Delores Mae Overhuls
COLUMBUS - Delores Mae Overhuls, 62, of Columbus, passed away on July 31, 1999, of cancer at home with her family by her side.
Delores was born on Aug. 21, 1936, to Mahlon and Erma Johnson in Minnewaukan N.D. She married Wayne Overhuls of Columbus on Jan. 21, 1956. She spent her life in Columbus where she and her husband raised eight wonderful children.
Survivors include her husband, Wayne of Columbus; sons: Terry Overhuls (Stephanie) of Ft. Lupton, Colo., Rod Overhuls of Columbus, Marty Overhuls (Janet) of Humble, Texas, Randy Overhuls of Ripon, Calif., Stacey Overhuls (Candi) of Columbus; daughters: Sherry Miller (Bob) of Shepherd, Texas, Cindy Overhuls of Spokane, Marci Martin (Kevin) of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; brothers: Don Johnson, Dave Johnson, Jim Johnson and Gary Johnson; sister-in-law, Vivian Peterson and eleven grandchildren.
Delores was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She enjoyed spending time with her family, sewing, quilting, cooking, music, taking care of her flowers, going to church and selling Avon. Delores was the center of her family and was loved by all who knew her. She will be missed greatly and will live in her family's hearts forever.
Visitation will be held 4-9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3 at Smith Funeral Chapel in Columbus. Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4, at St. James Lutheran Church with interment in Mountainview cemetery. Memorials to: Big Sky Hospice (Stillwater Team), P.O. Box 35033, Billings, MT 59107.

Vernon P. Schulz
BELGRADE - Vernon P. Schulz passed on Saturday, July 31, 1999, at his home in Belgrade.
Vernon was born April 3, 1926, at Marion, N.D. He lived in Marion on the family farm until 1945, when he joined military service. After his service time, he moved to Glendive, working for Consolidated Freightways and Montana Department of Highways until 1956, when he relocated to Lodi, Calif. He was employed at Westside Winery from 1956 until 1988 when he retired. Vernon moved to Sumner, Wash. in 1992.
Vernon married Lorentina (Tina) on June 17, 1951. Tina preceded him in death in Oct. 1984. On Sept. 18, 1992, Vernon and long-time friend Pauline (Cheatley) were united in marriage. Vernon and Pauline moved to Belgrade where they resided until his death.
Vernon enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson while in California. Vernon also enjoyed hunting and fishing, and traveling throughout the country with Pauline. They especially enjoyed the beauty found throughout Montana.
Survivors include: loving wife, Pauline; son, Keith (Diane) Schulz of Valley Springs, Calif.; two daughters, Valerine (Mike) Bristow of Acampo, Calif. and Debre (David) Yuhas of Edmonds, Wash.; two step-daughters, Marlene (Bruce) Jones of Livingston and Louise (Dan) Warner of Sumner. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and two brothers.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday Aug. 3 at 2 p.m. at the Dokken-Nelson Sunset Chapel. Interment and graveside services will be Thursday, Aug. 5, at 11 a.m. in Lodi, Calif. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donors choice.

Deane A. Wilkinson
BROADVIEW - Deane A. Wilkinson, 69, of Broadview, passed away Saturday July 31, 1999, at St. Vincent Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer and steadfastly believed, "I've never had a bad day."
Deane was born March 23, 1930 in Chicago, the son of Arthur and Florence Hanson Wilkinson. He was raised on the family ranch and educated in Melstone. He moved to Eastend Sask, Canada in 1973 and started his excavation business, Speedy Dragline Service. In 1996 he moved back to Broadview. Deane then married his lifelong friend, Marry Haddock, in 1997. Deane was well loved on both sides of the border.
Survivors include his wife, Mary; son, Daniel (Jessica) Wilkinson and their children, Hunter Deane and Ariana Elisabeth; four children, Dale, Donita, Debbie and Dianna Wilkinson; two stepchildren, Bill (May) Heiser and Christy Haddock; and two sisters. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.
Memorial service will be 5 p.m. Monday at Broadview Evangelical Church with a reception following. Arrangements were made by Cremation or Funeral Gallery.

Albert J. Wilson
Albert J. Wilson, 87, of Billings died Saturday July 31, 1999, at Western Manor Health Care Center. He was born Sept. 27, 1911 in Lewistown, a son of Charles Edwin and Grace Annin Wilson. Albert attended school in Moore and worked on various ranches. He then became an auto mechanic and later was employed in welding and construction. He retired from Midland Materials in 1978.
Albert married Clara Helen Vavrovsky. They were united for 52 years when she died in 1987. Al loved fishing, hunting and collecting rocks.
Survivors include three sons, Robert L. (Judy) of Ballantine, Fred A. (Ann) of Billings, and Ralph E. of Beaverton, Ore.; a son-in-law, Michael Moats of Billings; 14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Tenny of Alaska; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife; one daughter, Maxine Moats in 1989; and his parents.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Cremation or Funeral Gallery, 8th Street West and St. John's Avenue. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements were made by Cremation or Funeral Gallery.

