and Henning Hanson. He attended school in Sidney where he was graduated from high school in 1957. He spent his summers with his maternal grandparents and aunt and uncle in Flaxton, N.D. He earned a B.S. degree at Montana State University in Bozeman in 1961, was an ROTC commissioned officer and served for two years in the army, including one year in Korea. He earned an MBA degree from the University of Montana in Missoula.
Following his schooling, Conrad engaged in many enterprises, including the Forest Service in Great Falls, sales in Missoula, farming in eastern North Dakota for 10 years, and the music entertainment business in Billings. He was an accomplished pianist, guitarist, and singer, playing in his own and other bands and as a one-man band with a devoted following. He produced a music tape along with several other musicians. He and his former wife, Anne, researched and produced the Original Self-Guiding Little Bighorn Battlefield Road Auto Tour tape.
Conrad is survived by his daughter, Milli in Minneapolis; two stepchildren, John and Lynn; his sister and her husband, Janet and Jim O'Connor of Spokane; and his nephew, Dan O'Connor of Pullman, Wash.
He will be forever missed by his family and friends and remembered with great fondness for his musicianship, his wonderful voice, his intellect and widely-read knowledge, and his wit, sardonic at times but always clever. He was truly an individual, and we'll cherish our memories of him forever. Now Conrad belongs to the ages.

Thaddeus J. Nickels
NASHUA - Thaddeus John Nickels, 19, of Nashua, died Saturday, July 17, 1999, in Fort Hood, Texas.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 24, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church with interment in the Nickels family cemetery. Bell Mortuary of Glasgow is in charge.

Sharon Y. Olson Pierre
LARAMIE, Wyo. - Sharon Yvonne Olson Pierre, 35, of Laramie, died on Sunday, July 18, 1999. Sharon was born Feb. 15, 1964, and raised in Billings, daughter of Ray and Mary Olson. On Dec. 21, 1985, Sharon married John W. Pierre and is the mother of Denise and Brian Pierre, all of Laramie.
She was graduated in 1982 from Billings West High where she was a record-setter in track and cross country. The love of running long distance stuck with her over the years. She found delight in going out for a run in Laramie hills with the family dog, Grace. She attended MSU-Bozeman, but completed her B.S. in electrical engineering in 1991 at the University of Minnesota.
Sharon and her family moved to Laramie from Minnesota upon her husband's completion of his Ph.D. in 1991. Sharon quickly developed a strong attachment to Laramie and Wyoming.
Sharon's greatest loves were her family, God, and her fellow man. Never knowing a stranger, she quickly made friends at home as well as all over the world where she and her husband traveled. By her quick and radiant smile, her kind words, and her generous actions, she was an encouragement to all whom her life touched. She was devoted to her lay ministry: St. Paul's Newman Center, St. Matthew's Soup Kitchen, and St. Laurence School. Sharon was an exceptional homemaker, gardener and cook. Her trademark cinnamon rolls will be missed by the many with whom she so readily shared. Sharon's work carried the stamp of love as she was a truly wholesome, diligent, conscientious, and intelligent young woman.
Sharon was a tender, gentle soul who is greatly missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her husband, John; their daughter, Denise (13); their son, Brian (10); her parents, Ray and Mary Olson of Billings; and nine brothers and sisters and (spouses): Michelle Olson of Billings; Don (Karen) Olson of Redlands, Calif.; Karen Olson of Billings; Denise Frey of Hingham, Mont.; Debbie (Mike) Sevier of Glendive, Mont.; Diane Olson of Billings; John (Joyce) Olson of Billings; Paulette (Jack) DeLeonardo of Billings; Kristie Olson of Billings; John's parents, Don and Mary Pierre of Bozeman, Mont.; his brother, Michael (Barb) Pierre of Bozeman; his sister, Louise (Jim) Weldon of Eagan, Minn.; along with 16 nieces and nephews and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Sharon was preceded in death by her brother, Tim Olson.
The family requests the prayers of Sharon's friends and that any memorial gifts be made to St. Laurence School Foundation at 604 S. Fourth, Laramie, Wyo.
Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated Thursday, July 22, 1999, at 10 a.m., Father Roger Schmit, OSB, celebrant, at St. Paul Newman Center, 1800 Grand Ave., Laramie. Burial will follow at Green Hill cemetery. Thereafter, a reception will be held at St. Paul Newman Center. Montgomery-Stryker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ruth Lorraine Rustad
BAKER - Ruth Lorraine Rustad, 81, of Baker, passed away on Tuesday, July 20, 1999, at the Fallon Medical Complex in Baker. She was born on Dec. 27, 1917, the daughter of Mike and Esther Hanratty O'Donnell. She grew up and attended the O'Donnell Country School in Fallon County.
As a young girl she worked at home and for numerous families in the community helping out with taking care of the young or old. Ruth was married to Mervin E. Rustad in Baker on Nov. 9, 1940. For a short time while Mervin worked with the Montana Dakota Utilities they lived near the Gold Butte area. They returned to the Rustad Family Farm where they began their career in farming and raising their family.
In 1990 Ruth and Mervin moved into Baker where Ruth had made her home since that time.
Ruth's life was devoted to taking care of her children as well as many others in the community. She enjoyed raising chickens and being able to give the eggs to family and friends. Ruth was very devoted to keeping a diary that she kept up daily. She also enjoyed dancing, welcoming new couples to the Ollie community, and mending clothes for anyone.
In the last few years Ruth would help take care of many people and visit many friends in the complex and nursing home. She was a member of the Ollie Homemakers Club, a charter member of the Pink Ladies Auxiliary, a 4-H supporter and a member of the St. John's Catholic Church of Baker.
Survivors include two daughters, Marilyn Askin and her husband, Rodney of Baker and Rosalie Ferestad and her husband, Dan of Shelby; a brother, Herbert O'Donnell and his wife, Carole of Baker; four sisters, Mary Petersen of Billings, Rose Myhre and her husband, Everett, and Marge Koenig and her husband, Art, all of Baker, and Betty Shuck and her husband, Bob of Rhame, N.D.; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She also is survived by a daughter-in-law, Dude Rustad of Marmarth, N.D.; two sisters-in-law, Erna O'Donnell of Baker and Ruth Mary O'Donnell of Canyon Ferry; a brother-in-law, Gordon Rustad Sr. of Baker; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her parents; her husband, Mervin; a son, Wayne; five brothers, Raymond, Francis, Howard, Jackie and Robert; and a granddaughter, Joy, preceded her in death.
Vigil Service will be held on Friday, July 23, 1999, at 7:30 p.m. at the Stevenson's Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, July 24, 1999, at 11 a.m. in the St. John's Catholic Church with Father Freddie Moniz officiating. Burial will be in the Old St. John's Catholic cemetery. Stevenson's Funeral Home of Baker is in charge of the arrangements.

