MISSOULA - Robert Bruce Ammons, former professor at the University of Montana, passed away on May 21, 1999, at his home in Missoula. The family invites friends, former students/colleagues, and the public to a free organ recital by Betty Waddell, in his memory on Saturday, July 17, at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 201 S. Fifth St. W, Missoula. Thereafter will follow a circle for friends and family at Garden City Church of Christ, 345 S. Fifth St. W.

Randy Charles DeTienne
GLASGOW - Randy Charles DeTienne, 47, of Glasgow, died Thursday, July 8, 1999, in Saint Vincent Hospital in Billings.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, July 12, in First Baptist Church of Glasgow. Burial will be in Highland cemetery, Glasgow. Bell Mortuary of Glasgow is in charge of arrangements.

Geraldine 'Jerry' Dotson
SIDNEY - Geraldine "Jerry" Dotson, 79, of Sidney, died Saturday morning, July 10, 1999, at the Sidney Health Center Extended Care Facility.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, July 12, in the Peoples Congregational Church. Interment will be in the Sidney cemetery. Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney is in charge of arrangements.

John W. Lindeman
John W. Lindeman, 83, of Billings passed away at his home on Thursday, July 8, 1999.
John was born on July 12, 1915 in Linton, N.D., one of nine children born to John and Kate (Roesler) Lindeman. Following his graduation from high school in Linton, John began work with the steam locomotives of the Milwaukee Railroad. After 10 years of employment he was called by the U.S. Army in January 1943 and served his country in Normandy, Northern France and Central Europe. John received three Bronze Stars during his military time.
Shortly after his enlistment, John married Leah A. Woehl on Oct. 30, 1943 at Fort Camp Robinson in Little Rock, Ark. Following his discharge in 1946, the Lindeman's returned to Linton where John continued his work for the railroad until 1955. The family then moved to Billings where he worked for Burlington Northern as a freight dock foreman until his retirement in 1975.
John and Leah traveled throughout the world in their retirement years. In Billings he was a devoted member of the Methodist Church, with he and Leah both working at the Youth Camp on the Boulder and attending Shiloh United Methodist Church since it's origination. John loved his family and was very proud of his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Leah; two sons, Timothy Lee of Missoula and Randal Dean of Riverton, Wyo.; his grandson Bradley and granddaughter Michelle of Billings; a brother, Clarence Lindeman of Linton; and three sisters, Nyla Carlson of St. Paul, Minn., Virginia Killeen of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Dorinda Schiermeister of Hazelton, N.D. John was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and two sisters.
Visitations will begin Monday morning at 9 a.m. at the Smith West Chapel, 304 34th Street West. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 13 at the Shiloh United Methodist Church, 1810 Shiloh Road, with military rites and interment to follow at Terrace Gardens cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Shiloh United Methodist Educational Building Fund. Smith West Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Delphine "Della" Lorenzen Osterdyk
Della Osterdyk, 65, went home to her heavenly Father Wednesday July 7, 1999 in St. Thomas, N.D., after suffering a heart attack. She was born Aug. 25, 1933 in Dayton, N.D., to Clyde and Elizabeth Lorenzen. Della married Casey Osterdyk on Dec. 25, 1957.
Della enjoyed being a wife, homemaker, mother, and grandmother. Her life revolved around taking care of others. Della was also an avid Mustangs and Bulls fan and enjoyed tending to her flowers. She loved taking care of other children and was known as "Grandma Della" to many. She wrote wonderful poems for her church and was the church secretary for many years. She will always be loved and remembered by all.
Della was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Duane, Billy, Jerry and Steven. She is survived by her husband, Casey; sons, Kirk (Connie) Osterdyk, and Scott Osterdyk; daughters, Jane (Herman) Barta, Judy (Terry) Mattson, and JoLynn (Jim) Fellows; grandchildren, Chad Barta, Terry Jr., Matthew, and Andrew Mattson, James and Holland Fellows, and Alexandra, Alston, Aidan and Addison Osterdyk.
Viewing will be 9-4 p.m. Monday at Cremation or Funeral Gallery, 8th St. W. and St. Johns. A funeral service of remembrance will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Alliance Church, 1835 Central, Billings and interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. A luncheon will follow at the church. Arrangements were made by Cremation or Funeral Gallery

