Clella Leora Brister
Clella Brister, beloved mother of Carol Ashmore and Dr. Lin Brister, was carried gently and peacefully to her Heavenly Father on Friday evening, July 9, 1999. She was 78 years old and had lived in Billings for 25 years. She was born in Broken Arrow, Okla., to Ethel Jordan Greene and Alfred John Greene on Sept. 2, 1920.
She attended Oklahoma Baptist University for three years. Typical of Clella's courage and determination, she had arrived as a freshman on campus with one dollar in her purse and a suitcase with dresses sewn with fabric from used clothing.
While at OBU, Clella met and married Zeb Linston Brister, a ministerial student. She completed her BA and had her first child while Linston earned his doctorate of theology at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. They spent two years pastoring a church in Texas, during which time their son was born. They then returned to OBU, where Clella enjoyed her role as the spouse of an OBU faculty member.
Throughout the following years of ministry in churches and in Baptist student work, Clella was a dynamic and well loved partner in ministry with Linston, working enthusiastically and effectively. She particularly loved children and devoted much time and energy to teaching them as well as to meeting physical and emotional needs of many of them. Another cause close to her heart was mission education for all ages. She served as State President for the Kansas Baptist Women's Missionary Organization.
Though she faced severe mental and physical difficulties during her lifetime, Clella maintained the ability to express her love for her children and other family members and friends. Her methods of expression were often bizarre and mysterious but recognized and appreciated just the same!
"Mother, you taught us how to love passionately and unconditionally. God and His Son, first of all, and our family members and friends. You also showed us how to love people we have never met, regardless of race, creed, or physical or mental condition. You empowered us with your assumption that we would be the best that we could be and that there was nothing we could not accomplish with God on our side. You made life joyful with your lively, quick wit, and your excitement in every activity, whether work or play."
Survivors include one daughter, Carol Ann Ashmore and her husband, Bob of Billings; one son, Dr. Zeb Lin Brister and his wife, Clair of Tulsa, Okla.; three sisters, LaVera McGrew of Tulsa, Winogene White of Midwest City, Okla., Reatha Schlegel (husband Bill) of Choctaw, Okla.; two brothers, Raymond Greene of Owasso, Okla., Bill Greene (wife Barbara) of Norfolk, Va.; four grandchildren, Brian Ashmore (wife Jennifer Zartman) of Billings, Michael Ashmore of Seattle, Wash., Lori Brister of Tulsa, and Brandon Brister (wife Paula) of Tyler, Texas; and three great-grandchildren, Luke, Eric, and Paul Ashmore of Billings.
