Myron, also known as Jim by many, was born June 11, 1898, in Cedar Rapids, Neb., the son of William and Mary (Baird) Baker. The family later moved to Powell, Wyo., where he spent his early life. At the age of 14, Myron went to work at a local bank, helping with the book work and doing janitorial chores. As there were only two employees at the bank, he was the "second in command."

By age 16, Myron excelled in baseball, and because of his reputation as a second baseman, he was "enlisted" into the National Guard and played baseball for them in Powell. His unit was called up for a tour of duty in Mexico during the Pancho Villa uprising, but his parents arranged for his honorable discharge from the Guard because of his age. During World War I, Myron went to the University of Wyoming at Laramie to attend officer training school with the U.S. Army. The war ended just prior to his appointment as second lieutenant, and he was honorably discharged.

In 1918, Myron moved to Reed Point and worked in one of the last homestead banks which still stands as part of the town architecture. He later moved to Roundup and worked in banking. While there he met Gertrude Heatherington, the daughter of a Garfield rancher. In 1927 they were married on the family ranch. The couple later moved to Winnett where he was president of the local bank. Myron also lived on the west coast and worked as a salesman in the wholesale grocery business.

In 1946 he returned to Montana and was an accountant for the Bureau of Indian Affairs at Polson. After his retirement with much recognition from his fellow employees in 1964, he and his wife spent their summers in Polson and their winters in Mesa, Ariz. Gertrude died in 1978 and in the 1980s Myron came to Livingston. He has been a resident of Frontier Personal Care Center since 1989.

Myron's intelligence never diminished, especially as it related to his interest in banking and investment matters.

Survivors include his son, William Baker and his wife, Donna of Livingston; nephews, Stan Baker of Prescott, Ariz., and Don Baker of Escondido, Calif.; a niece, Mary Anne Price of Carlsbad, Calif.; step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Tony Veach, Marlene Remy, Ron Remy, Millissa Hawk, James Neary and Kaitlyn Hawk. In addition to his wife, Myron was preceded in death by a brother, Paul, and a daughter-in-law, Glendola Lemon Baker.

Memorials in Myron's memory may be directed to the charity of the donor's choice.
