Clara D. Overfelt
Clara D. Overfelt, age 95, of 2621 15th Avenue S. of Great Falls, Mont., died at a local hospital on September 27, 1999, of natural causes.
She was born August 17, 1904 near Moi, Norway, and immigrated to the United States with her parents, Oscar and Anna Drivdahl, in 1908, settling at Melville, Mont., where her parents were early day pioneers and settlers engaged in the raising of sheep. She married Leo Overfelt in 1922 and ranched in the Big Timber area until 1945, at which time they moved to Great Falls.
Clara was one of the founding members of the Montana Cowgirls Association, a former president and inducted into the National Cowgirls Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Center in Oklahoma City in 1992. She was a member of the First Methodist Church in Great Falls and enjoyed church activities, gardening, cooking, poetry, fishing and grandchildren. She loved animals.
Her husband Leo died in 1980.
Survivors include two sons, Dr. Marvin Overfelt and wife Charlene of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Clarence Overfelt and wife Allyce of Great Falls, a daughter-in-law Donna Mae Overfelt of Billings, a sister, Margaret Plaggemeyer of Big Timber; eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, attorney Lee Overfelt of Billings.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, September, 30, 1999 at the First Congregational Church, Big Timber, Montana with burial in the Big Timber cemetery. Croxford & Sons Funeral Home, 1307 Central Avenue, Great Falls, Montana 59401 is handling arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the donor's choice are preferred.

Eugene J. Sawyer
MALTA - Eugene J. "Gene" Sawyer, 77, died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, at the Phillips County Good Samaritan Center of natural causes.
Military funeral honors will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at the Adams Memorial Chapel with cremation to follow. Interment of the cremated remains will be at a later date.

Don Shannon
FAIRVIEW - Don Shannon was born on Jan. 11, 1926. His sister, Betty, raised him. Don quit school in the eighth grade to work on the family ranch while his dad worked for the WPA. During the next few years he broke horses for other ranchers for $5 per head. Sometimes he got paid.
As soon as he could, he joined the U.S. Navy and fought in World War II.
In 1952, he married Vida Dawley. Don said that they married because of his bank account. She pointed out she worked at the bank and he probably had an overdraft.
Don and Vi lived and worked in the Fairview area. He retired in 1988 and spent the last 11 years enjoying his grandchildren.
Following a long illness, Don was called to his just and merciful Father on Sept. 28, 1999. Before his death he said that he knew his dad, Ed, was waiting for him on the other side with a pair of good horses and they would soon be riding through tall grass together.
His wife, Vi; his son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Andrea Shannon and their daughters, Stephanie and Michelle Shannon of Butte, and his daughter, Kathleen Petrie and her children, Christopher, Lacie, and Aaron Davidsen and Mason Petrie of Billings, survive Don. His sister, Betty Sather and her husband, Henry; his brother, Dick Shannon and his wife, Penny; and his sister, Colleen Tyree also survive him. He is survived on Vi's side by his in-laws, Merle Lane (Willis, deceased), Floyd Dawley (Emily), and Marie Indergard (Jim, deceased). Don had many nieces and nephews. All were his fishing buddies.
Don's body will be cremated and the cremains will be scattered over his favorite places. A memorial service will be held on Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at the Community Presbyterian Church in Fairview at 10 a.m.

Ann D. Sherman
Ann D. Sherman, 93, of Billings, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, at Western Manor Nursing Home.
The daughter of John and Sophia Frankovic, Ann was born Nov. 16, 1999, at Belt. She attended school at Washoe and was raised in the Red Lodge and Bearcreek area.
She married A. Jalmer Saari, June 20, 1922. She married Dewey H. Sherman in Lewistown, June 11, 1936. Following their marriage they moved to Billings.
Ann had worked for Hart Albin's for 17 years. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and sewing. She was a member of St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral and had belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary for over 50 years.
Survivors include her daughter, Beverly Becker and her husband, Michael of Billings; three brothers, Charles Frankovic of Spokane, Andrew Frankovic of Harrisburg, Pa., and Rudolph Frankovic of Buffalo, Wyo.; six grandchildren, Andrea Workman of Shepherd, Michael S. Becker of Helena, Melissa Dye of Billings, Mark Becker of Billings, Kevin Becker of Albuquerque, N.M., and Karen Lloyd of Billings and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey in 1990, her parents, three sisters, and five brothers.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Mortuary with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Eunice Sonnamaker
SHERIDAN, Wyo. - Eunice Sonnamaker, 85, died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, at the Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.
Visitation will be 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, and Friday, Oct. 1, and until 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at Champion Funeral Home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with interment in the Sheridan Municipal cemetery.

