Arthur 'Art' Elven West
Arthur "Art" Elven West passed away peacefully at his home on Sept. 19, 1999. He was born Nov. 10, 1922, in Iowa City, Iowa, to Fred and Alice West. He was the second of eight children. As a child, his family moved to Cheyenne, Wyo., where he was raised and educated.
Art joined the Navy in 1939 at the age of 17. He was injured in the bombing of Pearl Harbor. On Oct. 6, 1948, he married Ruby Pennock. Art worked as an ironworker in Utah, Wyoming and Montana until being injured at Malmstrom Air Force Base.
Art loved to work with his hands. He built houses, remodeled and always enjoyed making special wood projects as well as other hand-made gifts for his family. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, and going to church camp.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ruby; his two sisters, Lois (John) Serrano, and Donna Sabin; his children, Patty Brown, Judy Frank (Terry Gaybert), Leonard (Barbara) West, Cheryl (Dave) Eyster, Carol (Perry) Rees, Dave (Robin) West and Jackie (George) Hayashi; 17 grandchildren; and 22 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers (Raymond and Kenny) and three sisters (Dorothy, Ruth and Sharon), and a daughter, Linda Kay.
Art will always hold a special place in the hearts of those that knew him and will be greatly missed by all the people whose lives he touched.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, at the Chapel of Hope in Lockwood.
We would like to express our appreciation for the special care that he received from Dr. Fran Argani, and the staff of Big Sky Hospice, especially to Joyce, Beth and Lindy.
Memorials may be made to Big Sky Hospice, Chapel of Hope Assembly, or charity of choice.

Samuel Arthur Westika
RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Samuel Arthur Westika, 56, formerly of Busby, Mont., and Sheridan, Wyo., died Sept. 5, 1999, at his home of heart disease.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, at the Busby Mennonite Church with interment in the Wilson Family cemetery at the TallBull residence in Kirby, Mont. Champion Funeral Home of Sheridan is in charge.

Ethel M. Carlstrom
LEWISTOWN - Ethel M. Carlstrom, 66, Lewistown, died Sunday afternoon in Billings of cancer. She was born Oct. 9, 1932, in Stanford, the daughter of Lawrence and Bertie Carlstrom. She received her schooling in Fairfield and Denton, graduating in 1952. She moved to Kansas City and worked for a couple of years. She returned to Lewistown and on Feb. 21, 1954, she was united in marriage to Emmet B. Bolstad in Winifred. They lived in Winifred and raised their children. The marriage was later dissolved, and she moved to Lewistown in 1979. In 1982 she moved to Bangor, Wash., for one year and then to Germany, where she worked for the U.S. Army. In 1989 she moved to California where she lived until moving back to Lewistown in 1990.
Her son, Ray; her parents; one sister, Lorraine Peterson; and three brothers: John, Lawrence Jr. and Bill, preceded her in death.
She is survived by her daughter, Donna Bolstad of Billings; two sisters, Ann Radcliffe and her husband, Jim of Bozeman, and Cathy Todd and her husband, Dick of Lewistown; two brothers, Bert and his wife, Ruth, and Jim and his wife, Lana Carlstrom, both of Fort Benton; several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services for Ethel M. Carlstrom will be Friday at 11 a.m. in the American Lutheran Church in Winifred. Cremation has taken place. The Cloyd Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Friends may make memorials to the Ethel M. Carlstrom Memorial Scholarship Fund, or the Winifred American Lutheran Church, and they may be left at the Cloyd Funeral Home.

Harold Eugene Clark
SHEPHERD - Harold Eugene Clark, 79 of Shepherd, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, at Eagle Cliff Manor.
The son of Dexter and Myrtle Clark, he was born Sept. 12, 1920, in Lucasville, Ohio. The oldest of 12 children, he was raised and educated in Lucasville as part of a farming family. He came to Huntley in 1938 to work at the CCC camp. After serving in the Air Force during WWII, he returned to Montana and ranched at Roscoe until moving to Shepherd in 1964 where he raised cattle and worked construction. He had worked for Barry O'Leary, Midland, and JTL, retiring at age 78 due to poor health.
Harold was a member of AFL-CIO and the Cement Masons. He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, having joined the church in 1969.
He married Carol Iverson, Dec. 13, 1973, in the Idaho Falls Temple.
Survivors include his wife, Carol of Shepherd; five children, Mary of Billings, Jim of Shepherd, Nancy and Rachael of Bozeman and Keith Clark of Roscoe; two stepsons, Steve Walker of Las Vegas, and Scott Walker of Billings; three grandchildren, Rusty Clark of Roscoe, Jantzen Walker of Park City, and Michael Walker of Billings; and 10 brothers and sisters, Charles R., Herman E., Lois J. Kochert, Charles H., Donald E., Helen L. Flynn, Florabelle Weigler, Grover D., George R., all of Waverly, Ohio, and Russell S. of Redland, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his son, Melvin; stepson, John Walker; and his brother, Carl.
The family would like to extend their thanks to the 8th Ward Relief Society, the Bishopric and members, and friends in the Shepherd community. A very special thanks to Big Sky Hospice for their compassionate and competent care of Harold.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Billings East Stake Center, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1640 Broadmoor Drive, just off Wicks Lane. Visitation with the family will begin at 10 a.m. in the Relief Society Room. Private interment will be held at Yellowstone Valley Memorial Park. Simplicity Burial and Cremation Services has charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to Big Sky Hospice.