Edward H. 'Eddie' Blazina
Edward H. (Eddie) Blazina died July 30, 1999, at St. Vincent's Hospital. He was born Aug. 8, 1910, in Red Lodge. Eddie graduated from Carbon County High School where he was an outstanding athlete.
He worked for the Carbon County Creamery until 1963, when he moved to Great Falls and worked as a State Dairy and Egg Inspector until his retirement.
He had a passion for fishing and was known by many as "Stillwater Eddie." It was said, "If Eddie couldn't catch them, the fish weren't biting!"
His brother Ted, sister Grace, son Ronald and infant daughter preceded him in death. He is survived by his loving companion, Lucille Berkstrom; his sons, Ted (Shelley) and Tom (Carrie); six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999, at Cremation or Funeral Gallery at Eighth Street West and St. Johns Avenue in Billings.

Solomon Fink
LOVELL, Wyo. - Solomon Fink, 83, of Lovell, passed away on July 30, 1999, after a short, brave battle with cancer. He was born on Feb. 13, 1916, in Kane to John D. and Emilie Fink.
On Sept. 3, 1939, he married Mary Laber and together they had five children. Sol was a lifelong resident of Lovell and was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, serving as financial secretary for many years. He co-owned and operated the Highland Grocery and Locker Plant for 42 years, retiring in 1982.
Sol enjoyed bowling, fishing, pitching horseshoes, reading, jigsaw puzzles and yard work, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a very hard-working, loving, and generous husband, dad, and grandpa and he will be greatly missed.
Sol was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Brian. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary; five children; Doris (Joe) Rhoads of Farmington, Utah; Leroy (Joni) Fink of Lovell; Nancy (Roy) Oliver of Billings; Rodney Fink of Buffalo, and Tom (Anna) Fink of Lovell; eight grandchildren: Todd Rhoads, Debbie Citte, Sheri Tingey, Susie Wilkerson, Jennifer Simons, and Cole, Ely and Kiana Fink; two great-grandchildren: Natasha and Jordyn; seven brothers: John, Carl, Gottlieb, Daniel, Willie, Alfred, and Emil; two sisters, Marie Doerr and Bertha Gerriant.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 3, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Lovell. Burial will be in Lovell cemetery. Haskell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials can be made to the Lutheran Hour Ministries.

Rex Beach Kaufman
MALTA - Rex Beach Kaufman, 74, died Friday, July 31, 1999, at the Phillips County Hospital from a heart attack.
Memorial service will be at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3, at the Adams Memorial Chapel. Cremation has taken place.

Gladys Irene Maness
RANCHO BERNARDO, Calif. - Gladys Maness, formerly of Billings, Mont., died at Rancho Bernardo, July 29, 1999. She was the wife of Charles "Jack" Maness who preceded her in death in 1995.
Gladys was born Dec. 2, 1914, and was raised in Broadview and Red Lodge, Mont. Gladys, as a youth, stayed much of the time with her beloved late sister, Mae, and brother in-law, Robert Cornell Sr. of Billings.
Gladys and Jack owned and operated the Highway Cafe in Billings during the '40s. While Jack was on the police force, Gladys raised their two daughters, Marlene (Roger) Faulkner, currently of Seaside, Ore., and Joan (Bob) Land of Canoga Park. Gladys was an avid bridge player, belonged to the Square Dance Club and was a member of the Billings Elks Club. Gladys is the grandmother of seven, Colleen, Teri, Mike, Mark, Jeff, JoyLynn and Jill. She is the great-grandmother of 14 and has four great-great-grandchildren who will miss her pancakes, songs and candy dish as well as her example of poise and dignity.
A Memorial service was held at her home in Casa de las Companas on July 30.

Kenneth McDonald
SEATTLE - Kenneth George McDonald, 66, died of natural causes July 2, 1999, in Seattle. Services were held at Hoffner Fisher & Harvey Chapel and he is buried at Calvary cemetery in Seattle.
He was born April 29, 1933, in Bearcreek, Mont., to Robert and Nell McDonald. They moved to Red Lodge, Mont., where he spent his early life. He was in the final graduating class of Carbon County High School in 1951. Sonny left Red Lodge for his new hometown of Seattle to attend the University of Seattle and begin a career in education.
He made his home there for the next 48 years. He was the director of Vocational Education at Shoreline High School for many years until he retired in 1982. His favorite pastimes would include his Irish Setter show dogs, opera, gardening, gourmet cooking and traveling.
He is survived by his older brother, Robert McDonald; his wife, Marion, Circle, Mont.; his twin sister, Kathleen (Sister) Halpin, Billings; several nieces and nephews; and good friend, Dr. Roy Page and his wife, Patricia. He was preceded in death by his mother, 1988, and his father died in the Smith Mine disaster in 1943. Any remembrances can be sent to the charity of your choice. Remember Ken in your prayers and all the fond memories of him.