Adeline Frances 'Lena' Trucano
BROADUS - Adeline Frances "Lena" Trucano, age 97, of Broadus, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, at the Powder River Manor in Broadus.
Lena was born on Jan. 17, 1902, in Meaderville (Butte), the daughter of Samuel and Leona (Capra) Visintainer. She grew up in the Bitterroot Valley of Western Montana near Victor. At the age of 15, she, her brother, two sisters, and her mother moved to the Boyes community in Eastern Montana after the death of her father. Lena went to live with a cousin in Lead, S.D., to go to high school.
James Trucano and Lena were married March 15, 1919, at old Boyes. They homesteaded three miles south of Boyes in 1916 and in 1937, they moved with their four daughters to the store and post office at Boyes. Mrs. Trucano became postmaster. She worked in the post office until Jan. 22, 1971, when they retired and moved out to the Rogge Ranch near Broadus.
In 1988, James passed away and in 1995 Lena moved into Broadus to the Powder River Manor. Lena was an excellent Italian cook and taught her skills to her children and grandchildren.
Lena was a very loving and affectionate person especially after her stroke. She loved kissing her grandchildren and anyone else who would help her. This was her only way of showing affection.
Lena is survived by four daughters: Linda Rogge and her husband, Joy of Broadus; Maxine McCurdy of Billings; Mildred Sowers of Belle Fourche, S.D.; and Kathleen Latta and her husband, John of Billings; 16 grandchildren: Diana McCurdy Edwards, Jani McCurdy Morse, David McCurdy, Matt McCurdy, Barbara Latta Benish, Cecille Latta Frank, Mark Latta, James Latta, Jill Sowers Legner, Clark Sowers, Jody Rogge O'Leary, LeAnne Rogge Viall, Lyle Rogge, Don Rogge, Bruce Rogge, and Brent Rogge; 39 great-grandchildren: Jessica, Cherise, Heather, Thomas, Jamie, Randy, Katie, Jody, Maggie, Hayley, Karl, Clare, Seth, Matthew, Trever, Mary, Steve, Darren, Greg, Robin, Lisa, Brian, Jamie, Jana, Amanda, Joe, Michael, Ryan, Kyle, Caitlin, Megan, Lena Kay, Molly, Sam, Hailey, Morgan, Hannah, Ethan, and Mackenzie; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James; four sisters: two at infancy, Tena Trucano and Anna Burton Smith; a brother, Tony; two sons-in-law, Neal McCurdy and Bill Sowers; one grandson, Charles Sowers; and one great-grandson, Michael Sowers.
A Vigil service will be held Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at 6 p.m. in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Broadus. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at 10:30 a.m. in the St. David's Catholic Church in Broadus with Father Chester Poppa officiating. Rite of Committal will follow in the family lot in the Valley View cemetery. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Broadus is in charge of the arrangements.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to St. David's Catholic Church or to the Powder River Manor or charity of their choice.