William James (Bill) Pokarney
POWELL, Wyo. - William James (Bill) Pokarney, of Powell, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, July 9, 1999 in Sunlight Basin at the age of 78. He was born in Fromberg, Mont., on May 14, 1921, the only child of Margaret Louise and Joseph John Pokarney, both deceased. His mother died when he was 5 years old and he was raised by his loving aunt, Mamie Rahrer. He married Helen Kathleen Walrath in April 1942. They had two daughters, Vicki (1943) and Janice (1948) and celebrated 49 years of marriage before her death in 1991. He married Irma Brown of Cody in 1991.
He proudly served his country during World War II entering the U. S. Army in December 1942. He was a member of the Persian Gulf Command, stationed in the Middle-East, where the command engineered and constructed transport routes to move military supplies during WWII.
After military discharge in 1945, he and his family lived in Basin, Wyo., and Belfry and Bridger, Mont., before moving to Powell in 1964, He opened the Belfry grain elevator for E. H. Walrath and Sons in 1949 and was the general manager of all operations for E. H. Walrath & Sons until his retirement in 1986. Although serving E. H. Walrath and Sons in numerous capacities since 1949 as the company grew, his most outstanding contributions were to agriculture and the community of Powell. He will be remembered by his family for his never-wavering support, his ability to build or repair anything and his generosity to his family7 friends and those in need. He loved the mountains and was an avid fisherman. He was a member of the Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge and Elks Club.
Mr. Pokarney was the driving force in the establishment of the Swallow Foundation at Northwest College in Powell, having convinced his cousin, Clarence Swallow, to bequeath his estate to benefit the students of Northwest College. The foundation provides scholarships in agricultural studies and nursing to students from Montana and Wyoming.
Survivors include his wife, Irma (Obert-Brown)) of Powell; daughters and sons-in-law Vicki and John Buxton, Houston, Texas and Janice and Neal Bloomenrader of Powell; grandchildren, Laura Bloomenrader Riter and husband Richard of Neeham, Mass., and Joseph Glenn Bloomenrader and fiancee, Kate Simonich of Salt Lake City and his faithful pet and companion, Dudley.
Those wishing to make memorial contributions may direct them to the Powell Senior Citizens Center, the Powell Boys and Girls Club, Caring for Powell Animals or a charity of choice.
A private burial will be conducted at the Rookvale cemetery. At his request, there will be no memorial services.

Joseph F. Worthington
After a long and courageous battle with congestive heart failure, Joe passed away July 9, 1999. He remained alert and caring until the very end of his life.
He was born Nov. 20, 1927, in Billings, to Dora (Dode) Fulton Roberts and Joseph F. Worthington. He graduated from Billings Senior High in 1945. He then joined the army and was stationed in Japan.
Joe was sports-minded and very athletic. He started bowling at the age of 8 and continued bowling throughout his life. He was a proud member of the Billings Bowling Hall of Fame and the Montana State Bowling Hall of Fame. He was an avid golfer and was a charter member of the Laurel Golf Club. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 4 and the Unity Church of Christianity.
Joe loved music, dancing, joking, cards and gardening. He had a zest for living even though his health had failed.
He retired from the Continental Refinery in 1980 after 29 years.
He was preceded in death by both his parents and many good friends. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Phyllis; two stepdaughters, Candy (Jerry) Capp and Denise (George) Kelly; two grandchildren, Nicole (Chad) Croaker and Ryan Jackson; one sister-in-law, Norma Peers, and nephew, Randy Peers.
Joe leaves behind many wonderful friends and relatives. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Visitation will begin 12:00 noon, Sunday. Funeral services will be held Monday, at 1 p.m., at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist, with interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Mary Louise Burnett Breshears
Mary Louise Burnett Breshears, 78, died at Aspen Meadows Retirement Home Wednesday, July 7, 1999. She was born to loving parents, Charles A. Burnett and Grace L. Pratt, on Nov. 2, 1920, in Sumatra. Mary was raised in Sumatra, just east of Roundup, where she graduated from high school.
On Sept. 2, 1939, Mary was united in marriage to Clyde Breshears in Billings. Mary found great joy in being a wife and mother and in her devotion to God. She was an amazing housewife who had an exceptional gift for loving her children and cooking. When Mary was not attending to her family or volunteering she could be found enjoying her hobbies - gardening (especially flowers), sewing, or creating arts and crafts.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Shiloh Methodist Church. Mary was known to all as a very independent person who especially loved children. She had the strong personality of a survivor, someone who made it through numerous medical crises. She was one of the first survivors of open-heart surgery, in 1951, at Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, Minn.

