Beatrice R. Hershberger
DENTON - Beatrice R. Hershberger, 73, of Denton, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at the Central Montana Medical Center in Lewiston of an apparent heart attack.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, at the Denton Bible Church with interment in Forest Grove cemetery. The Cloyd Funeral Home of Lewistown is in charge.

Esther Holler
CODY, Wyo. - Esther Holler, 78, of Cody, passed away Oct. 3, 1999, in the West Park Long Term Care Center in Cody after a long battle with cancer.
She was born July 6, 1921, in North Platte, Neb., to Richard and Margaret Briseno and came to Wyoming with her family in 1924. Her school days were spent in Casper, Shoshoni and Riverton.
Esther married Roger Holler on Sept. 28, 1952, in Cody. She and her husband were charter members of Grace Baptist Church and remained active in it. For many years, she worked as secretary for Cody Treater Service, an oil field service that Roger owned and operated until ill health forced his early retirement in 1987. She volunteered her time driving for Rolling Meals for several years. She loved to garden and to spend time with her children, grandchildren and friends.
Survivors include one son, Richard A. "Rick" Holler and Cindy of Cody; daughters, Sharon Gonzalez and Manual of Cody; Judith Diaz and Frank of Bellingham, Wash.; Roberta "Bobbie" Carpenter and Ray of Powell; and Margaret Benshoof-Holler of San Francisco, Calif.; grandchildren: Shane Carpenter of Portland, Ore.; Heidi Deming of LaGrande, Ore.; Brad Osborne of Bellingham; Bryan Osborne of Hawick, Minn.; Travis and Danielle Holler of Cody; two great-grand-children, Joshua and Jessica Osborne of Bellingham; three sisters: Rose Smith of Medford, Ore.; Roberta Hayes of Talent, Ore.; and Georgia Couch of Sheridan; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger, on March 16, 1992; her mother in 1983; a sister, Geraldine Leach, in 1980; and her father in 1942.
Funeral services for Mrs. Holler will be held at Grace Baptist Church on Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Carl LoTurco officiating. Burial will be at Riverside cemetery in Cody. Ballard Funeral Home is in charge of arrange-ments.
Memorials may be made to Spirit Mountain Hospice, 707 Sheridan Ave., Cody, WY 82414 or the American Cancer Society in Esther's memory.

Helen L. Irion
OLIVE - Helen L. Irion, 81, of Olive, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at her sister's home in Billings.
Visitation will be 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Broadus. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, in the Powder River Congregational Church in Broadus with interment in the Valley View cemetery.

Joseph J. Koch Jr.
LEWISTOWN - Joseph J. Koch Jr., 85, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at the Central Montana Medical Center of natural causes.
Vigil services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, at St. Leo's Catholic Church. Funeral Liturgy will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, at the church with interment in Mount Calvary cemetery. The Cloyd Funeral Home is in charge.

Edward U. Larson
MEETEETSE, Wyo. - Edward U. Larson, 94, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at West Park Long Term Care Center in Cody.
Visitations will be 5-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, at Ballard Funeral Home in Cody. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Meeteetse with interment in Meeteetse cemetery.