Dallas Ullman
FAIRVIEW - Funeral services for Dallas Ullman, 86, of Fairview, will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at the Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Kent Stenzel officiating. Interment will be in the Richland Memorial Park, Sidney, under the direction of Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney.
Dallas went to be with the Lord on Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, at the Sidney Health Center, Sidney.
Dallas was born on the family farm, Fairview, on May 24, 1913, to parents, Robert and Sadie (Rohlinger) Ullman, the same farm he has resided at for many years. Dallas attended the Ike Thomas school until the family moved to Glendive, where he attended schools and graduated from high school. He returned to Fairview to farm the family farm, west of Fairview, with his brother, Robert.
When Dallas was a young man, he played in a dance band, called "Al and His Buddies." Dallas was united in marriage to Evelyn Espeland, June 1, 1942, in Sidney. Later he purchased the family farm. Dallas was engaged in farming and ranching for many years, until he retired in the mid-1980s. They continued to live on the farm until July 1, 1999, when he entered Home Sweet Home and two months later became a resident of the Sidney Health Center-Extended Care Facility, where he resided since.
Dallas was a very loving, caring, generous family man and had a strong faith in God. He really enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved reading and keeping track of local sports. Dallas especially loved farming, and was a good steward of the land. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Fairview, served in many church offices, and the Sons of Norway in Sidney.
Dallas is survived by his wife, Evelyn Ullman of Fairview; two sons, Ronald Ullman and wife Audrey of Sidney, Duane Ullman and wife, Diane of Fairview; a daughter, Karen Tabbert and husband, Ken of Helena; a brother, Wallace Ullman and wife, Bea of Chula Vista, Calif.; a sister, Lorraine Blank of Billings; eight grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert; and sister, Juneta Hampton.

Joseph 'Joe' Wagner
Joe Wagner, 71, of Billings, passed away peacefully in his sleep, at home on Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, after a long battle with heart disease. He was born in Billings on Jan. 22, 1928, the only son of Joseph and Mayme Wagner.
He graduated from Billings Senior High School in 1945. In 1949, he met the love of his life Mary Jayne Pryde and they were married in Billings on Sept. 4, 1950. Not long after their marriage, Joe was drafted and served in the U.S. Army from 1950-1952. After returning, Joe attended Billings Business College and began his career in the farm implement industry working for International Harvester Co. and Parker-Montana Co. In 1975, he began Great Plains Marketing and was currently employed by Countryside Marketing.
He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He loved music, dancing and traveling. He grew up playing in his parents' band and later formed his own band, The Skylarks. He was a member of the American Legion and the Elks Club where he and his wife, Mary Jayne enjoyed dancing. Joe's love of travel took him and his wife around the world. He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Billings. He was a kind, generous man and loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Jayne; his four children: Mary Jo (Dodie) Wagner of Billings, Susan Wagner of Denver, Robert Wagner of Denver, Richard (Trish) Wagner of Anaconda.; his sister-in-law, Helen Pryde of Red Lodge; five grandchildren: Gregory Kehm, Laura Knipp of Billings, Lucas, Rachel and Jackson Wagner, all of Anaconda; and one great-grandson, Matthew Ballew.
Cremation has taken place and funeral mass will be held at St. Pius X Catholic Church on Thursday, Sept. 30, at 10:30 a.m. Graveside service will be at Holy Cross cemetery immediately following.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 2812 First Ave. N., Billings, MT 59101.

James Antony Bart
MILES CITY - James Antony "Jim" Bart, 29, died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, as a result of a car accident.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home with interment in the family lot in the Custer County cemetery.

