Elvina Sayle
Once upon a time (March 7, 1903), in the kingdom of Chicago, Ill., a beautiful Princess was born. Her parents, Niels Nielsen and Pauline Paulsen, named her Elvina. She was the last of their 11 children and she was much adored. Elvina was christened on the day her older sister Anna was married .
On Nov. 26, 1924, Elvina married George H. Ackerman and realized her dream of becoming a Queen. She and George had three children, George, Carol and Robert, and lived happily (although not without struggle since the Great Depression was on) for many years. Shortly before celebrating 30 years of marriage tragedy struck, George passed away in August, 1954.
Her reign as Queen of the family continued. She lived to help her children and grandchildren, which over time would grow to number 12. Love found Elvina again and on Feb. 4, 1961, she married Almer Sayle. Their union, though short, brought much happiness and laughter to her and her family. Sadly, Al passed away in 1967.
Elvina turned to her family for support and once again reigned alone. She no longer wanted anyone to call her by her given name. She only wanted to be Grama. She worked for many years as a bookkeeper and when not working involved herself with church and family activities. She loved to play cards with the "Cousins Club" and attended many church functions. Although alone at home she was never truly alone. Her family and faith in God sustained her.
In October, 1983, at the age of 80, Grama moved from Chicago to Billings to be closer to her daughter, Carol. In February, 1984, she was welcomed into the membership of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, that was a very happy day for her.
Sadly, in 1985 her youngest son, Robert, passed away. She grieved for him but knew that some day she would rejoin him in the Kingdom of Heaven. Tragedy hit home once again when in March, 1998, her daughter, Carol, passed away. This was especially hard since Grama had come to rely on her as the years passed. Once again her beliefs sustained her but she asked, "Why has God taken my children before me?" She knew there was no answer at the time. She knows the answer now because she is with God. She has all the answers now.
Grama had a wonderful sense of humor, which she has passed on to all of us. She was ready to go. She knew her time was coming soon and was ready to meet her maker. She said she wasn't going to buy green bananas any more! She went suddenly, at home, on Oct. 6, 1999. All the staff and residents at The Vista at Mission Ridge made the last five months of her life especially happy. We, her family, would like to say Thank You to everyone there for making life so enjoyable for her. We know you'll miss her, as will we.
Grama is survived by son, George Ackerman of Kingman Ariz.; son-in-law, Lenny Mengell; grandchildren: Bill (Linda) Ackerman, Chris (Val) Ackerman, Tina (Andre) Visser, Kurt Ackerman, Lori (Lou) Arnone, Carrie (Todd) Haymaker, Andy (Betsy) Ackerman, John (Joanne) Ackerman, Anne Ackerman, Karen (Dennis) Boggio, Daniel (Martha) McCormack, Kathi (Ervin) Schweigert; and great-grandchildren: Denise and Joe Boggio, Shaun and Tarnessa Visser, Mike Schweigert, Kellen, Harper, Eric and Gregory Ackerman, and Ryan and Brett Ackerman.
Grieve if you must, but Grama would have preferred you celebrate her life. Her journey has ended and she is now reunited with all of the family that has gone before her.
Good-bye Grama. Say hello to Mom for us.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Mt. Olive Lutheran Church.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, 2336 St. John's. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Viewing will be noon-9 p.m. Monday at Smith West Chapel, 304 34th St. W. and an hour prior to services at the church.