Rayno Nikula
Rayno Nikula, 79, of Billings passed away at his home early Saturday morning, July 31, 1999.
Rayno was born in a 1917 Allis Chalmers automobile on Brewery Hill near Red Lodge on July 7, 1920, the son of Otto and Mamie (Koski) Nikula. He received his education at the Fox School. While continuing to help his family on the farm, Rayno worked the mines near Butte and Nye, later transporting miners from Red Lodge to the Foster mine on a bus. He then began a career in mechanics that found him employed in Cody, Butte and Red Lodge.
On March 16, 1941, Rayno married Lula E. Lammi in Red Lodge. In 1953 they moved to Billings where he worked with Rowen Motors, later working for Empire Motors and other Billings garages until his retirement in 1974. Rayno loved cars, motorcycles and guns. Time spent with friends and family laughing and telling stories was always enjoyed.
Survivors include his wife, Lula of Billings; twin daughters, Rena Mill and husband LeRoy of Billings, and their children Linda and Luther; and Rita Walter and husband, Wayne of Billings and their children Joe, Jon and Jody; two sons, Randy Nikula of Billings, and Ron Nikula and wife, Marge of Fromberg, and their children Ron and Roxanne. Rayno is also survived by another grandson, Robert Nikula of Billings; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Leona Maki and her husband, Bill of Columbus. He was preceded in death by two sons, Rayno Jr. and Ross, a brother, Edwin, and his parents.
At Rayno's request, no public services are planned. Cremation has taken place and interment of the urn will be in the Red Lodge cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Big Sky Hospice, P.O. Box 35033, Billings, MT 59107. Smith Downtown Chapel of Billings is in charge of arrangements.

Viola J. Redfield
Viola J. Redfield, 94, of Billings, passed away Saturday afternoon, July 31, 1999, at Valley Health Care Center. She was born in Lansford, N.D., on Dec. 2, 1904, the daughter of Ralph and Bessie (Asp) Emans.
Viola was raised and educated in Lansford. She married Leonard Redfield, who preceded her in death. Viola worked for the Boeing Co. in Seattle for 17 years and retired to Montana in 1975 to be near her family. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons and one daughter.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4, at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist with interment in the Laurel cemetery.

Helen Y. Smith
Helen Y. Smith, 66, of Billings, passed away Thursday afternoon, July 29, 1999, at Evergreen Billings Care Center. The daughter of Glenn and Ellen (Hayward) McRae, she was born in McKenzie County, N.D., Jan. 7, 1933.
Survivors include her children, Robert A. Smith, Corby A. Smith, Jodi L. Smith, and Darin V. Smith all of Billings, Sheryl S. Elmore of Starkville, Miss., and Darcy Y. Smith of Denver; her brothers, Scott McRae of Miles City, Frank McRae of Utah, and Gordon Mckae of California; her sisters Donna Lewis of N.D., and Marylin Lingle of Billings; and five grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place and private family services are planned. Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist has charge of arrangements.

Esther Steele
Esther Ella Johnson Steele died July 29, 1999, at Deaconess Hospital. She was born Dec. 5, 1921, in Killdeer, N.D., to Edna Lauser and Frank Johnson. She attended school in Oakdale, N.D., and lived in the country until she moved to Billings with her family in 1937.
During World War II Esther worked in the shipyards in Vancouver, Wash., and was married to Arnold Winslow. They were divorced and Esther returned to Billings to work at Pierce Packing Company where she met Warren James Steele. They were married in 1946.
From 1968 to 1976 Esther and Warren owned and operated motels in North Bend and Aberdeen, Wash. They retired to Billings and were married almost 53 years.
Esther is survived by her husband, Warren; her son, Leonard Winslow and his wife, Patti of Seattle; her daughter, Loretta Watson of Dallas; her sisters, Alma Albu, Elizabeth Scheafer, and Lorene Huvaere, all of Billings; her brother, Lawrence of Vancouver, Wash.; six grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Marvin and Oscar Johnson.
Esther was an ardent reader and an excellent cook. Her family dinners are legend. She enjoyed a special rapport with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. To all her nieces and nephews she was "Aunt Essie."
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 2, 1999, at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Big Sky Hospice.

DeLores L. Tompkins
DeLores L. Tompkins, 79, of Billings, passed away Friday, July 30, 1999, at St. Vincent's Hospital. The daughter of Carl and Marie (Hoiseth) Ruud, she was born in Paynesville, Minn., April 9, 1920.
DeLores was raised and educated in Fargo, N.D., and graduated from high school in 1938. On Jan. 27, 1940, she married Ernie Tompkins in Moorhead, Minn. They moved to Billings in the fall of 1940.
DeLores loved to travel and especially enjoyed the winters spent in the Mesa, Arizona area. She enjoyed fishing and loved camping with her fellow telephone family campers. She was a member of the American Lutheran Church and the Daughters of the Nile. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.
Survivors include her husband, Ernie of Billings; her three children, Jim and his wife, Cheri of Helena, Larry and his wife, Carol of Billings, and Kay Courtney and her husband, Tom of Great Falls; her brother, Carlton Ruud and his wife, Mavis of Grand Rapids, Minn.; her sister, Pearl Olson and her husband, Walter of Sun Lakes, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Kym, Jon, Bryce, and Brett; and two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Samantha.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 2, at American Lutheran Church. Memorials may be directed to the American Lutheran Church, 5 Lewis Ave., Billings, MT 59101. Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist has charge of arrangements.

Deane A. Wilkinson