In the 1970s, Mary worked in the Food Service Department at Broadwater Public Grade School and loved being with the children at lunch time. She also volunteered at Western Manor Nursing Home, creating a loving environment for every resident she visited. Mary will be missed by her family and anyone who ever had the pleasure to meet such a spirited and generous lady.

Mary was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Leah Talbot in 1982; by her sister, Florence Hopkins; and by three brothers, Clifford, Everett, and Wilbur Burnett.

She is survived by her loving husband, Clyde Breshears of Billings; daughter, Dr. Kay Talbot and her husband, John Sandlin of California; son, Jim Breshears of Camarillo, Calif.; sister, Charlotte Cutler of Roundup; and numerous nephews and nieces.

Mary's family would like to give a special heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff at Aspen Meadows for the loving care and exceptional treatment they gave Mary during the five years that she made Aspen Meadows her home.

Visitation will be Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 12, 1999, at Shiloh United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. The family requests that any memorial donations be made to Shiloh United Methodist Church's Building Fund, 1810 Shiloh Road.

Joy Graham
MARMARTH, N.D. - Joy Graham, 87, of Marmarth, died Wednesday, July 7, 1999, at the Fallon Medical Complex in Baker, Mont.
Prayer services will be at 7 p.m. Sunday, July 11, at Stevenson's Funeral Home in Baker. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, July 12, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Marmarth with interment in the Riverside cemetery.

Robert E. 'Bob' Lucas
SANTA ROSA, Calif. - Robert E. "Bob" Lucas, age 60, of Santa Rosa, formerly of Miles City, Mont., lost his courageous battle with leukemia on July 4, 1999.
Robert E. "Bob" Lucas was born on June 17, 1939, in Miles City, the son of Pete and Helen Lucas. Playing the piano since the age of 3 and starting his first jazz band at age 13, Lucas entertained tens of thousands of friends and family across the Western United States throughout the years. During the past 22 years, while living in Sonoma County, Lucas played his music and performed at countless benefits, raising money for causes from seniors to kids, Aids to cancer. He directed the Russian River Jazz Festival for three years in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Owing to a lifelong interest in journalism, he started a weekly paper in Guerneville, which he sold several years later.

Over the years, Lucas also played with his friend and mentor, Dave Brubeck, and many others including Steve Allen, Henry Mancini, Dinah Shore, and Eddie Fisher. As a vocalist and pianist, this "jazz man" as he was affectionately nicknamed, warmed the hearts of all who had the experience of hearing his music. His jazz music will be sorely missed and he will be forever remembered for his generosity, love and wonderful sense of humor. Although living in California, he never lost his love for Montana, and at his request is being buried in Miles City where he was born and grew up.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Pete and Helen Lucas. He is survived by his daughters: Lisa Riebe and her husband, Edgar of Seattle; Bunney Schmidt and her husband, Brad of Orem, Utah; Brigitte Lucas of Santa Barbara; a son, Brandon Lucas of Tokyo, Japan; two bothers: Jim Lucas and his wife, Carol of Miles City; Don Lucas and his wife, Ann of Polson, Mont.; a sister, Betty Larsen and her husband, Chuck of Billings; and six grandchildren: Caroline, David, Lara, Sarah, Nikki, and Calli Schmidt, all of Orem.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 9, 1999, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Miles City with Rev. Grover Briggs officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot in the Custer County cemetery. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Miles City is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may make contributions to the Leukemia Society or to the Shrine Crippled Children and Burns Hospitals.

Eugene D. Walker
Eugene D. Walker, 86, joined his devoted wife Ruth Evelyn in heaven on July 7, 1999. Eugene treasured his family, old and new friends, and the kindness of his caregivers. His gentle spirit will be missed.
Eugene was born Oct. 28, 1912, in Laurel, to Lucien and Anna Walker. After graduating from Billings Senior High School, he worked for 20 years each at Ward's City and Eastern Montana College (MSU-B). A loyal employee who took great pride in his work, he retired in 1980.