Dora L. Nelson
HARDIN - Dora L. Nelson, 91, of Hardin, formerly of Westby, passed away peacefully in her sleep Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, in the Big Horn County Memorial Nursing Home in Hardin. Pastor Barbara Westhoff will officiate at private graveside rites at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, in the Westby cemetery; Memorial Funeral Services will follow at 2 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Westby.
She was born Feb. 10, 1908, in Cannon Falls, Minn., a daughter of Otto and Freda (Lindstrom) Enger. As a child, she moved with her parents to a homestead north of Westby. She attended schools in Westby and was a member of the first graduating class from Westby High School in 1925. Following her education, she worked as a U.S. Postal clerk and later for the Westby Meat Market. She married Tony Nelson on Feb. 3, 1929, in Westby and the couple owned and operated the John Deere dealership for many years. They celebrated 62 years of marriage before Mr. Nelson died in 1991. She was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Quilting Club, the Jolly Twelve Card Club, Westby Civic Improvement Club and the Senior Citizens. She enjoyed her yard, flowers, family and playing whist. Above all she loved people, and just being with her friends. Trips to Plentywood on the Senior Citizen's Bus were the highlights of recent years; but many remember the warmth of Dora's kitchen and fresh baked cookies ... always served with love.
Dora was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Sharon Patricelli; one sister, Marjorie Peterson; and one brother, Raymond Enger. Survivors include her daughter, Marlene (Dr. Robert) Whiting Jr. of Hardin; her four grandchildren, Lois and her husband, Larry Kays, Marc and his wife, Cheryl Whiting, Craig and his wife, Michelle Whiting, and Shelley Murphy; and seven great-grandchildren: Chad, Melissa, and Rebecca Kays; Colin, Caleb, Colton, and Madison Whiting.
Bullis Mortuary of Hardin and Fulkerson Funeral Home of Plentywood have charge of arrangements. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Westby, or to the charity of one's choice.

Erick A. Olson
GLASGOW - Erick A. Olson, 91, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at Our Place of natural causes.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, at Hinsdale Legion Hall with interment at Hillview cemetery, both in Hinsdale. Bell Mortuary is in charge.

Lucille B. Porcarnie
LEWISTOWN - Lucille Brabender Porcarnie, 72, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at a Lewistown nursing home of natural causes.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, in Philbrook cemetery in Hobson. The Cloyd Funeral Home of Lewistown is in charge.

Terry S. Preator
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Terry Stanley Prestor, 62, formerly of Burlington, Wyo., died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, in Las Vegas.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, in the Burlington cemetery. Haskell Funeral Home of Lovell, Wyo., is in charge.

Gerald Paul Sherman
BALLANTINE - Gerald Paul Sherman, 81, of Ballantine, passed away Sunday morning, Oct. 3, 1999, of natural causes.
Born on Aug. 17, 1918, to homesteaders Paul and Eva Cummins Sherman, he attended Garnsey School and graduated from Huntley Project School, class of 1937. Gerald married Johannah Schneider on Dec. 6, 1947, in Worden, and they raised eight children on the family farm.
Gerald was an engineer at Great Western Sugar Factory until the steam engine was retired. He took pride in his work, his livestock, his garden and his family.
Mr. Sherman was preceded in death by his wife, Johannah; two children, Gary and Linda; his brother, Alvin; three sisters: Mildred Wells, Elaine Supola and Dolores Johnson; and two grandchildren, John Paul and Gail Renee. Survivors include his sisters, Oma Reinke of Billings and Neva Howell of Washington; his children, Debbie and Gary Stenulson of Warden; Clayton Sherman of Huntley; Phyllis and Joseph Rapp of Shepherd; Robin and Marcy Sherman, and Delbert and Melissa Sherman, both of Ballantine; Penny and James Lyon of Colstrip; 20 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitations will begin Wednesday morning at the Smith Downtown Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 7, at the Bethlehem Congregational Church in Worden with interment to follow at the Pleasantview cemetery in Ballantine. Smith Downtown Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Marie D. Sherrill
Marie D. Sherrill died on Oct. 2, 1999, while staying with her daughter in Bellevue, Wash. She was born on Dec. 24, 1913, in Lewistown. She graduated from Fergus County High School in 1931, attended Eastern Montana Normal School in Billings, graduating in 1933. Her first teaching position was in a one-room rural schoolhouse outside of Lewistown. She married Sam C. Moe in 1934. Mr. Moe was a respected building contractor in Billings. Mr. Moe died in 1952.
After working in the offices of the Pure Oil Co. and Carter Oil Co., Marie went back to Eastern Montana College and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Education in 1960. She taught school in Montana for the next 25 years. First, after her family, came her love of education, and her love and pride in Montana. Marie was especially proud to say that five generations of her family were born in Montana, beginning with her mother, Eunice Day, who was born in the gold mining town of Maiden when Montana was still a territory.
In 1953, Marie married Chris Thom, a Lavina rancher. He died in 1969, She married H. H. "Mae" Mclntyre, a longtime Billings family friend in 1970. He died in 1974. In 1979 she married E. T. Marvin Sherrill in Cody, Wyo. For nine years they were "snowbirds" going back and forth from Cody to Sun City, Ariz. In 1995, they moved to Billings. Marvin died in May 1996. Marie spent her remaining years living with her son, Howard, in Billings and Henderson, Nev., and with her daughter, Diana, in Bellevue, Wash.
Marie is survived by her two children, Howard (Rosemary) Moe of Billings, and Diana (Richard) Miller of Bellevue; stepson, Marvin T. (Julie) Sherrill and sons, Tim and Dan of Watertown, S.D.; grandchildren, Mark Moe of Billings; Marlene (Gino) Lauretta of Henderson; Mitchell (Lani) Moe of Henderson; and Amy (Michael) Bazemore of Atlanta, Ga. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren and her faithful companion, Lady Bird. She was preceded in death by her two brothers, Leonard Day of Billings, and Felix Day of Vacaville, Calif.
Marie had an active interest in politics and current affairs, She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Mizpah White Shrine Number 4, Delta Kappa Gamma, NRTA, NARFE, Rebekahs, Royal Neighbors and the Grace United Methodist Church of Billings.
Marie will always be remembered for her cheerful giving to the welfare and education of her family.
Michelotti-Sawyers and Nordquist Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements. Visitation will be held at 1001 Alderson, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 7, and funeral services will be held at the Grace United Methodist Church at 1935 Ave. B on Friday, Oct. 8, at 11 a.m. Burial will take place at the Mountview cemetery in Billings.
Memorials may be sent to the Shriners Children's Hospital Fund, Shrine Temple, P.O. Box 20673, Billings, MT 59104.

