Charlynn Renae Carpentier
White Flower Woman
POPLAR - Charlynn Renae Carpentier, White Flower Woman, was born in Williston, N.D., on May 6, 1994, to Harlan Walking Eagle Jr. of St. Francis, S.D., and Ronalee Carpentier of Poplar. She was 5 years old when she died as the result of a pedestrian accident on Aug. 20, 1999, in Poplar. The Lord took her in a terrible way but did not let her suffer.
Charlynn was very friendly and loved by everyone who knew her. She was so proud to be the Badlands' Junior Princess for next year. She was the one who always gave a big smile and a wave to the crowd. Charlynn loved to go to Pow-Wows and dance. Her grandparents, Julia Young and Cody Eagleman, loved her with all their hearts and took her on the Pow-Wow Trails.
She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Harland Walking Eagle Sr.
She is survived by her parents, Harlan of St. Francis and Ronalee of Poplar; one sister, Alisa Walking Eagle and one brother, Shawn Walking Eagle both of St. Francis; great-grandmother, Raquel Menz of Poplar; grandmother, Madelyn Walking Eagle of South Dakota; aunts, Yvette White Hawk, Margaret Hapa, Julia Young and Jonelle Menz, all of Poplar. Her uncles are: Gerald Young and Robert Carpentier of Poplar; grandpas, Kenny Olson, Keith Olson, Lester Olson, Robert Olson, Levi Olson Sr. and Allen Menz, all of Poplar. She took Brad and Maureen Gray Hawk, of Poplar, as her uncle and aunt; Diane LaRoque, of Poplar, as an aunt; and Shelley Booth, of Poplar, as a grandmother. She has many nieces and nephews and relatives. Her family from South Dakota are Charlotte Walking Eagle, Joel Marshall, Wade, Allen and Eric Walking Eagle.
A wake will be held Wednesday, Aug. 25, with a prayer service at 8 p.m. with Rev. Fr. Michael Schneider officiating at the Poplar Cultural Center. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Aug. 26 at the Poplar Cultural Center with Rev. Fr. Schneider officiating. Interment will be in the Poplar City cemetery with a feed to follow at the Cultural center. Clayton Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

James M. Clark
LAUREL - James Michael Clark, 26, formerly of Havre, died Monday, Aug. 23, 1999, as a result of injuries received in a vehicle accident on Sunday.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, at the Havre Central Gymnasium with interment in the Highland cemetery in Havre. Holland & Bonine Funeral Home is in charge.

LeRoy S. Forbes
LOVELL, Wyo. - LeRoy S. Forbes, 78, died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, at New Horizons Care Center.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, in the Lovell LDS Stake Center with interment in the Lovell cemetery. Haskell Funeral Home is in charge.

Forney Edward Hay
Forney Edward Hay, 85, of Billings, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 22, 1999.
He was born on Jan. 30, 1914, in Clark, Colo. His childhood was spent in the mountainous area of Gunnison, where his father was a prominent coal miner. Forney began earning his own way, working on a ranch and riding for the Colorado Cattle Co. He came to Montana with his two brothers and they were employed by the Lissa Brothers Ideal Bakery. Forney became sales manager and remained there until his retirement in 1978.
He met his wife, Margie Banta, and they married in 1941. They have resided in their Billings home for 58 years.
Forney was especially dedicated to community affairs and the individual needs of his neighborhood. He participated in the Food Bank, Crime Prevention Council, Neighborhood Watch, Human Resource Development Council, and North Park Task Force. He was active in Optimist Club, Masonic youth groups, DeMolay, Rainbow Girls and Jobs Daughters. He was past master of Billings Lodge No. 113, A.F. & A.M., past patron of Billings Friendship Chapter No. 124, O.E.S., Honorary 33rd Degree of the Scottish Rite and was a greeter in the Al Bedoo Shrine. He was also actively involved in the activities of the First Congregational Church, taught Sunday School and was head usher for many years. He recently enjoyed being a crossing guard at McKinley School and could call each child by his name.
Forney is survived by his wife, Margie, and children: daughter, Lynette (Ted) Holmes, grandchild, Shae Elliott, and great-grandchildren, Evan, Miles and Alexis; daughter, Frances Hay, grandchildren, Cindy (Eric) Moores, Julie and Jaylin Eggleston, and great-grandchildren, Kinsey and David Moores; son, Dick (Arla) Hay and grandchildren, Trevor and Nicole; and son, Jon (Laura) Hay, and grandchildren, Breanna and Brian.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 310 N. 27th St. Interment with Masonic Rites to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until time of service at the church only.
Memorials may be made to Billings Masonic Center Endowment Fund, Al Bedoo Shrine Transportation Fund or North Park Task Force, 1210 Tenth Ave. N., Billings, 59101.