Jess Harold 'Dan' Daniels
CODY, Wyo. - Jess Harold "Dan" Daniels, 67, died Sept. 12, 1999, at his home after a long illness.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, at the Cody United Methodist Church. Ballard Funeral Home is in charge.

Stephen Lee Dyke
LIVINGSTON - Stephen Lee Dyke, 42, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, at his home after a long illness.
Cremation has taken place and family memorial services will be at a later date. Franzen-Davis Crematory was in charge.

Anna Gertrud Ecker
HOBSON - Anna Gertrud Ecker, 79, of Hobson, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, at the Central Montana Medical Center in Lewistown of natural causes.
Cremation has taken place. Graveside memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, in the Philbrook cemetery. Creel Funeral Home of Lewistown is in charge.

Helen Fagan
COLUMBUS - Helen Fagan, 90, passed away on Sept. 19, 1999, at the Beartooth Manor in Columbus.
Helen was born on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 1908, in Oldenburg, Germany, to Gerhardt and Helena Woltermann. The pioneer family migrated with son, Heinie and Helen in 1909 to the USA through Ellis Island and homesteaded north of Columbus.
Helen attended rural schools and graduated from Columbus High School. She married Daniel Fagan in 1931; he died in 1972. She worked for the old Anaconda Co. in Columbus for some years during the operation of the Chrome Mine for the WWII effort. She later worked in the assessor's office at the county courthouse and was later self-employed, owning the Valley Vista Trailer Court for several years.
She was a member of the Columbus Senior Citizens. She loved being with people, dancing and traveling to see friends and relatives until health matters confined her to her home.
She was fortunate to have the special love and care of her loving sister, Ella, and her family the past several years, along with the care of Sharelle Jelly and the entire staff of the Beartooth Manor.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Agnes; brothers, Git, Fred, Heinie, Herman; and two infant siblings in Germany.
Helen is survived by sons, Jerry (Telma) Fagan of Mesa, Ariz., John (Marian) of Butte; brothers, Bennie (Mary) Woltermann, Art (Margaret) Woltermann; sister, Ella (Phil) Holten, all of Columbus; grandchildren, Jeff Fagan of Boring, Ore., Jay Fagan of Portland, Ore., Kenny Fagan of Tempe, Ariz., Steven Fagan of Seattle, Wash., Michael Fagan of Pensacola, Fla.; six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her good friend, Paul Reid of Columbus.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999, at Smith Funeral Chapel in Columbus. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Robert J. Field
Robert J. Field died Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, of complications from cancer. He was with his family at the time of his death.
Robert was born Nov. 29, 1938, in Melstone, the son of Abbie and Robert J. Field Sr. He attended school in Roundup and graduated from Roundup High School.
He is survived by his wife, Kathrine; three sons, Frank and wife, Shannon of Tucson, Ariz., Chris of Billings, and Scott and wife, Kendra and granddaughter, Mekiah. Robert's brother, Bill and wife, Gloria, are also of Billings. He is preceded in death by his mother and father and stepfather, Aaron Holliday.
During the early years of his marriage to Kathrine, Bob trained in Minneapolis at Brown's Institute and became a licensed radio announcer. He first worked as an announcer in Kalispell at KGEZ Radio. Following that, he and Kathrine moved to Billings where Bob worked for a time for KGHL Radio.
The majority of Robert's professional career was spent working in the title industry. He first worked for the Abstract Guaranty Co., which later became known as Safeco Title. At the time of his death he was working for First Montana Title Co. Robert was well known throughout the state in the title community. He served for many years in the capacity of secretary/treasurer and later as the president of the Montana Land Title Association. At the time his sons were active in little league baseball, Robert took a very active part in various capacities of the Rocky Mountain Little League.
He took his greatest pride and joy in his three sons and in being home with the family.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, 1999, at Smith West Chapel, 304 34th St. W. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Big Sky Hospice.