Sylvia Stoddard
Sylvia Stoddard was born in Billings on Aug. 25, 1935, the third child of James and Annie Patterson. She died Sunday morning, Oct. 3, 1999, at the Evergreen Health and Rehab Center.
Sylvia worked for 27 years at the Billings Hotel and Convention Center. She loved to be around her family, co-workers, neighbors and friends. Her favorite pastimes were knitting afghans for others, and doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles.
Ms. Stoddard was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Margery Woods; one niece and three nephews. She is survived by two sons, Rodney and Rodger Stoddard; three daughters: Barbara Ferris, Deanna Caudill and Lynda Anton; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Hubert and Norman Patterson.
Visitations will begin Tuesday morning at Smith Downtown Chapel and conclude at 9 am. on Wednesday. The casket will be closed at the church. Funeral services will be held at 11 am. on Wednesday, Oct. 6, at the Evangelical United Methodist Church with interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Smith Downtown Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Lyle Tauck
HAMMOND - Lyle Tauck, 68, of Hammond, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at the Dahl Memorial Hospital in Ekalaka.
Visitation will be 1-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, at Stevenson's Funeral Home in Ekalaka. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, at the Carter County High School Gymnasium in Ekalaka with interment in the family lot of the I.O.O.F. cemetery.

Charles W. 'Bill' Whitlock
POWELL, Wyo. - Charles W. "Bill" Whitlock, 73, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999,
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, at the First Baptist Church with interment at Crown Hill cemetery. Miratsky-Easton Funeral Home is in charge.

Paul 'Slim' Belus
SHERIDAN, Wyo. - Paul "Slim" Belus, 88, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, at Sheridan Manor.
No services are planned. Ferries Funeral Home is in charge.

