Otis B. Lueck
Otis B. Lueck, longtime Billings candy-maker and co-owner of Burton's Candies, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, at Primrose Personal Care Home after a lengthy illness. He was 93.
Otis was born July 12, 1906, in rural Wisconsin, the third of five children born to Otto and Amy Blodgett Lueck. The family moved to Billings when Otis was 6. He attended public schools and was graduated from Billings (Senior) High School. He married Aileen Hudgins on May 2, 1931.
Otis began working for George Burton of Burton Candy Co. at the age of 13, and learned the art of candy making from him. In 1934, he bought the business in partnership with his sister-in-law, Mrs. T. R. (Ceylon) Connor. They kept the name Burton's Candies. Otis ran the factory, and Mrs. Connor operated the restaurant and candy store. Aileen Lueck worked at both places. Otis built a new candy and ice cream factory on South 29th Street and bought Nickey's fountain and newsstand adjacent to the factory. Aileen managed Nickey's until illness forced her retirement. Otis sold Nickey's to his brother-in-law, Owen Bateman, who opened a drug store. Before he retired, Otis sold the candy factory to Sam Doll, owner of Doll House Candies (later Bonnie Lorraine), and worked for him until that business burned.
The Luecks were longtime members of the First Baptist Church, serving for a time as youth sponsors. Otis was head usher of the church for 20 years.
Aileen Lueck was incapacitated by multiple sclerosis for many years at their home, 1304 Lake Elmo Drive, until her death from cancer on April 9, 1985. Otis was devoted to her, and was always her caregiver.
Another love of Otis' was motorcycles, and he always owned at least one until Aileen's ill health forced him to give them up. Before they could afford a car, he even had metal skies made for winter use. He was always a "Harley" man, and thanks to planning and cooperation from some special friends, Otie went on Harley rides (though in a sidecar), to celebrate his 92nd and 93rd birthdays.
Otis is survived by his sister-in-law, Mrs. William (Rhoda) Lueck; her son, Kerry Lueck and his wife, Rochelle; and a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Corum Cunningham, all of Santa Fe, N.M.; a niece, Shelly Bateman Austin of Phoenix; and a nephew, Rev. Bill Connor and his wife, Bethany of Great Falls; many special relatives from Aileen's side of the family; and by his special friends and neighbors, Scott and Karen Bloomenrader and their family of Billings.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; his sisters, Mrs. Madyline (Madge) Case and Mrs. Owen (Katy) Bateman; and his brothers, Livingston (Livy) Lueck and Col. William Lueck.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church in Billings on Nov. 5 at 10 a.m., with Rev. James Taylor, interim pastor, officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church, or a charity of the donor's choice.