Alton B. 'Tony' Gunn
HUNTLEY - Alton B. "Tony" Gunn, our devoted father, husband, and faithful friend to all, went to be with his Lord on Sept. 18, 1999. He was born July 20, 1919, in Eagle Bend, Minn., the son of Walter and Mildred (Canon) Gunn.
Following graduation from high school, Tony started working on the family dairy farm. He then moved to California and began working for Douglas Aircraft. In 1944, he enlisted in the Army Aircorp and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands as a tail gunner with an air sea rescue unit. Following the war, Dad moved to Denver, Colo., and began his long career as a plumber. Tony later started his own successful plumbing business, which is listed in the Denver Growth Book as one of Denver's largest plumbing companies, and was instrumental in writing the Denver Plumbing Code. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman.
On June 12, 1964, Tony took Mary L. LaRoque Triplett as his wife in Golden, Colo. With this union the family bounded to 10, which included, Mona, Will, Ricky, Nita, Vicki, Clyde, Tony, James, Alex, and Zilda, and soon after, Ronald and Canon. In 1972, Dad and Mom and the younger kids moved to Polson, and later to Ronan to try their hand at ranching. In January of 1980, Tony went back to plumbing, returning to Colorado to start Chief Plumbing and Heating with his two sons, James and Clyde. Due to ill health, the family relocated to Billings in 1983. As the kids grew up, the list of grandchildren grew to 26 and the list of great-grandchildren to 6.
Survivors include his wife, Mary, and all of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; his brother, Loren; his sisters, Nelma, Viola, and Lois; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Ronald, and one great-grandchild.
Dad will be remembered by us as a loving, caring man, always treating everyone fairly, his wide smile, a quick joke, and bright blue eyes, with a twinkle that did not dwindle. We will miss you deeply, Dad, and will remember you always.
Visitation will begin 5 p.m. Wednesday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist, 1001 Alderson Ave. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist. Interment with military honors will follow in Mountview cemetery.

T. Carl Johnson
T. Carl Johnson, 82, of Billings, was born March 28, 1917, in Loma and passed away peacefully Sept. 20, 1999, after a prolonged illness.
He graduated from Dakota Wesleyan University with a degree in economics and then joined the United States Navy in 1942. He served in both the Pacific and European Theaters during WWII earning the rank of lieutenant.
In 1945 he married Elizabeth O'Connor in Oakland, Calif.
Alter receiving a master's degree in school administration at the University of Montana, T. Carl spent over 20 fine years as a math teacher and school administrator in the Montana Public Schools, 13 of these years as superintendent of the Huntley Project Schools.
T. Carl served as a board member of the Montana High School Assn. from 1966-1970 and as president from 1971 to 1972. He was a member of the Huntley Project Lions Club and a member of both the Montana Education Amen and the National Education Assn.
T. Carl was an avid sports fan and supporter of high school sports.
He was preceded in death by his 27-year-old son, Norman in 1984, his father and mother and a sister.
Survivors include his children: Sister Mary Pat Johnson of Kansas City, Mo., Gerry Oblander of Clayton, Calif., Jon (Karen) Johnson of Bozeman and Carla (Kerry) Garner of Billings; seven grandchildren, Sarah, Tucker and Janie Johnson, Peter, Jon and Jennie Oblander, and Conor Johnson; his brother, Norman Johnson of Billings.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept 23, at Smith West Chapel. Cremation has taken place. Memorials may be made to Big Sky Hospice, P.O. Box 35033, Billings, MT 59107 or the charity of your choice.

Rose T. Kienenberger
DODSON - Rose T. Kienenberger, 84, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, at the County Home in Malta of natural causes.
Rosary will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dodson. Wake service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, at the Dodson High School Gymnasium with interment in the Hillside cemetery. Adams Funeral Home of Malta is in charge.

