LAME DEER - Leland James Pond Sr. (Assiniboine name translated Young Man Chief), 56, of Lame Deer, passed away Oct. 17, 1999, at his home in a sudden, unfortunate 4-wheeler (ATV) accident.
He was born March 12, 1943, to James and Camilla Pond in the family home near Lodge Pole on the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation. He graduated from Wolf Point High School and Montana State University at Bozeman. He then successfully completed his studies receiving a Juris Doctorate from UCLA Law School in 1971.
Leland married his college sweetheart, Doreen Flatness, on March 29, 1965. Together they raised two children who were the light of his life and gave him much pride: a daughter Diane Lea Pond, MD, and son, Leland James Pond Jr.
He had an impressive list of career accomplishments. Upon graduating in the top of his class at UCLA Law School, he retained a position as an attorney for Native American Rights Fund. From there he served as the tribal attorney for the Northern Cheyenne Tribe. During this term, he had the recognition of being the first attorney to file an Indian water rights suit which was eventually successful and became a precedent for other Indian Water Rights Suits.
He also worked for the Billings Solicitors Office as a field solicitor. In spite of being offered many opportunities to work in more glamorous, high-paying positions in cities around the country, his love for Montana as a home for his family took priority over his career. He chose to work in Montana. In addition to working for St. Labre Indian School in Ashland and Dull Knife Memorial College in Lame Deer, he most recently served as Chief Judge at Fort Belknap. He was a member of the Montana Bar Association, the North Dakota Bar Association and the Federal Bar Association.
Leland enjoyed the outdoor lifestyle, shooting, hunting big game and running out in the hills. At age 56, he consistently would run eight miles a day at least four days a week. His friends and family loved his outgoing and gregarious personality. He was an avid sports fan, his favorite football team was the Denver Broncos. He could often be found at the local high school and grade school basketball games cheering on his children, nieces and nephews. Leland was always quick with a joke, words of encouragement and a handshake that hid a spare 10 or 20 dollar bill to light up their faces. His accomplishments in obtaining a law degree as well as his unique outlook on life were an inspiration to many.
He was preceded in death by his father, James Pond and brother, Ken Pond.
He is survived by his wife, Doreen of Lame Deer; his daughter, Diane Pond, MD and husband, John Flying Jr. of Phoenix, AZ; his son, Jim Pond and Jenifer of Lapwai, Idaho; his mother, Camilla Pond of Wolf Point; his brothers, Allen Pond and wife, Enola of Sausalito, Calif., Michael Pond and wife, Wanda of Albuquerque, N.M., Jerry Pond and wife, Kee of Nebraska; his sisters, Phyllis Culbertson and husband, Albert (Greek) of Littleton, Colo., and Sharon LaRose and husband, Eric of Phoenix, Ariz.; his adopted sisters, Barbara Garfield and husband, Dan, and Elaine Sears of Wolf Point; his brother-in-law, Lonnie Flatness and sister-in-law, Roberta Foote of Lame Deer; as well as many nieces and nephews.