James 'Cranky' Krenelka
James E. "Cranky" Krenelka, 79, of Billings, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 1999, at home of a heart attack. He was born May 24, 1920, in Kenmare, N.D., a son of Ellis Edward and Elizae S. Souther Krenelka. He was schooled in Kenmare and married Frances Ruby Grenvik on Nov. 5, 1942, in Plentywood.
After working in the CCC camp, Jim enlisted in the U.S. Navy from 1941-1947 and was in the Naval Reserves from 1961-1981 after his Honorable Discharge. Jim was self-employed most of his life. He loved horses and enjoyed dowsing, hunting, fishing and attending auction sales.
Survivors include two sons, Peter (Doris) of Laurel and Kit (Linda) of Billings; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three sisters and two brothers. He was preceded in death by his wife and son in 1998 and his daughter in 1967.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial with Military Rites will be 10 a.m. Friday at Naval Reserve Center, 8th Avenue North and 22nd Street. Arrangements were made by Cremation or Funeral Gallery.

John C. Quintanilla
SIDNEY - John C. Quintanilla, 43, died Monday, Aug. 23, 1999.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, at St. Matthew's Catholic Church with interment in the Richland Memorial Park. Fulkerson Funeral Home is in charge.

Ingelef I. Schwartz
MALTA - Ingelef I. Schwartz, 79, died Sunday, Aug. 22, 1999, at her home of a heart attack.
Vigil services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, at the church with interment in the Malta cemetery. Adams Funeral Home is in charge.

Ingrid Solberg
CARRINGTON, N.D. - Ingrid Solberg, 85, formerly of Glendive, Mont., died Aug. 14, 1999, at the Carrington Health Center.
Services were held Aug. 17 at the Trinity Lutheran Church with interment in the Carrington cemetery. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive was in charge.

Lena Mildred Spence
GREYBULL, Wyo. - Lena Mildred Spence, 87, died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, at the Bonnie Bluejacket Memorial Nursing Home.
Visitation will be 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24, at the Atwood Family Chapel. Graveside funeral services and interment will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, in the Hillside cemetery.

Bob Burke Swecker
EUGENE, Ore. - Bob Burke Swecker passed away Aug. 18, 1999, in Eugene where he had lived for the past 10 years. He died from a heart attack at the age of 40.
He graduated from Laurel High School in 1977.
Bob is survived by his wife, Rosie; his daughters, Stephanie and Chrissy, whom he loved very much; his parents, Duane and Diana Swecker; grandparents, Alice and Earl Holt; his brother, Jamie (Lisa); his sisters, Shawna (Steve) Wegner, Jodi (Darin) Southworth, all from Laurel, and Teri (Ed) Michael from Park City; and his many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were held on Aug. 23 in Eugene.

Urma Olive Taylor
PRAY - Urma Olive Taylor, 87, died Sunday, Aug. 22, 1999, at her home.
Visitation will be 9 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24, as well as the morning of the service at Franzen-Davis Funeral Home and Crematory in Livingston. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, at the funeral home with graveside committal services in Mountain View cemetery in Livingston.

