Milton Elroy Broadbent
POWELL, Wyo. - Milton Elroy Broadbent, 103, died of natural causes in Powell, Oct. 20, 1999. Mr. Broadbent, affectionately referred to as "Happy" by most of his close friends, was a Wyoming resident for the past 10 years, having come from Reno, Nev. He was born in Cedar Rapids, Neb., to Charles and Cora Broadbent on Dec. 2, 1895. At the age of 5 his family moved to Long Beach, Calif., where he grew up with an older sister and younger brother while learning carpentry from his father.
In 1918 he was inducted into the army and served in France in WWI. In 1920 he married Helen O. Horsely, a union that lasted until Helen's death in 1977. One son, Robert V. Broadbent, was the product of that marriage.
Mr. Broadbent had an uncanny skill for mechanical detail and woodworking. This talent landed him in the motion picture industry where he spent the majority of his working years as a prop maker in special effects. He worked for RKO, Universal, Walt Disney and Republic. He retired from studio work and membership in the International Association of Theatrical and Stage Employees Union at the age of 65 and moved to Reno with his wife to be close to his son and grandchildren.
His retirement years in Reno were spent helping his wide circle of friends with various woodworking jobs including cabinetry, remodeling, creations and repairs. Milton was not one for ceremony or fancy clothes, but he was generous with himself, keen-witted and devoted to the time spent with friends and family. He loved camping, hunting and fishing and riding his motorcycle with fellow members of a senior citizen motorcycle club known as the "Retreads." But his tools were his true treasures. They represented a lifetime collection of specialty and hard-to-get items that permitted him expressions of creation, a love that accompanied him to his last breath.
When his son, Robert, retired from his Reno medical practice in 1989 and moved to Wyoming to pursue ranching, Milton, at 93 and still in remarkably good health, went along. And of course he brought all of his precious tools. It was only after his 100th birthday that he found it necessary to move to a retirement facility in Powell where he spent his remaining few years. But even during the autumn of his life he made frequent trips to the ranch in Cody to make sure everything was running smoothly and that he wasn't needed for help. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving were high points in Happy's life for it was on such occasions that all of his family were together. He is now interred next to his wife in Reno's Mountain View cemetery.
Mr. Broadbent is survived by a son, Dr. Robert Broadbent of Cody; a daughter-in-law, Joan Broadbent of Cody; two grandsons, Lance Broadbent of Minneapolis and Jeffrey Broadbent of Los Gatos, Calif.; a granddaughter, Allison Betz of Cody; three nieces, Faei Gould and Ruth Fletcher, both of Powell, and Delora Jeann Christensen of Boise, Idaho; two step-granddaughters, Jane Miller and Laura Keene, both of Powell; a step-grandson, Dana Solomon of Manteca, Calif.; and eight great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Happy's life is scheduled in Reno at 3 p.m. Oct. 30. For details call (775) 825-3461 evenings. In lieu of flowers please make remembrance contributions to Powell Medical Foundation's Nursing Home Fund, Powell, Wyo. 82435.
