Florence Harrington
PLENTYWOOD - The funeral liturgy for Florence Harrington will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 2. Father Benjamin Lobo will celebrate the Mass at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Outlook; interment will be in Outlook cemetery.
Florence, 88, died early Saturday morning, Oct. 30, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital in Plentywood.
Florence was born May 12, 1911, in Schereville, Ind., the youngest of eight children of Michael and Frances (Becker) Klos. In 1915 the family moved to Montana and homesteaded north of Navajo, where Florence attended school through the eighth grade. She met Ben at a dance at the Navajo school in 1925; they were married June 26, 1935, in Scobey. They lived for a time in California, came back to farm in Redstone for awhile; then moved to Archer in 1942. During WWII the family moved to Portland, Ore., where Ben worked in the shipyards for about a year. They then moved back to the farm at Archer, where they were at home until Ben's death.
Florence was a shy, private person with great strength of character. Her marriage vows were sacred; and she made great, lifelong sacrifices for her family. She cared for Ben at home through his declining health, refusing to let him enter the nursing home at the expense of her own health. Renowned for her breads and cinnamon rolls, she was a superb cook and baker, and no visitor left her home without a meal! She was a skilled seamstress and upholsterer; her daughters remember that they could browse through the Sears catalog, and dream of a garment with this feature from one illustration and that feature from another ... and Florence would have it ready for them the next day (and always a perfect fit!) She loved to be at home with her flowers, and play cards, especially Smear, with visitors. She followed soap operas, first on radio, and then on TV, with the many characters seeming to be her close friends, Florence loved babies, and would rock, hug and cuddle all of her new grandchildren for hours. She finished school with the eighth grade, but was an excellent speller, and loved to listen to Ben recite poetry (from memory). Shortly after Ben's death, Sept. 26, 1998, Florence moved to an apartment in Plentywood, then to Montana Pioneer Manor, and in September, to LaCasa Personal Care Center. She remained a devout member of St. Boniface Catholic Church until her death, and as long as she was able she was active in the altar society.
Survivors include two daughters: Sylvia Paulson and her husband, Myrlen of Raymond, and Kathy Wirtz of Outlook; three sons: Bob and his wife, Anita, of Olympia, Wash.; Jim and his wife, Lorraine, of Missoula; and Tom and his wife, Peggy, of Las Vegas, Nev. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Besides her parents, Florence was preceded in death by her husband, Ben; her son Pat, and her son-in-law, Melvin Wirtz. She was the last survivor of her family of eight brothers and sisters.
