Nancy Lee Mandeville Asay
SUPERIOR - Nancy Lee Mandeville Asay, 62, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at St. Patrick's Hospital, Missoula.
Our beloved wife, mother and grandmother returned home to her Father in Heaven and family members gone before her, to watch over her children and grandchildren. After surviving cancer at the age of 38, she continued in a life-long battle against related illnesses and complications. Surrounded by her family, she passed away following a beautiful rendition by the Challis Repose. Her love for music was a dedication to her in her final moments of life.
Nancy Lee Mandeville was born on Jan. 23, 1937, in Columbus, where she attended public schools and helped in her family's grocery store. She married Ernest Ray Asay, of Lovell, Wyo., on July 16, 1955, in the Congregational Church in Columbus. She enjoyed gardening and working in her flower beds. She was well known for her talents which include cooking, flower arranging, singing, and playing the piano. She had many students over the years and through them was able to convey her love for music and talent for playing.
Mother had a great concern for all of her children and grandchildren. She loved giving gifts, and always remembered every birthday, holiday and important event in their lives. Her gifts were thoughtfully chosen and unique to each person.

Jacob Carl 'J.C.' Latka
This world lost one of the last of a generation who didn't know what it meant to quit. Jacob Carl "J.C." Latka, age 94, died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at the Sidney Health Center Extended Care, where he had resided since April of this year.
Jake Latka was born in Galicia, Poland, June 7, 1905, the eldest son of Frank and Agnes Potonaic Tretrzak Latka. In 1910 his family set out on a 19-day trip across the Atlantic Ocean to Immigrate to the U.S. landing in New York. The family made their way to Cleveland, Ohio for a short while before homesteading in the Cracker Box community 25 miles west of Glendive. His life revolved around farming, either celebrating it or cursing it, but never giving up! He left home at age 17 to help support his family and worked for others in farming, on the railroad and in Glacier and Yellowstone Parks. He was united in marriage on Nov. 26, 1927, to Pauline Tularski. They were engaged in farming in the Savage area from 1927 until 1943, when he purchased six sections of land in the Enid area, "retiring" in 1968. He found that he had a "few good years" left in him and that retirement was not for him so he purchased the McChesney place nine miles south of Sidney. He was actively engaged in farming until the age of 85, at which time he sold the farm to L.C. Anvik. He tried valley farming in the early years, but eventually found a passion for dry land farming, and raising cattle. His wealth of knowledge came from his life experiences and he was known as a "hard man to work for" because he believed in working hard and getting it right the first time. He helped out others when he could, and even times when he couldn't. Surviving the early days was an accomplishment in itself, and he would tell the stories of his life with a matter of fact attitude that was so like him.
Some of his most precious moments were spent with his family and grandchildren. When tragedy would come to the family, he would be broken-hearted, but he trusted his faith in God, and would pull the family together. He was a man that worked hard, and played hard also. He enjoyed his children and their families, fishing and relaxing at his cabin at Rock Creek, playing his accordion and harmonica, dancing, making bird houses and watching the birds, raising rabbits, a cold drink and a game of chance and tending to the garden, plum and apple trees.
He was a member of St. Matthew's Parish, Knights of Columbus, Elks, and Moose, Jake was involved with Mid-Rivers and the ASCS offices when they were first getting started. He enjoyed spending time with his buddies at the Moose, where he was a life-time member.
When his health declined and he was no longer able to live life to the fullest he prayed to be taken home and in the early morning hours of Oct. 8, 1999, God called and he went peacefully in his sleep.
Left to mourn, but who rejoice in his eternal reward are: children, Joseph C. Latka, Valencia, Calif. Doris (Paul) Morasko, Sidney; Shirley O'Connor (Phil), Batesville, Miss.; son-in-law, Clair Clark, Lewistown; and brothers, Tony, Albert, and John (Opal) Latka, all of Glendive; a sister, Rose (Robert) Olson, St. Charles, Ill. He was a Grandpa to 12 and Great-Grandpa Jake to many. He was Uncle Jake to numerous nieces and nephews, and will be missed by his dear friends, Rose Fink, and Joe and Ann Frank of Sidney.
Those who preceded him in death were his wife of 55 years, Pauline; his daughter, Lillian Clark; sisters, Sophie Mittlieder and Annie Pisk; three great-grandchildren: Amy Jo Peterson, Scotti Jo Taflan and Lucio Scotti Taflan.
Wake service will be Monday Oct. 11, at the Fulkerson Memorial Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 12, at the St. Matthew's Catholic Church with interment in the Sidney cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney. Memorials may be directed to the charity of your choice.