Vallie Ness Cooley
MUSSELSHELL - Vallie Ness Cooley, 97, of Musselshell, went to the arms of the Lord Aug. 18, 1999. She was born in 1902 in Caryville, Wis., and lived her childhood years there, graduating from Eau Claire Normal School in 1921. She went on to teach elementary school in Minnesota and Iowa for a number of years.
She married Earl Cooley in Aberdeen, S.D., June 9, 1927, and moved to the Cooley ranch near Musselshell and lived her entire married life there, together raising their family of three, always unselfishly giving to all - her positive attitude an inspiration. Her philosophy "If you're feeling bad for yourself, then do something good for someone else." Always supportive and active in the life of the church, with many friends and admirers, she had a great love for music and gave piano lessons to many local students. She enjoyed and shared her talent and was the church pianist for many years.
Survivors include: daughters, Carol Rowe, Earlene (Don) Davis; daughter-in-law, Mary Cooley; grandchildren: Darryl Seeley (Patty), Lea Ways (Rodger), Joni Lewis (Bill), Coral Delaplaine (Martin), Peggy McCurdy (Doug), Alan Rowe (Andrea), Scott Davis (Tammy), Skyler Davis, Dan Cooley (Connie), Brian Cooley (Gina), Darren Cooley (Stephanie), Callie Rech (Clint), and 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Fay Carey; nieces, Lois Domer (Arnold), Rita Carey; numerous cousins, and three step-grandchildren.
Her husband, two sisters, and son, John Cooley, preceded her in death.
Visitation will be held the day of service at the church from 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Services to be conducted by Pastor Lynn Rettig, Aug. 23, 1999, 1 p.m. Musselshell Community Church, Musselshell. Burial in Musselshell cemetery. If desired, memorial remembrances may be made to Musselshell Community Church, Musselshell, MT 59059.

Mary C. Goeders
EKALAKA - Mary C. Goeders, 85, died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, at her home southeast of Ekalaka.
A Rosary Vigil will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24, at Stevenson's Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church with interment in the family lot of the I.O.O.F. cemetery.

Teresa Leann Hetzel
POWELL, Wyo. - Teresa Leann Hetzel, age 9, a resident of Powell, died at St. Vincent Hospital in Billings, Mont., on Saturday, Aug. 21, 1999. Teresa was born in Powell on Sept. 9, 1989, to Louis and Vickie (Harrison) Hetzel. Teresa completed the third grade.
Rosary will be recited on Monday, Aug. 23, 1999, at 7 p.m. at St. Barbara's Catholic Church, Powell. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, 10 a.m. at St. Barbara's Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Crown Hill cemetery. Miratsky-Easton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jared Roland Kaufman
LAUREL - Our precious Jared came into his loving families' arms on Nov. 28, 1998. After nine months of joy, laughter, and much love, he was taken from us after a sudden accident on Aug. 18, 1999.
He brought such unconditional love and happiness to his parents, Mark and Kari Kaufman, and his big sister, Joslyn. They are in wonder of how a small child could have such influence in the bonding of their family and no words are powerful enough to express the love and joy that Jared brought to them.
Jared's extended family that cherished him beyond words are his grandparents, Woody and Charlotte Kaufman, "Grammy" Shawn Ham of Laurel, and Cliff and Kathy Ham of Bozeman. Great-grandparents are Roland and Ann Bratland of Laurel, Evelyn Mantley of Yuma, Ariz., and John Ham of Bozeman.
His aunts, Kirstina and Kassandra Ham; uncles, Matt, Mike (Debbie), Marshall (Chris) Kaufman; and many cousins who loved him dearly and enjoyed the time they were given to be part of his life. Jared also was loved by great-aunts and uncles, great-great-aunts and uncles, and great-great-great-aunts and uncle and generations of cousins.
He touched so many hearts in his life with his smile, personality, curiosity, gentleness and his passion to be cuddled and held in your arms.
He was our life, our love,
and our sweet little baby Jared.
We will miss him for the rest of our lives
and live for the day when we get to hold him in our arms
again.
We love you sweet little baby Jared.

