Edward Henry Daley
WEST YELLOWSTONE - Edward Henry Daley, 91, of West Yellowstone, passed away Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, in Bozeman.

Ed was born March 13, 1908, to William and Catherine Daley; he was the youngest of their three children. His birth took place on the family farm south of Pine City, Minn.

Ed's earliest memories were of his maternal grandmother, Bridget O'Reilly, who told him tales of Old Ireland and taught him to drink black tea in the manner of his Irish progenitors. His formal schooling began at Rock Lake Country School, where he was in attendance until 7th grade, from the 8th grade through his sophomore year he attended school in Pine City. In 1923 Ed moved to Keewaten, Minn., where he graduated in 1925. Ed went on to study civil engineering and play hockey at Hibbing (Minn.) Junior College.

When not in school, Ed worked in the Northern Minnesota forest, cutting timber with axe and crosscut saw. He worked in the rough-and-tumble camps of the Virginia Rainy Lake Timber Co. and also the Finnegan Lumber Co. Ed also worked in the underground mines of the Mesabi Iron Range and it was, no doubt, in these settings that the basis of Ed's honest, hardworking, bare-knuckled, stern character was formed.

Ed suffered a few bouts of pneumonia as a result of his time spent in the deleterious environment of the underground mines, and was, at length, advised by a local doctor to move to a drier climate where his injured lungs might replace themselves. Ed heard of work in Yellowstone Park and headed west. He arrived in Yellowstone in May of 1929 and began work for Mr. C.A. Hamilton of Hamilton Stores Inc. Ed spent the next 47 years in the employ of Hamilton Stores working as service station attendant, laborer, truck driver, engineer, plumber, painter, carpenter, food service manager, warehouse manager, buyer, and finally vice-president.

Ed took time out to serve in the Merchant Marine during World War II, making several Pacific crossings by both southern and northern routes - surviving sea sickness, torpedoes, Kamikazes and typhoons.

After World War II, Ed returned to Yellowstone and resumed a longtime acquaintance with Ellen Peterson; they were married April 21, 1950. Their first and only child, Tim, was born Sept. 6, 1951.

Ed retired from Hamilton Stores in 1976. In 1987, Ed and his family acquired the Gusher Pizza and Sandwich Shoppe in West Yellowstone; the family has operated the "Gusher" continuously since.

Ed is survived by his wife, Ellen; son, Timothy; granddaughters, Aislinn June Daley, Erin Marie Daley, and Melinda Hope Daley, all of West Yellowstone; nephews, Patrick Daley of West Yellowstone, and William Daley of Olympia, Wash.; niece, Mary Jo Williams of Fairbanks, Alaska; and numerous cousins. Ed was preceded in death by his brother and sister.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at Our Lady of the Pines Catholic Church in West Yellowstone. Interment will follow the service at Fir Ridge cemetery.
