Stewart P. Miller
'Stookey'
SALMON, Idaho - Stewart P. Miller, "Stookey, " passed away Sept. 17 at the Discovery Care Center in Salmon.
He was born Sept. 3, 1918, in New Mahoning, Pa., to William and Ella Miller. While in grade school, he worked as a water boy for a road construction crew. In order to pay his high school tuition and transportation, he worked at a dairy. He graduated from Lehighton High School in 1937.

Stew married Doris Crilley in Allentown, Pa., on Feb. 23, 1938. During the next five years, he worked with his father and brother as a painter and paper hanger, and as a bomb spray painter for Bethlehem Steel.

In June of 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, taking boat training at Samson, N.Y. He was assigned to the attack transport, U.S.S. Monrovia, which made six invasions and transported the first occupational troops to Japan. After his discharge on Jan. 9, 1946, he moved his family to Billings, Mont., to work on a dairy farm. In 1947, they moved to Bozeman, Mont., where he enrolled at Montana State University and worked as assistant dairy herdsman, graduating with a B.S. degree in agriculture and a minor in dairy production in 1951. After graduation, the family moved to Miles City, Mont., where he worked as the farm manager and taught general agriculture at the State Industrial School for delinquent boys. In 1956 he took a job with Montana Flour Mills in Missoula. In August 1969 they moved to Harrison, Mont., where they owned and operated the Harrison Grain Elevator, retiring in 1983.

His parents, his wife, Doris, and three brothers preceded him in death.

Survivors include his companion, Ada Drollinger; four daughters and sons-in-law, Joan and Hugh Elmore of Missoula, Fran and Jim Snyder of Laurel, Mont., Sheila and Dick Moore of Medford, Ore., and Alice and Crockett Nash of Cherry Creek, Mont.; one son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Penny Miller of Billings; one sister and brother-in-law, Marion and Wayne Smith of New Mahoning; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Sept. 23, at the K & L Funeral Home in Harrison. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday with interment to follow at the Harrison cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Shriner's Children's Hospital, 911 W. Fifth, Spokane, Wash., or the charity of your choice.

Ida Herness
GILLETTE, Wyo. - Ida Herness, formerly of Sidney, Mont., died Friday, Sept. 17, 1999, in Gillette.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20, at the Fulkerson Memorial Chapel in Sidney with interment in the Sidney cemetery.

Alfred 'Al' Lane
SIDNEY - Alfred "Al" Lane, 82, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, at his home.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20, at the Lonsdale United Methodist Church. Fulkerson Funeral Home is in charge.

Frank 'Toots' Dunn
SIDNEY - Frank "Toots" Dunn, 66, died Friday, Sept. 17, 1999, in the Sidney Health Center Emergency Room.
Wake services will be at 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 19, at the Fulkerson Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 20, at St. Matthew's Catholic Church with interment in the Sidney cemetery.

Donald Hinman
SIDNEY - Donald Hinman, 72, died Friday, Sept. 17, 1999, at the Sidney Health Center Extended Care Facility.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, at the Bible Baptist Church with interment in the Sidney cemetery. Fulkerson Funeral Home is in charge.

Matthew Jonathan Lepel
CULBERTSON - Matthew Jonathan Lepel, 3-month-old son of Bert and Mavirda Lepel, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, at the family home in Culbertson.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, at the Bible Baptist Church in Sidney with interment in the Klempel Family cemetery in Lambert. Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney is in charge.

Samuel T. 'Sam' De Shazo Jr.
BAYTOWN, Texas - Samuel T. "Sam" De Shazo Jr., 75, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 15, in a local hospice center.
Sam was born June 5, 1924, in Washington, D.C. He had lived in Baytown since 1951 and worked as a quality control supervisor with J.M. Huber Co.

He was a member of Cedar Bayou Baptist Church, a former member of the Baytown Evening Optimists Club and was very active with Sterling High School activities. He served as a staff sergeant in the Army Air Corp during WWII.

