Valinda Katherine Killsnight
LAME DEER - On Sept. 3, 1999, Valinda Katherine Killsnight, a twin baby girl, was called back to be with our Heavenly Father, "Maheo, " to be a precious angel. On July 14, 1999, Valinda's twin was also called back to be with him. Twin baby Killsnight was three months old premature and Little Valinda Katherine was five months old premature.
The twins will be dearly missed. They will always be in our hearts and part of our family.
Survivors are the parents, Marvin and Laretha Killsnight; two brothers, Emmanuel John Pine and Morning Star John "M.J."; four sisters, Naomi Star, LaShawna Kaye, Cheyenne Star and Marlee Princess, all of Lame Deer; paternal grandparents, Hazel Killsnight and Martin Killsnight of Lame Deer; also numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Valinda was preceded in death by her twin, maternal grandparents, Naomi Swallow and Robert Pine Sr.
Funeral will be at 10 p.m. Thursday, at the Blessed Sacrament Church of Lame Deer. Rausch Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements.

John Michaels Jr.
BASIN, Wyo. - Following a courageous battle with cancer, our dad, grandpa, great-grandpa, friend and husband to our mother for 60 years peacefully left us at Bonnie Bluejacket Nursing Home in Basin on Sept. 7, 1999.
John was born Oct. 1, 1918, at the family homestead south of Burlington to John E. and Elnora (Nicholson) Michaels, the fourth of five sons.
He grew up in the Burlington area, attended school at St. Joe district and graduated from Burlington High School, walking five miles each way much of the time.
John married Helen House, May 21, 1939, in Powell, and they lived and farmed in several areas in the Big Horn Basin except for the summer of 1940 when he and another fellow logged the present Antelope Ski slope using a horse, a crosscut saw and carried a can of kerosene to clean the pitch from the saw blade. In October of 1948 John and Helen left the farm in Burlington and purchased the Conoco bulk business, a school bus and their home in Basin. In 1955 they purchased the Conoco service station which he operated until retirement in 1981. He drove his school bus just a month short of 31 years and savored his association with the students.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading and spending time with his family. He was well acquainted with his great-grandchildren as well as the personal and caring relationship he had with each of his grandchildren.
John was widely known for his flint knapping and bolo ties made from his arrowheads, thunderbirds and ivory elk teeth.
He is a charter member of the Basin Eagles Lodge and served as the first president of the Basin Lions Club in 1957.
John is survived by his wife; daughters, Dorothy (John) Gibler of Basin, Karen (Scotty) Hinman of Lovell; a son, Robert (Sharon) Michaels of Worland; three brothers, George (Delilah) Michaels of Burlington, Bert (Phyllis) Michaels of Grand Junction, Colo., Leonard (Kathleen) Michaels of Thermopolis; sister-in-law, Julia Michaels; and an aunt, Lottie Davis of Burlington; 14 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jim; a brother, Glen; and a grandson, Daniel.
A memorial fund has been established at Security State Bank with pro-ceeds going to the Basin Volunteer Fire Department.
Memorial Funeral Services will be held Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at 11 a.m. in the First Baptist Church in Basin with the Rev. Kent Dempsey officiating.
Atwood Family Funeral Directors Inc. in charge of arrangements.

Alice Barbara Noyd
TOWNSEND - Alice Barbara Noyd, 78, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999, at Townsend Personal Care of natural causes.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Townsend Ward, with interment in Deep Creek cemetery. Connors Funeral Home is in charge.