Hugh John 'Jack' Marron
Hugh John "Jack" Marron, 71, of Billings, passed away after a short illness at Valley Health Care Center on Sept. 19, 1999.
He was born Aug. 28, 1928, in Wolf Point, a son of Hugh Nicholas and Rose Cecilia Pogreba Marron and received his education there, graduating in 1946. He later attended University of Montana and Gonzaga in Washington.
He married Donna Mae Bischke on Oct. 8, 1947, and together they had seven children. Jack had worked for the Great Northern Railway and later for the Hughes Tool Co. in Montana. He has been better known for his years in auto sales at Ryan Olds and as a tax preparer, "a loophole man." Jack loved to be Santa Claus in the malls, nursing homes and had taught many people the do's and don'ts of being Santa.
Jack and Billie Slagle were married May 15, 1982, in Billings.
Survivors include his wife, Billie; three daughters, Dr. Pamela Ann Marron of Boston, Cynthia Lee (David) Joyner of Texas, Jill Cecilia Marron of Billings; four sons, Timothy John, John Patrick, Hugh Nicholas and Peter Anthony, all of Billings; two sisters, Rosemary Kelly of Billings and Cathleen Kelly of Concrete, Wash.; two stepchildren, Bret Slagle of Billings and Laura (Mike) Everett of Helena; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He has been preceded in death by his parents.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial Mass will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral. Memorials to Hospice or Shrine Children's Hospital Transportation Fund.
Arrangements were by Cremation or Funeral Gallery.

Jose 'Joe' Albert Martinez Jr.
WOLF POINT - Joe Martinez Jr., 37, died on Sept. 1, 1999, near Wolf Point from drowning in the Missouri River.
Joe was born on July 15, 1962, at St. Anthony, Idaho, the son of Jose A. and Elvina (Reum) Martinez Sr. He grew up and attended schools through the eighth grade in St. Anthony and in 1975 they moved to Wolf Point where he has lived ever since. He was a wrestler, an honor student, member of the National Honor Society, member of FFA, graduating from Wolf Point High School in 1980. After graduation he worked with Motor Coach Industries Inc. and International Pay Star until 1982. He then attended the mechanical training at Billings Vocational Technical Center. From 1983-1988, he worked for A & S Tribal Industries. From 1989 to 1994, Joe worked for seismograph companies, including Frontier, Lockhart, PGI, Century, Northern, and Capilano.
On April 24, 1993, he married Rynette Darlene Melbourne. Joe worked for the Ost Oil Field Service. He had been working as a truck driver and a mechanic at the time of his death.
On April 24, 1995, his son Jose "Joey" Albert Martinez III was born.
Joe was a bowler on Friday Nights Mixed Couples and VFW volunteer. He enjoyed camping, fishing, helping other people, and doing mechanical work. He was preceded in death by his father.
Survivors include his wife and son, both of Wolf Point; his mother, Elvina and stepfather, Kenneth Warrior of Wolf Point; paternal grandmother, Eliza Martinez of Berkeley, Calif.; mother-in-law, Nurna Azure of Wolf Point; brothers and sisters, Tony (Leann) Martinez of Circle, Angela (Joe) Thompson of Delville, Ala., Sandra (Jeff) Howell of Billings, and Chris (Stacy) Martinez of Wolf Point; sisters-in-law, Leigh Melbourne, Sonia Martell and Kelly Azure, all of Wolf Point; brother-in-law, Emerson Melbourne of Wolf Point; an aunt, Patsy Martinez of Berkeley; and numerous aunts and uncles.
Visitations will be held from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 22, at the Clayton Memorial Chapel in Wolf Point with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 23, at the Clayton Memorial Chapel with Pastor Ron Moccasin officiating. Interment will be in the Chicken Hill cemetery near Wolf Point.

Clarice C. 'Gretch' Mayor
KAYCEE, Wyo. - Clarice Christy Mayor, 85, of Kaycee, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, at the Amie Holt Care Center in Buffalo.
Visitation will be 1-10 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, and 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, at the Adams Funeral Home in Buffalo. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with interment in Willow Grove cemetery.

Carl Percy Mortenson
RANCHESTER, Wyo. - Carl Percy Mortenson, 82, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, at Sheridan Manor.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, at Kane Funeral Home.

George Spencer Sanders
RONAN - George Spencer Sanders, 88, formerly of Hardin and Billings, died Sept. 11, 1999, at St. Luke Extended Care Facility of natural causes.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, at the United Methodist Church. Shrider's Mortuary is in charge.

Preston E. Smeltzer
LEWISTOWN - Preston E. Smeltzer, 84, died Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, at his home of natural causes.
Vigil services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, in the Cloyd Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, at St. Leo's Catholic Church with interment in Calvary cemetery.

Donald L. Snyder
CODY, Wyo. - Donald L. Snyder, 88, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, at his home.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, at the Cody United Methodist Church. Ballard Funeral Home is in charge.