Doreen Schlehuber
DIAMOND LAKE, Wash. - Doreen Schlehuber, 43, passed away in her home on July 5, 1999, surrounded by all of her family.
Doreen was born in Jacksonville, Fla., on Dec. 27, 1955. Her parents are Donald and Thyra Reins. Doreen was educated at Little Creek Academy, Collegeville, Tenn., and Southern Missionary College. She married Craig Williams and they had two children, Mathieu Kent Williams and Sara Danielle Williams.
She married Dane R. Schlehuber in Villa Rica, Ga., and they had Katelyn Joy Schlehuber. They moved to the Spokane area in 1990 where Dane worked in the drywall contracting business.
Doreen was a devoted mother and housewife. At an early age she committed herself to Jesus as her personal Saviour, and believed deeply in the resurrection at His soon coming and was a member of Diamond Lake SDA Church. She bravely and valiantly battled several types of cancer for almost five years, never once complaining, even when in constant, terrible pain. We who survive are so glad she no longer suffers.
She is survived by her husband, Dane; son, Mathieu Kent (Shannon) Williams and special grandson, Gavin James Williams of Spokane; daughters, Sara Danielle Williams of Spokane and Katelyn Joy Schlehuber of Diamond Lake; by her parents, Donald and Thyra Reins of Jacksonville Beach, Fla.; father and mother-in-law, Clifford and Rhoda Schlehuber of Billings; brother and sister-in-law, Dale (Colette) Schlehuber of Columbus, Mont.; brother, Donnie Reins Jr. of Wisconsin; by nephews, Cody and Troy Schlehuber; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services for Doreen were held on Sunday, July 18, 1999, at Diamond Lake Seventh-day Adventist Church. Pastor Lloyd Perrin officiated. Interment will be in the Mountain View cemetery at a later date.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Spokane, P.O. Box 2215, Spokane, Wash. 99210, or charity of choice.

Irene Venable
MILES CITY - Irene Venable, 93, of Miles City, died July 12, 1999, at her son's home in Gresham, Ore.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 24, at the Grace Bible Church with interment in the Custer County cemetery. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home is in charge.

Willard P. 'Bill' Walrath Sr.
TOWSON, Md. - Willard P. "Bill" Walrath Sr. passed away in Towson onTuesday, July 13, 1999.
He was born in Boon, Mich., on June 26, 1913. Bill was the president of E. H. Walrath & Sons Inc., a family-owned country elevator business, begun in 1932, with plants in Montana, Wyoming, and North Dakota. He was a resident of Bridger and then Billings before moving to Maryland following a serious illness in 1997. He was a combat veteran of WWII, having served as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division in Europe.
Mr. Walrath was preceded in death by Josephine, his wife of 57 years; a brother, Howard; and a sister, Francis Pinnegar. He is survived by his sons, W. P. Walrath Jr. (GerriKay) of Scottsbluff, Neb., and James D. Walrath (Rebekah) of Bel Air; brothers, Henry of Spokane, Wash., Jack of Billings; and sisters, Marjorie Johnson of Billings and Madelyn Overby of Union, Wash. Bill had five grandchildren: Wendy Lehman of Rio Linda, Calif.; Paul Walrath of Pueblo, Colo.; Peggy Jo Frazee of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Benjamin Walrath of Bel Air; and Jeremy Walrath of Baltimore. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Kyler and Logan Joe Frazee of Sioux Falls.
Memorials may be sent to the Montana Rescue Mission, 2822 Minnesota Ave., Billings, Mont. 59101.

TOWNSEND - Susan Ann Bender, 41, died Tuesday, July 20, 1999, at Broadwater Health Center.
Graveside Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 22, at Deep Creek cemetery. Connors Funeral Home is in charge.

Bernice 'Be' Carlson
SHERIDAN, Wyo. - Bernice May "Be" Carlson, 78, died Sunday, July 18, 1999, at Sheridan Manor.
Cremation has taken place and graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 22, at the Elks cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is in charge.
