Tom returned to God on Oct. 12, 1999, in Billings. He was born in Butte on June 18, 1923, the son of Thomas C. and Nellie Malee. After attending Montana Tech in Butte, he entered the U.S. Army during World War II. He had planned to become a physician, and, because of the need for medical personnel during the war years, he was sent to Yale University in New Haven, Conn., and to Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., where he received his Medical Degree in 1947.
While at Creighton, he met the love of his life, Anne Cronin Malee, and they were married on Aug. 24, 1946. After graduating from medical school, Tom continued his medical training until he was called back into service during the Korean Conflict. In 1952, Tom and Anne settled in Glendive, where he established a successful medical practice. He built the Yellowstone Medical Center where he practiced for nearly 40 years. Tom also served as medical director of the Eastmont Center in Glendive and provided charitable medical service for numerous organizations. Through the years, Tom saved the lives of many in Eastern Montana, and enhanced the lives of many more.
Dr. Malee was active in his community and profession. He became board-certified in Family Practice Medicine soon after the specialty was established. He was appointed by the Governor to the Montana State Board of Medical Examiners where he served for nearly 19 years, which is believed to be a national record, including terms as President of the Board, where he sought to bring compassion and responsibility to the regulation of medicine in Montana. He continued to serve in the Army Reserve, retiring as a full Colonel. Before his military retirement, Tom was able to serve his last six months on active duty in Georgia, and he and Anne greatly enjoyed the experience.
Tom had a deep spiritual faith, which he passed along to his children. He was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus, and active in his church. Tom loved music and sang in the Church Choir for a number of years. He led the fund-raising drive for the construction of the Catholic school in Glendive in the 1960s. Tom and Anne were both active in the Cursillo movement in the 1970s.
Tom and Anne were accomplished athletes, enjoying tennis, swimming, and skating, and they instilled a love for athletics in their children. In 1991, they built a lodge in Western Montana, and greatly enjoyed spending their summers there among children and grandchildren. In 1996, Tom and Anne celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the lodge. In later years, Tom cared for his wife before her passing.
Tom was a man who was deeply loved by his family, friends, and patients. He had a great love for his family. After his wife of 52 years, Anne, passed away in November 1998, he spent time with his children, most recently with his son, Tom, in Billings.
Dr. Malee was predeceased by his wife, Anne Marie, and his father and mother, Thomas C. and Nellie Malee.
He is survived by his children: Tom of Billings; Nancy Oreskovich of Newport Beach, Calif.; Mary (Dr. Eddie) Crowley of Helena; Kevin (Kris) of Spokane; Con of Anaconda; Tim (Susan) of Dallas; Bridget (Dr. Ron) Rubin of Marblehead, Mass.; and Kate (Jordan) Boucher; 15 grandchildren, Anne Oreskovich, Chris, Nellie, Nick, Bridgid, and Micah Crowley, Kassie, Konnor and Kolt Malee, D.J., and Brian Malee, Hannah and Jake Rubin, and Isabelle and Jordan Boucher.