Eugene married Ruth Evelyn Featherstone on May 18, 1940, at St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral in Billings. The couple was blessed with three children: Barbara (Michael) Wagner of Billings; Richard (Mary) Walker of Gresham, Ore.; and Keith Walker of Billings.

Eugene enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. He often sat on the park bench in front of his home anticipating mail from Ruth, his letter carrier and friend. He loved spending time at the cabin in Red Lodge and was usually the last to leave family celebrations.

Eugene was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers and sister; and his wife, Ruth. He is survived by his children and seven grandchildren: Pamela, Daniel, David (Jennifer), and Holly Wagner of Billings; and Jamie, Jeffrey, and Jonathan of Gresham.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12 noon Friday, July 9, in St. Anne's Chapel at Holy Cross cemetery, with interment immediately following. Dahl Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to American Lung Assoc., 825 Helena Ave., Helena, MT 59601 or St. Vincent de Paul, 2610 Montana Ave., Billings, MT 59101.

Robert D. Field
LAUREL - Robert D. Field, 60, died Monday, July 5, 1999, at his home.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 14, at Laurel United Methodist Church. Cremation or Funeral Gallery of Billings was in charge.

Doris Willson
EKALAKA - Doris Willson, age 76 of Ekalaka, passed away Tuesday, July 6, 1999, at the Fallon Medical Complex in Baker. A Prayer Service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, July 9, 1999, at Stevenson Funeral Home in Ekalaka. A Funeral Service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 10, 1999, at the Ekalaka Congregational Church. Interment will follow in the family lot of the I.O.O.F. cemetery in Ekalaka. Stevenson Funeral Homes of Ekalaka is in charge of the arrangements.

Justin Ace Field
LAUREL - Justin Ace Field, 19, of Laurel, died Sunday, July 4, 1999, at University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 13, at the Grace Bible Church. Cremation or Funeral Gallery of Billings was in charge.

Marvin M. Anderson
EMBLEM, Wyo. - Marvin Maurice Anderson, 81, died Tuesday, July 6, 1999, at his home.
Visitation will be 1-8 p.m. Thursday, July 8, at the Atwood Family Funeral Home in Basin, and 9-10 a.m. Friday, July 9, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Burlington. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the church with interment in the Otto cemetery.

Hazel Banta
SIDNEY - Hazel Banta, 77, of Sidney, died Tuesday, July 6, 1999, at Deaconess Hospital in Billings.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 9, at the Trinity Lutheran Church with interment in the Richland Memorial Park. Fulkerson Funeral Home is in charge.

Perry C. Best
HARLOWTON - Perry C. Best, 86, of Harlowton, died Tuesday, July 6, 1999, at the Central Montana Medical Center in Lewistown.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be at a later date. Creel Funeral Home was in charge.

Leona Conroy
HARDIN - Leona Conroy, 58, of Hardin, went to be with her Lord on Monday, July 5, 1999.
She was born Feb. 12, 1941, in Streeter, N.D., a daughter of Jacob and Amelia Junker Buchfink. She moved with her parents to Hardin in 1948, where she grew up and attended schools, graduating from Hardin High School in 1959. Following her graduation, she attended Eastern Montana College.
Leona married David Conroy on Sept. 30, 1961, in Hardin and the couple made their home in Hardin.
She worked as a receptionist and later as a librarian in the Hardin Primary School. She was a caring person who dearly loved her family. Her joy in life was caring for and helping others. She was a wonderful sister, wife, mother and grandmother, who was the "pillar of her family."
Leona was a member of the Catholic Church and attended the Church of the Open Bible. Her faith and religious convictions were an important part of her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Gerhart, Eddie and Al; and her daughter-in-law, Patty.
Survivors include her husband, David; two sons, Marlo (Mary) and their son, Connor of Nevada, Kirk (Rochelle) and their children, A.J., Kyle, Shelby and Alycia of Baker; one daughter, Tara (Eric) Hope and their children, Ashlie and Cassady of Glendive; one sister, Ginny Ostermiller of Bozeman.
Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Bullis Funeral Chapel. Funeral Services will be held 2 p.m. Friday in the Church of the Open Bible. Interment will follow in the Fairview cemetery. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the arrangements.
