Edith M. Anderson
Edith M. Anderson, 96, passed away on Monday, June 28, 1999 at Valley Health Care Center of natural causes.
For the past 14 years, she has enjoyed life in Montana, enjoying weekend trips into the mountains with a picnic lunch and frequent visits to Yellowstone Park.
Edith began her life on March 19, 1903, the daughter of Samuel and Edna (Wymore) Miller on a farm in southeastern Nebraska near the small community of Pawnee City. In 1908, Edith along with her younger sister Bernice and parents moved to a homestead near Dunning, Neb. The family built a fine new three room sod house. During this time the family grew with the birth of her brother Chester. They later moved to Ravenna, Neb., where Edith attended school and graduated from high school.
In the Fall of 1925 the family moved to Grand Island, Neb. Edith remained in Ravenna and worked for the Golden Rule. Later she joined the family in Grand Island where she was employed at Wolbach's Department Store.
During this time she met a Swedish immigrant, John C. Anderson and they were married July 16, 1934. In their early years of marriage she accompanied him, to various locations in central and western Nebraska, with John's employment on the U.P. Railroad. They eventually made their home in Grand Island where their children, Ronald and Shirley, were born. Edith enjoyed caring and cooking for her family as well as sewing for their clothing needs. She loved finding and trying new recipes and would keep them in her "special" books. Edith was always busy during the summer canning and preserving fresh vegetables and fruits for later use in the long Nebraska winters.
Over the years, the family grew with the addition of grandchildren. She enjoyed having evening treats of homemade cookies with root beer or 7-Up floats. Edith loved her five grandchildren so much. She made the granddaughters sundresses from scraps of her dress material. Many evenings found her around the kitchen table with the grandchildren playing cards or games.
Edith and John were members of Trinity Methodist Church, Grand Island, Neb.
Their home had weathered many Nebraska storms, but on an evening in June 1980 the sirens sounded under blackened skies and their home fell to damage from the awesome strength of a tornado. A week later, June 15, 1980, Edith's husband John passed away.
In January 1985 Edith chose to close her home and join her son's family in Billings, Mont. She enjoyed her independent living, in her Yellowstone Avenue apartment for 12 years, until she moved to WestPark Village. In October 1998, at age 95, she experienced her first stay in a hospital. Edith missed her frequent trips to her mountains and to Bozeman to see her great-grandchildren.
Edith was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Chester "Chet" Miller; and her husband, John.
She is survived by her son, Ronald L. Anderson and wife Marcia of Billings, Mont.; daughter, Shirley Klostermeyer and husband Bill of Springfield, Va.; and five grandchildren, Mark Klostermeyer and wife Jenny of Falls Church, Va.; Kelly Shea and husband Sean of Alexandria, Va.; Tammi Klostermeyer of Austin, Texas; Kim Center and husband Ray of Bozeman, Mont., and J. Scott Anderson of San Francisco, Calif.; and her special little great-grandchildren Haley and John Center of Bozeman, Mont.; and her sister, Bernice Chaney of Denver, Colo.