Merlin 'Bud' Berwick
BAINVILLE - Funeral services for Merlin "Bud" Berwick, 73, of Bainville, will be Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, at 11 a.m. MDT at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Culbertson. Rev. Al Beyer will officiate and burial will be in the Bainville cemetery.
Merlin "Bud" Berwick was born Oct. 8, 1925, in Nelson County, N.D., to Selma and Monger Berwick. Bud passed away Sept. 26, 1999, at his home in Bainville.
He was preceded in death by his father, Monger; his daughter, Beverly; and his granddaughter, Kayla.
He is survived by his wife, Florence; his mother, Selma; brothers, Vernon and his wife, Hazel of Coupeville, Wash., Dean and his wife, Sharon of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Dale and his wife, Pearl of Bainville; sisters, Lois Kuester and her husband, John of Williston, N.D., and Carole Beard of Williston. He is also survived by three daughters, Marsha Crusch Picard of Bainville, Susan Davidson of Shepherd, and Tina Denowh of Rapid City, S.D.; three sons, Mark of Moorhead, Minn., Mathew of Culbertson, and Martin of Bainville; as well as 21 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Bud lived at McVille, N.D., until he moved with his parents to Bainville, where he graduated from high school in 1943, and then entered the Army. He served in the South Pacific and was stationed in Korea. After his discharge in 1947, he attended college at the University of Montana in Missoula.
He married Florence Vandeberg on June 3, 1950, and began farming. His love of farming was a life-long venue.
After a long career, Bud retired from the Postal Service in 1985, but continued delivering the rural mail in Bainville with his wife until April, 1999.
Bud enjoyed canning, his cookbook collection, and preparing and eating gourmet cuisine. He loved the outdoors and his family.
Friends may call at Fulkerson Funeral Home in Williston on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. and one hour before services at the church on Thursday.

Kenneth C. Boles
Kenneth C. Boles, 77, of Billings, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999, at St. Vincent Hospital.
The son of Alvie and Bernice Howard Boles, Ken was born July 26, 1922, on the family ranch in Eden. When he was 12, his mother passed away and the family moved to Black Eagle. When he was 16, his father passed away and he lived with aunts and uncles. He graduated from high school in Great Falls in 1942.
Ken had worked for the Milwaukee Railroad and as time keeper during the construction of Fort Peck Dam and Malmstrom Air Force Base before working for Chicago Northwestern Railroad. In 1959 he transferred to Billings and retired in 1985 as a district sales rep after 32 years of service.
He married Barbara Pyatt in Great Falls, March 26, 1949.
Ken loved to golf. He also enjoyed playing guitar, hunting, fishing and travel. He had been a member of Hope Evangelical Church, Pryor Creek Golf Club, and Scottish Rite.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara; two daughters, Pamela Ann Boles of Powell, Wyo., and Cynthia Rae Boles of Butte; a brother, Jack of Helena; a sister, Ina Mae Corby of Sun River; two grandchildren, Jessica Rae Spears and Michael Womeldorf, both of Billings; and cousins in the Great Falls area and Browning.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Hope Evangelical Church, 5554 Grand Ave.
Memorials may be made to Hope Evangelical Church.
Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist has charge of arrangements.

Walter 'Bud' Brewer Jr.
OXFORD, Miss. - Walter "Bud" Brewer Jr., age 88, of Oxford, formerly of Powderville, Mont., passed away Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999, at his home in Mississippi after a long and difficult illness.
Walter was born on April 19, 1911, in Toledo, Ill., the son of Walter and Margaret (Lansen) Brewer. He attended grade school in Toledo and graduated from high school in Paris, Ill. Walter completed his undergraduate schooling at Northwestern and graduated from Northwestern University Law School. During those years, he coached college wrestling.
Walter started his law practice in Danville, Ill., and became state's attorney in Cumberland County, Ill., prior to entering the Navy where he served in the Pacific until his honorable discharge. He practiced law in Illinois during that time. He also purchased his first ranch in Sheridan, Wyo., and later purchased another at Powderville.
He married Mary Beth Harrison and to this union, four children were born: Margaret Mary Schwab of Scottsbluff, Neb.; Miriam Elizabeth Brewer of Sheridan; Walter Thomas and Harrison Lee Brewer, both of Miles City, Mont. He later married Mollie Rhea in 1970. He is also survived by three stepchildren: Beth Barnett of Kalispell, Mont.; Jessica Richardson of Newark, N.J.; and Adam Richardson of Roseville, Minn.; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Bud continued to operate the ranch until 1991 when they retired and made their home in Oxford. Walter loved ranching, hunting, reading and politics.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at 2 p.m. at the family home near Oxford. Interment will be held at a later date on the family ranch. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Miles City is in charge of the arrangements.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Miles City Public Library and sent in care of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home, 1717 Main, Miles City, MT 59301.