Survivors include his wife, Frances of Baytown; a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Karyn De Shazo of Baytown; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Stephen Hollingshead of Laurel, Mont.; a daughter, Ava Huron of Baytown; and grandchildren, Grady Doyle and Ax Huron, Josh and Rachel Hollingshead and Shanna and Drew De Shazo.

He was preceded in death by his son, Sammy De Shazo, as well as a grandson, Stephen Hollingshead and his son-in-law, Grady Huron.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Navarre Chapel in Baytown with the Rev. Bob Elliott officiating, assisted by the Rev. D.C. Mangum. Honorary pallbearers will be all present and past employees of J.M. Huber Co., also his many friends and the morning "breakfast group" at Texas Steak House.

John Alexander Adams
MELVILLE - John Alexander Adams passed away quietly and peacefully Thursday afternoon, Sept. 16, 1999, at the family ranch.
He was born on May 3, 1917, in Billings, to Edgar M. and Beth Covert Adams. He moved to Portland, Ore., with his family where he attended grade and high school and graduated from Oregon State University with a degree in civil engineering. He belonged to the Phi Delta Theta fraternity, and was elected to Tau Beta Pi, and engineering honorary.

He enlisted in the Navy as an aviation cadet in March 1941. In January 1942 he received his wings as a naval aviator with a commission as ensign and served as a flight instructor at the NAS in Corpus Christi, Texas, until October 1943. His squadron was ordered to the Aleutian chain at Attu and flew patrol for nine months. He received an Honorable Discharge in October 1945.

He was married to Alice Johnson of Portland on March 14, 1943. The couple moved to the ranch on Tony Creek in September 1946 with their two small children. He lived the rest of his life as a dedicated stockgrower and a committed member of the community.

For some years he was a member of the Big Timber Lutheran Church and then transferred his membership to Melville Lutheran. He was a member of Sweet Grass County Farm Bureau, Montana Stockgrowers and the American Legion Post 19.

He is survived by his wife, Alice, and four children: son, Alex Adams and companion, Marky of New Jersey; daughter, Nina Christensen and husband, Bill of Seattle; son, Richard Adams and partner, Ross Kyllo of Minneapolis; daughter, Emily and husband, Ben Meek of Battle Ground, Wash.; two granddaughters, Jocelyn Christensen of Northfield, Minn., and Madeline Hutton of Battle Ground; a sister, Sue Pierson of Portland; and two cousins, Libby McCormack of Bellingham, Wash., and Emily Roscoe of Billings, whom he regarded as his sisters; also two special kids down the creek, Laurie and Dave Gano. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Edgar M. Jr.

Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20, at the Melville Lutheran Church. Memorials may be given to the Melville Lutheran Church or a charity of one's choice. Lowry Funeral Home arranged the services.

Pius A. Gross
MILES CITY - Pius A. Gross, 71, of Miles City, passed away Wednesday evening, Sept. 15, 1999, in the Veterans Administration Health Center.
He was born July 12, 1928, in Strasburg, N.D., a son of David and Magdelena Stephen Gross. He received his education in a country school near Bismarck, N.D., and Pompeys Pillar. He later attended several vo-tech schools where he studied auto mechanics.

Pius enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1946 and served 10 years before receiving his Honorable Discharge. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Betty.

He has lived and worked in the Miles City area as an auto mechanic for most of his life. He was a member of the Catholic Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Jeanie Gross of Louisiana and Magdelena Gross of Miles City; two sons, Chuck Gross of Polson and Richard Gross of Montana; five sisters, Kate Vetch of Miles City, Regina Goetz of Washington, Helen Holzworth of Arizona, Margaret Johnson of North Carolina and Bridgid Setting of Billings. He is also survived by several grandchildren.

