Apolonia 'Lonie' Smelser
SIDNEY - Funeral services for Apolonia "Lonie" Smelser, 92 of Sidney, were Tuesday, July 6, 1999, at the Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Kent Stenzel officiating. Musical selections were provided by Marlin Beyer accompanied by Carol Lohrenz. Casketbearers were: All of Apolonia's grandchildren. Honorary casketbearers were: All of Apolonia's family and friends. Ushers were Toni Smelser and Tom Eleson. Interment was in the Sidney cemetery under the direction of the Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney.
Apolonia "Lonie" was born on March 16, 1907, in Vinton, Iowa, to Alfred and Anna (Werning) Seefeld. She lived in Iowa and South Dakota most of her young life, but also spending a good deal of time with her grandparents, Mary and Frank Seefeld in Mobridge, S.D. After graduation from high school, she went to two years of Business College. Lonie was united in marriage to Rex Smelser on June 5, 1927, in Mobridge; to their union six children were born. Lonie worked off and on during her life, as a seamstress, for a photo lab, but most of her work was in bookkeeping. They moved from Iowa to Port Orchard, Wash., during the war, where they both worked at the ship yards. After moving back to Iowa for a few years the family moved to Miles City and two years later to Sidney where Rex managed Pacific Hide & Fur and Lonie worked as bookkeeper there, until their retirement in 1972. Lonie continued to work for another few years at Pacific. Later in 1980, Lonie started doing the bookkeeping for Border Steel, owned by Bill and Bret (son and grandson). She worked for them until she was about 84 years old. She has lived by herself in her home since Rex's death in December of 1983.
In May of this year Lonie moved to the Sidney Health Center Extended Care Facility, where she passed away on Sunday, July 4, 1999, at the age of 92.
Her children always enjoyed having her tell people her full name - Apolonia Wilhemina Anna Maria Seefeld Smelser, which she would tell with pride and a little embarrassment. A beautiful name for a beautiful lady.

After their children were nearly grown, Gerald and Regina divided their ranch with John and Minnie, yet remained lifelong friends with them. Regina was a natural stockman and continued to raise sheep, cattle and train stockdogs until after her husband's death in 1973. She spent her winters in Houston with her only daughter, Adele Giles until her death.
Regina was a lifetime member of the Catholic Church, the Democratic Party and very proud of her Native American heritage. It could be said that after Regina was made, "they threw away the mold."