Lawrence Red Dog
POPLAR - Our dad, Lawrence Red Dog, left us to be with the Lord on Sept. 4, 1999.
He was born to Clifford and Mary Garfield Red Dog on Sept. 5, 1921. He attended schools in Oswego and Wolf Point and enlisted in the Army on June 22, 1940. He served as a squad leader in Guadalcanal and Northern Solomon Islands and was discharged in August 1945. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Service medal, Good Conduct medal, and the American Defense medal.
He married Irene Red Elk in September 1945. They had five children. She preceded him in death in 1953. In September 1954, he married Almena Necklace. There were six children in this marriage and he raised two stepsons.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, church and working in his garden and tending to his trees. He worked in many places throughout northeastern Montana.
He is survived by his wife, Almena; two sons, Maynard Hawk and Rick Hawk of Poplar; seven daughters, Bonita Youpee of Billings, Doris Lambert of Wolf Point, Rhea Red Dog of Billings, Lauren Eder of Lander, Wyo., Verleen Johnson of Medicine Lake, Estelle Red Dog of Bremerton, Wash., and Kara Red Dog of Poplar; 41 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Viewing will be held Wednesday, Sept. 8, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Clayton Memorial Chapel in Wolf Point. A wake will be held at the Poplar Cultural Center on Thursday, Sept. 9, with the service at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. at the Cultural Center and burial will be at the St. Ann's cemetery in Poplar. Danny Lindsey will be officiating. Military rite services will be by Post 54 in Poplar.

Ursula Rose Short (Scott)
Ursula Rose Short, of 825 Howard Ave. and Western Manor Nursing Home, formerly of Red Lodge, died at Western Manor on Sept. 6, 1999. Ursula was born Feb. 16, 1929, in Minot, N.D., one of four children of George and Lula Scott (Sartwell). She was raised in the Burlington/Stockholm area, residing in the agricultural project of Foxholm, north of Minot.
Ursula was united in marriage to Donald Earl Short, Dec. 17, 1947. They lived in Lemmon, S.D., where they were in the dry cleaning business with Don's brother. In 1948 they moved to Red Lodge. There they purchased the Red Lodge Cleaners, which they operated until 1978.
Residing in Red Lodge they became part of the community, feeling Red Lodge was their home. Don was very active in the community church and Ursula worked at the Carbon County Memorial Hospital as a nurse's aide.
Ursula had great enjoyment with the Red Lodge Cleaners Bowling Team and won many first place city bowling trophies. Her friendship with the members of the bowling team and the league members lasted a lifetime. Ursula was a lifelong member of the VFW Auxiliary and kept in contact with the members she met while in Red Lodge.
Moving to Billings in 1976, Ursula continued in the work force working at St. Vincent's Hospital. Later she went to work for the Professional Nursing Pool. Her association with the patients she served and the nurses she worked with were memories very dear to her.
Ursula and Don celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Dec. 17, 1997. Their lives were as man and wife, lover and loved and soul mates. They spent their lives together only being separated at Don's death. Their family and friends all came to Billings for a surprise party that brought them enjoyment and tears of love to all who cared for and about them.
Don preceded Ursula in death on Feb. 3, 1998.
Surviving Ursula are her daughter, Joline Carpenter (Vern) of Billings; sons, David Short (Jennifer Marrone) of Arden Hills, Minn., and Dan Short (Cheryl) of Billings; grandsons, Lott Martin of Lewistown, Danny Short (Tracy) of Billings, Shayne Short of Austin, Texas; step-grandsons, Kelly Skjeret at University of Montana-Missoula, and Lance Skjeret of Denver, Colo.; great-granddaughter, Kirsten Short (Danny and Tracy) Billings.
Cremation has taken place at Smith's Crematory.
Memorial services will be held Thursday, Sept. 9, at 11 a.m. at Mount Olive Lutheran Church, Billings.