Vigil services will be held 7 p.m. Sunday in the Bullis-Graves Memorial Chapel. Rite of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Rite of Committal with military honors will follow in the Veterans Section of the Custer County cemetery. Bullis-Graves Memorial Chapel of Miles City has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Mildred Miriam Langager Erickstein
Mildred Miriam Langager Erickstein, 88, peacefully joined her beloved Savior in the Kingdom of God on Sept. 16, 1999.
Mildred "Millie" was born March 26, 1911, the first of six children born to Nickolai and Ida (Hagen) Langager in Estevan, Saskatchewan, Canada. In 1912, the family moved to Velden, S.D., where they leased a farm. In 1917, Nick went to Montana to look over homestead land near Scobey. He decided to work the land and began to build a home. In 1918, the family moved to their new homestead on a parcel of land 20 miles south of Scobey.

In 1918, Millie attended the Tong Grade School which was located six miles south of Scobey. In 1920, she attended the Hughes Country School, 10 miles southeast of Scobey. During this time, Nick moved a small shack near the school where the kids would stay by themselves during the week. In the winter, mother Ida stayed with the children near the school. Millie attended high school in Scobey and graduated in 1930.

After high school, she moved to Rollette, N.D., to work as a cook's assistant. She worked odds jobs in the Scobey area and went back to Rollette in 1934 to work on the dining room staff at the county sanitorium. While at the sanitorium, she found a knack for working with hair, and in 1936 attended and graduated from the beauty college in Great Falls. In 1938, she opened Millie's Beauty Shoppe at Wolf Point in the Liberty Theater building.

In 1936, she met Thor Erickstein, a prominent businessman from Scobey. For the next 12 years, they maintained a long distance courtship between Scobey and Wolf Point. On Feb. 11, 1948, they were united in marriage in Scobey.

She sold her business, moved to Scobey and became a full-time mother to her three daughters, Janis, Arlis, and Shari. In 1958, Thor retired and moved the family to Billings. Millie's brother, Hartvig, built their new home at 1202 Burlington Ave., where they lived until 1996.

Millie is survived by her daughters, Janis Wirkman of Denver, Colo., Arlis (husband Pat) Wolfe of Great Falls and Shari (husband Rick) DeVore of Billings; seven grandchildren, Sonja (husband Chad) Kessner, Jason (wife Monica) Wolfe, Paul (wife JoAnn) Wolfe, Shanel and Jerin Wirkman, Dionne and Derek DeVore; four great-grandchildren; a special devoted niece, Dorian Fournier of Billings; a close great-nephew, Sean (wife Becky) Fournier of Billings; two sisters, Jean (husband Ed) Zugg of Plentywood and Lucille (husband John) Lindsay of Wolf Point; and a brother, Hartvig Langager of Lewiston, Idaho.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Thor (Tommy); sister, June Langager; and brother, Norven Langager.

Mother, your sense of humor, forgiving nature and unselfish love will be greatly missed but cherished forever.

No services are planned in Billings. A viewing will be held on Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, from 3 to 9 p.m. at Michelotti, Sawyers and Nordquist Funeral Home at 1001 Alderson Ave. Internment will be on Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, at the Tagus cemetery in Tagus, N.D.

Memorials may be made to the Foreign Missionary Service, c/o Rev. Dave Peterson, West Side Baptist Church, 323 S. 32nd St. W., Billings, MT 59102.

Marion J. Dowson Rickett
GLENDIVE - Marion J. Dowson Rickett, 63, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, at the Glendive Medical Center Extended Care Facility from complications of ALS-Lou Gehrig's Disease.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20, in the Dawson Memorial cemetery.
Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home is in charge.

Harry Dean Pierson
BUFFALO, Wyo. - Harry Dean Pierson, 78, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, at the Johnson County Health Center.
Visitation will be 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, at the Adams Funeral Home. Graveside funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Willow Grove cemetery.

A. Harvey Karge
WOLF POINT - Harvey Karge, 68, died Friday, Sept. 17, 1999, at the family farm north of Wolf Point of complications from diabetes and heart disease.
Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20, at the Clayton Memorial Chapel.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, at the First Lutheran Church with interment in Greenwood cemetery.