Laura Odessa Peterson
Laura Odessa Peterson passed away on Aug. 10, 1999, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Dessa, as she was known to her friends, was born on July 27, 1918, in Pittsburgh, Pa., to John and Martha Howieson. During World War II, Dessa joined the Women's Army Corp (the WACs), and was the first WAC ashore in Europe. While in Italy, she met Sanford Peterson. They became engaged at Lake Como, and were married on Sept. 8, 1945, in Los Angeles, Calif. After their marriage, they moved to Minnesota, where Sandy farmed and Dessa worked as a secretary in a hospital. They had two sons in Minnesota, Henry and Sanford. In 1955, they moved to Billings where they joined the First English Lutheran Church. Dessa worked for the original Billings Hardware and for several stenographic services before beginning work for Theodore Wirth & Associates, Landscape Architects, where she continued as an office manager/administrative assistant until her retirement. Dessa was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Association, American Legion, White Shrine, Daughters of the Nile and Eastern Star. She held numerous offices in Eastern Star. Dessa enjoyed gardening, especially roses, and visiting with friends.
Sandy died in 1995, several months prior to their 50th wedding anniversary. In December 1998, Dessa went to stay temporarily with her son, Henry, in Salt Lake City. Due to failing health, she was unable to return to Billings.
She is survived by her sons, Henry of Salt Lake City and Sanford of Renton, Wash.; their wives, Susan and Linda; and grandchildren, Matthew, Joshua, Jennie and Leslie.
A memorial service will be held at First English Lutheran Church, 1243 N. 31st St. in Billings, at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 23, 1999.

Barrett Raaum
PLENTYWOOD - Barrett Raaum, 85, formerly of Westby, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 1999, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Westby with interment in the Daneville cemetery near Westby. Fulkerson Funeral Home is in charge.

Francis E. 'Frank' Savage
LEWISTOWN - Francis E. "Frank" Savage, 94, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 1999, at Valle Vista Manor of natural causes.
Cremation has taken place. Private Graveside services will be held at a later date. The Cloyd Funeral Home is in charge.

William Robert Tooley Jr.
William Robert Tooley Jr. passed away on Aug. 21, 1999, in Billings. Bill was born on Nov. 20, 1921, in Port Arthur, Texas, the son of William R. Tooley Sr. and Genevieve McGittigan Tooley.
Bill graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Port Arthur. He served as a shipfitter in the Navy during World War II and was honorably discharged Dec. 22, 1945. On Nov. 14, 1946, Bill married Myrtle Gran of Miles City in Port Arthur. Bill served an apprenticeship and became a licensed journeyman plumber in January 1947. Bill and Myrtle moved to Miles City in April of 1950 where Bill worked on the construction of the Veteran's Hospital. They moved to Billings in October of 1950. Bill passed the examination for the Montana Journeyman plumber's license in May 1950 and Montana Master Plumber's License in July 1950. He worked at the trade of plumbing and steamfitting until retiring in 1980. Bill owned his own plumbing and heating business from 1952 to 1960 in Billings. Over the years, he worked all over the state of Montana on many buildings and all types of construction pertaining to plumbing and steamfitting.
Bill was a member of the following organizations: American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Guadalcanal Veterans Association, Knights of Columbus, Moose Lodge, United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters Local No. 30, Yellowstone Democratic Club, and Montana State Democratic Party. He also served eight years on the Montana Board of Plumbing. He was Local 30's Secretary for 21 years, and was honored by a 50-year pin.
Bill is survived by his wife of 52 years, Myrtle Gran Tooley; his son, William R. Tooley III (Liz); daughter, Carol M. Austin (Pat); and grandchildren, Jeremy Austin, Damien Austin, Jasmine Austin, Christina Tooley and Michael Tooley; and a sister, Catherine Tooley Brown. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Thomas Tooley.
Visitation will begin 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Mortuary. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, Aug. 25, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Pius Catholic Church. Memorials may be made to Big Sky Hospice.
Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist has charge of arrangements.

Gavin Lyle Allen
GLASGOW - Gavin Lyle Allen, 15, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 1999, as a result of an automobile accident south of Malta.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 23, at the Glasgow High School gymnasium with interment in Sunset cemetery in Fairfield at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25. Bell Mortuary in Glasgow is in charge.