Katherine L. Tweden
Katherine (Kay) L. Tweden passed away at her home Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999.
Katherine was born Feb. 19, 1915, in Barnsville, Minn., to Edward and Anna Hermann. Her family later moved to the Fargo, N.D., area. She married Adolph Tweden in 1938. From this union came two boys.
In 1943 the family moved to Logan, Utah, where Adolph worked for the Army Supply Depot in Ogden, Utah, and Katherine worked as a waitress at "The Bluebird" in Logan. In 1955, the family made the move to Billings. Katherine worked at the Dude Rancher and the Northern Hotel until her retirement in 1985 at the age of 70.
She enjoyed and took great pride in her home, baking, her flower gardens and taking care of her family. As a waitress she loved her clientele and had a loving and caring personality. She was always baking for her family or friends. She made wonderful fruit cakes and sold them to her customers and friends at the Northern. She took care of her son's friends as if they were her own. After her retirement she knew great comfort from her son, Paul, who took loving care of her until her death.
preceded in death was her husband, Adolph; son, Thomas; stepsons, Don and Richard Tweden; stepdaughter, Harriet Schaefer; brothers, Fabian, Bill, Edward Hermann; sisters, Dorothy Algier, Blanch Hartley, Alice Rolie; and granddaughter, Carla Lemke with great-grandchildren, Crystal, Anthony and David.
Katherine is survived by her son, Paul A. Tweden of Billings; stepson, Earl Tweden of Moorhead, Minn.; sister, Amy (Harvey) Hilger of Red Lodge; sister, Rose Larson of Fargo; brother, Fred (Sharon) Hermann of Napa, Calif.; 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Katherine, your sense of humor and loving ways will be remembered always.
A vigil service will be held 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist with interment to follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Norma Jean Vaughn
Norma Jean Vaughn, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, went to be with her Savior on Saturday, Sept. 4. 1999.
She was born to Ward and Amy Norton Feb. 9, 1925, in Moore, Okla. She graduated from Newcastle High School, Newcastle, Okla., in 1943. She married Calvin C. Vaughn April 7, 1946. They were devoted to one another for 53 years. She was a loving mother to her five children and a doting grandmother to 11 grandchildren. She was affectionately known as "Granny Jean" to her grandchildren.
She never forgot anyone's birthday nor missed an opportunity to make others feel special. She lived to nurture her family and friends. Her heart was seen through her beautiful handiwork and her Christian service at Rimrock Baptist Church. Granny Jean was a light in so many people's lives and her presence will be missed, but not forgotten.
She is preceded in death by her parents and infant son. She is survived by her loving husband, Calvin C. Vaughn; her son, Bill (Nancy) Vaughn; her three daughters: Jeanetta (Alan) Jarratt, Janice (Mark) Krenzke, Donna (Ross) Riphenburg; her sister, Beth (Cotton) Brown; and her brother, Richard (Connie) Norton. Her grandchildren are: Tracy (Chris) Hornsby, Josh (Becca) Vaughn. Jessica Jarratt, Chris Jarratt, Matthew, Rachael, Paul, Stephen, Siena Krenzke, and Audra and Laura Beth Riphenburg.
Services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2 p.m., at Rimrock Baptist Church. Donations to the American Diabetes Association and the Disabled American Veterans may be given in memory of our beloved Granny Jean in lieu of flowers.
Michelotti Sawyers & Nordquist has charge of arrangements.

Modesto Vera
MILES CITY - Modesto Vera, 37, of Miles City, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999, at St. Vincent Hospital in Billings, as the result of an accident at the Miles City Fairgrounds.
Vigil services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, in the chapel.

Ruth O'Malley Clavadetscher
Ruth O'Malley Clavadetscher, 93 of Billings, died Monday, Sept. 6, 1999, at St. Vincent Hospital. The daughter of James and Mary O'Malley, Ruth was born Dec. 23, 1905, in Lorimor, Iowa. She moved with her family to Billings in 1912, where her father founded O'Malley Lumber Co. She graduated from St. Catherine University in St. Paul, Minn. Ruth married Herman Clavadetscher in Billings in June 1930. Ruth loved gardening and was an avid reader.
Survivors include three sons: Gregory and his wife, Martha of Chatham, N.J.; David and his wife, Kay of Ashtabula, Ohio; and Jules and his wife, Ann of Danville, Calif.; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1984, one brother and three sisters.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial mass will be 12 noon Thursday at St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral with Rite of Committal at Mountview cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the charity of one's choice.