James H. Benish
MISSOULA - James H. Benish, 88, of Missoula, died Saturday, Oct. 2, at the Hillside Manor Nursing Home of natural causes.
He was born on Sept. 14, 1911, in Cut Bank, where his parents, Dorothy (Jesse) and John C. Benish homesteaded. The family later moved to Missoula where Jim attended and graduated from Missoula County High School in 1929. He graduated from the University of Montana in 1933 with a bachelor's degree in Chemistry. He served in the U.S. Marines in San Diego, Calif. and Bremerton, Wash. He married Shirley R. Knight in Bremerton in 1943.
Jim worked as a chemist for Exxon Oil Company for over 30 years. He began his career in Cut Bank when the company was known as Carter Oil. His daughter, Dayl Ann, and son, James Knight, were born in Cut Bank before the family moved to Billings, where Jim worked until his retirement. After retiring, he and Shirley moved to Missoula. They had many wonderful years of traveling before Shirley died in 1986.
Jim was very active in a number of organizations. He was a life member of Elks, Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. He also volunteered with the RSVP program and spent many hours reading for the Radio Reading Services. He was active in Missoula Senior Citizens activities including singing with the "Mellowaires." Jim was also an active member of St. Anthony's and St. Francis parishes in Missoula.
Jim was a loving grandfather and was very proud of his grandchildren, Karl and Clare Benish of Helena, and Erika and Leif Fredrickson of Missoula.
Jim had a special love of animals and was an active supporter of the Missoula Humane Society. His other special hobbies were gardening and baking bread. Besides his grandchildren, Jim is survived by his son, James K. Benish and his wife, Barbara of Helena, and his daughter, Dayl Fredrickson and her husband, Mike of Missoula. He is also survived by his sisters, Marian Lewis of Salem, Ore., and Dorothy Stuart of Helena, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church.
A memorial mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, at the church with Father Emmit Kelly as celebrant. A luncheon will follow in the parish hall. Placement of the urn will be in Sunset Memorial cemetery.
The family suggests memorials may be made in Jim's name to Radio Reading Services, 126 E. Broadway, Missoula, MT 59801, the Missoula Humane Society, 1105 Clark Fork Drive, Missoula, MT 59802 or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Jack Dempsey
Jack Dempsey, 86 of Billings, died Saturday Oct. 2, 1999, at the Billings Deaconess Hospital.
Jack was born Sept. 6, 1913, in Butte, to John Joseph Dempsey and Esther Dempsey. He attended Butte Central High School and Utah State University on a football scholarship. He graduated with a degree in Business Administration and a minor in Physical Education. In 1939 he and Dorothy Moline were married in Boulder, and celebrated 60 years of marriage this past summer. They have two children, Carolyn Dempsey Swank and her husband, Dewey Swank of Great Falls, and John J. Dempsey and his wife, Sandra Dempsey of Huntington Beach, Calif. He has four grandchildren: Dieter and Dustin Swank and Jonathan and Andrew Dempsey, and three great-grandchildren: KayDee, Emily and Riley Swank. He is also survived by his sister, Catherine Sullivan of Butte; a cousin, Audrey Rice of Billings; and numerous nieces and nephews in Montana.
Jack worked as a miner, roofer, Border Patrol of both borders, insurance sales representative, and customs inspector. He also taught school in Eastern Montana and was Superintendent of schools at Frazer.
He was an avid sports enthusiast and followed all of the local teams. He enjoyed playing football, hand and racket ball, tennis and had been a boxer in his youth. Jack also was very active in the community with various volunteer affiliations, Moss Mansion, Park Board, Council of Aging, referee, tax returns for retirees, the Tourist Center, and treasurer of Billings Preservation Society. He also was a member of the Lions, and Village Golden K Kiwanis of Billings.
He and Dorothy traveled around the U.S., Mexico, Canada, and Europe. He was a very devoted husband, father and grandfather. He will be missed by his family and the community.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Mortuary, 1001 Alderson Ave. Following the services a reception will be held at the Elks Club, 934 Lewis Ave.
Memorials may be made to Village Golden K Kiwanis, P.O. Box 20203, Billings, MT 59104-0203 for their youth programs.

Keith Dickinson
BROADUS - Keith Dickinson, 75, died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at his home of natural causes.
Visitation will be 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, at Wilson Funeral Home in Gillette, Wyo. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at First Presbyterian Church in Gillette with interment at Mount Pisgah cemetery.
