Lila Mae Hines Rippy
Our mother was born June 30, 1910, and at the age of six months was adopted by William and Arvilla Hines of Salem, Ill.
They had already buried three babies and she was so thin that it was predicted that they would bury another, but the naysayers failed to take into account the determination of that tiny red-headed girl.
Raised to know right from wrong and the value of hard work, she and our Dad, Raymond Rippy, raised us the same way as we grew up during the Depression. We never knew we were poor because everyone else was in the same boat.
They had married Oct. 24, 1928, and moved from southern Illinois to northwestern Illinois where the entire Rippy family took up farming. Theirs was a lifelong love and cooperation - interrupted by disagreements. Remember, she was a redhead and Dad knew which buttons to push. They had only her bed and a table and two chairs and a stove loaned from Dad's folks when they set up housekeeping.
Our Grandpa, Dad and his older brother had been coal miners in Odin, Ill. Farmers weren't getting rich in those days, either. And Dad hired out while his Dad and Mom and seven children stayed on the rented place. The move had been made in two cars and a railroad car which took five days to go 300 miles. Horses, cows and furniture and belongings all traveled together.
Mom learned how to be a farm wife the hard way, but learn she did. Long days and hard work were the norm. She worked in the fields alongside Dad, and we were right there, too, under a wagon in the shade in the summer.
They farmed in western Illinois until 1942 when we moved to Barrington, Ill., and in 1952 to the farm they both called home the rest of their lives near Huntley, Ill.
Mom became an aluminum and steel welder at an aircraft plant during World War II and went to work in an industrial sewing machine shop in the 1950s to buy the farm which they paid for in 14 years. The mortgage lender told them that in his experience no one ever paid off a farm loan but used it for collateral for another loan.
Dad had a Holstein dairy and was proud of the butterfat and volume records he attained through careful breeding.
Mom loved animals of all kinds and bought her first Persian cat in 1948. She studied and attended cat shows and over the next 45 years became a judge known for impartiality and fairness. Her cattery was known nationwide for Abyssinian cats of type and deep color as well as superior personalities. She always said that she never had to sell a kitten. They sold themselves when they fell out the cage door into the buyers' hands.
At one time in the '70s, she had nine Quadruple Grand Champion Abyssinian cats in her cattery. She judged shows in nearly every state, Canada, Hawaii and Japan and sold kittens to all of those places as well as Europe. Failing health in 1996 ended the cattery.
Mom was an only child but wholeheartedly took Dad's brothers and sisters as her own.
She was an avid collector of antique furniture and dishes, had an astounding memory and was a generous and loving friend and relative. She also had a love of the big cats and elephants and had been to South and East Africa five times.
She passed away Sunday, Oct. 24, 1999. Our Dad passed away in March of 1989. Their first child died in 1929.
She is survived by her children, Richard (Linda) Ripply of Algonquin, Ill., Thomas "Pat" (Sue) Rippy of Lansing, Mich., and Kathryn "Billie" Hicks of Joliet; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law George; and four sisters-in-law, Doris, Agnes, Alice and Glenda.
Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice. She lived a good life, a full life and would want to be remembered with joy.
Funeral services will be at Dahl Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m. Interment will be in the Union cemetery, Union, Ill.