Palmera 'Polly' Dyba
MILES CITY - Palmera "Polly" Dyba, 91, died Monday, Sept. 6, 1999, at the Holy Rosary Extended Care.
Vigil service will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 9 in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Helen Patricia Esch
POWELL, Wyo. - Helen Patricia Esch, 34, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999, at her home of cancer.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at the First United Methodist Church. Ballard Funeral Home is in charge.

Gerald R. Hall
CODY, Wyo. - Gerald R. Hall, 69, died Monday, Sept. 6, 1999, at his home.
Cremation has taken place. Per his wishes, no services are planned. Ballard Funeral Home was in charge.

Doris Hanisch
PLENTYWOOD - Doris Hanisch, 87, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 1999, at Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, at Fulkerson Memorial Chapel with interment in the Plentywood Mausoleum.

Palmer M. Hauge
BIG TIMBER - Palmer M. Hauge passed away Aug. 31, 1999, at the Pioneer Medical Center of cancer. Palmer was born March 3, 1911, on the ranch of his parents, Richard E. and Bina (Omdahl) Hauge. He was united in marriage to Margaret Krone on April 14, 1947, in Reed Point.
He was a ranch hand, rancher, and what he loved best, a horseshoer. He served in the U.S. Cavalry in the South Pacific from June 1942 to Oct. 1945. He was a member of Big Timber American Legion Post #19 for 54 years.
Survivors are his wife, Margaret; two sons, Martin and Karen Hauge of Lennep, Larry and Gayle Hauge of Columbus; one daughter, Beth Breakey of Falkville, Ala.; grandchildren: Jade, Sabrea, Trent and Seth Hauge, Esther and Ira Breakey, and a step grandson, Brandon Brash; two brothers, Donald of Big Timber, and Richard of Harlowton; one sister, Ruth Rostad of Big Timber; and several nieces and nephews. He dearly loved his family. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Henry, Rudolph, and Elmer; two sisters, Marie Satre and Frances Arseth.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services win be held Sept. 9, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the Big Timber Lutheran Church. Memorials may be given to the charity of your choice.

Howard J. Horyna
GREAT FALLS - Howard J. Horyna, 57, of Great Falls, passed away early Sunday morning, at Benefis East Hospital in Great Falls, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born May 12, 1942, in Lewistown, the son of James and Marcella Horyna. He received his education in rural schools near Roy, graduating from Roy High School in 1960. He then worked for various ranchers, a telephone line construction company and the Montana Department of Highways. He then entered the U.S. Army in 1964. He received his discharge in December of 1965 and returned to the Roy area. He again worked for the Department of Highways. On Sept. 16, 1967, he was united in marriage to Millie Bartova in Great Falls. They made their home there and he worked as a warehouseman for Buttrey Foods. He retired in October of 1998 after 31 years with Buttrey Foods. He was looking forward to hunting and fishing especially, with his daughter Patricia.
Howard was a member of the National Rifle Association, Western Fraternal Life Association, Missouri River Shooters Association and Teamsters Local #2.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Millie of Great Falls; one daughter, Patricia Zander and her husband, Bill of Aloha, Ore.; his mother, Marcella Horyna of Roy; one brother, Gene and his wife, Sherry of Roy; uncle, Ray Horyna of Roy; Robert Swoboda and his wife Gladys, and Rudy Swoboda and his wife Amy, all of Billings; numerous cousins.
His father, James, aunt, Annie Horyna and uncle, Raymond Swoboda, and his grandparents preceded him in death.
Memorial services for Howard J. Horyna will be Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Cloyd Chapel, cremation has taken place. The Cloyd Funeral Home of Lewistown and Chapel of Chimes Funeral Home of Great Falls are in charge of arrangements.
Friends may make memorials to the charity of their choice and they may be left at the funeral home.
