Earl L. Liggett
WHITEWOOD, S.D. - Earl L. Liggett, 72, formerly of Shepherd, Mont., died Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, at his home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23, at the Belle Fourche Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with interment in the Black Hills National cemetery. The Funeral Home of the Northern Hills is in charge.

Opal Lillian 'Lil' Stringer
GREAT FALLS - Funeral services for Opal Lillian "Lil" Stringer will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 22. Pastor Grant Patterson will officiate at the service at the Medicine Lake Lutheran Church; interment will be in Medicine Lake cemetery. Lil, 89, formerly of Medicine Lake, died Thursday evening at Missouri River Manor in Great Falls, where she had lived for the last several years.
Opal, the oldest child of Frank and Caroline (Danielson) Snellman, was born June 24, 1910, at the Danielson family home in DeLamere, N.D. The family moved to a farm east of Medicine Lake in 1917. She attended grade school for only six years, but proudly passed her eighth grade exams. On Nov. 10, 1932, she married Ervin T. Stringer in Sidney. They farmed east of Medicine Lake for many years, but lived most of the time in town. She was a member of the Medicine Lake Lutheran Church, the Women of the Moose, and the Sheridan County Historical Society. When her health began to fail, she moved to the Missouri River Manor in Great Falls, to be near her children, but in her mind, Medicine Lake was always "home." The most important part of her life was the love and devotion of, and for, her family.
She is survived by her four children: Grace McBride, Cascade; Donna (Arthur) Halvorson, Great Falls; Leland (Shirley) Stringer, Butte; and Bonnie (Hugo) Andersen, Cascade; 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and three step-grandchildren; her sister, Gladys Herzog and sister-in- law, Addie Grandlund, both of Medicine Lake; sisters-in-law, Hazel Snellman, Townsend, and Naomi Snellman, Butte; Charles McBride, Cascade; and numerous nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ervin in December 1980; brothers, Herbert, Ernest, Gordon, and Kenneth Snellman; sisters, Grace Snellman and Frances Stringer; and granddaughter, Jessica Halvorson.
Fulkerson Funeral Home of Plentywood has charge of arrangements.

Howard R. Johnson
PARK CITY - Howard R. Johnson, 76 of Park City, passed away Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, at Valley Health Care Center in Billings.
Howard was born June 13, 1923, at Newport, Neb., a son of Martha E. (Stevens) and Harry R. Johnson. He lived in Newport until drafted into the U.S. Army. He served during WWII in Europe where he was wounded. He was discharged November 1945. He returned to Nebraska where he met and married Evelyn M. Potratz on June 9, 1947. From this marriage a daughter, Deborah Johnson and Leslie Johnson were born.
Howard was employed in Laurel as a carman for the N. P. Railroad retiring in 1983. He served on the Park City Fire Department from 1967 to 1988 and was elected Fire Chief from 1968 to 1981. Howard enjoyed many hobbies including woodworking. Special joys in Howard's life were his five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his loving wife, Evelyn in 1996. Survivors include a brother, Cliff Johnson of Billings; a daughter, Deborah Ann Johnson of Birney; a son, Leslie (Carol) Johnson of Havre; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23, at Park City Baptist Church. Interment with military honors will be in the Park City cemetery.
Memorials: charity of one's choice. Visitation: Monday, 5-9 p.m. at Smith Funeral Chapel, Laurel. Casket will be closed at the church.

Gary D. Sherman
LAME DEER - Gary Sherman passed away Nov. 18, 1999. Wake services will be Monday, Nov. 22, 1999, 7 p.m.-12 p.m. Funeral services will be Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999, at 10 a.m. Both services will be at the Lame Deer Catholic Church.
Gary Sherman, 56, was born Aug. 24, 1943, in Tacoma, Wash., son of Otto and Letha Sherman.
Survivors include his two brothers, Conrad Sherman and Pete Sherman; one sister, Barbara Gies; three sons, Gary Jr., Eric and Eli; three daughters, Debbie, Brenda and Michelle; also four grandchildren, Brittaney, Trent, Tristan and Terrance; and many others.
Gary was in the armed services and also worked as a printer in California, ranchhand in Busby, teamster for Bechtel at Colstrip, and also an electrician for Western Energy Co. and the Northern Cheyenne Tribe.

Martha Gookin
HARDIN - Martha Gookin, 84, of Hardin went to be with her creator, Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999.
She was born May 17, 1915, in Leith, N.D., a daughter of Amelia and Gottlieb Link.
Martha married Logan C. Gookin on March 17, 1940, in Hardin. The couple made their home in Hardin and operated the Gambles Store from 1947 to 1959.
She was an avid bowler, winning many bowling awards, as well as being inducted into the Montana Bowling Hall of Fame for Superior Performance. She operated the snack bar at the Community Bowling Center for several years.
Martha had a great love for plants, flowers and children. Her flower garden won many prizes, but she was happiest giving her flowers to one and all. Her warm personality made it easy to make friends with everyone, there was no such thing as a stranger.
She was a faithful member of the Hardin Alpha Rebekah Lodge for over 40 years, serving as Noble Grand and President of the Past Noble Grands.
Martha was preceded in death by her husband and one granddaughter.
Survivors include three daughters, Charlene Steinmetz of Hardin, Shirley (Frank) Swenson and LaVonne (Bill) Frampton of Washington; four grandsons, Nicholas Steinmetz, Frank (Christi) Swenson, Donald and Brian Frampton; one granddaughter, Krisi Steinmetz; two great-grandsons, Frankie and Tony Swenson; one great-granddaughter, Jennifer Swenson; two sisters, Emma Dietz of North Dakota and Pauline Becker of Kansas; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Bullis Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the Fairview cemetery. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Erma Powell
Erma Powell left her earthly being, Nov. 19, 1999, after 90 years, to the freedom and joy of eternal life. She was very proud of her age and the fact that she could take care of herself and her own home. She taught us the meaning of strength, courage, and love.
Erma was born in Belgium on March 17, 1909, the daughter of Joseph and Amelia (Coopin) Wyttenhove. Her family emigrated to Canada when she was 3 years old and later moved to Miles City, where she attended school and helped on the family farm.
She married Thomas Neil "Mick" Powell in May of 1929. They were blessed with three children, Joe, Cliff, and Virginia. Moving to Billings in 1943, she always had a big garden and a beautiful yard with lots of flowers. She definitely had a green thumb. Erma enjoyed embroidery, latchhook rugs, and many other arts and crafts, which she gave to her family and friends. She always made her grandchildren and great-grandchildren their first Christmas stockings.
Erma and Mick liked camping and fishing and enjoyed many years of traveling after their retirement. They were married 65 years before Mick died in 1994. Erma loved her little dog, Clancy, whom was her companion and best friend. In addition to her husband, Mick, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Virginia Zieske; her grandson, Chris Powell; three brothers, four sisters, and one great-grandson.
She is survived by her two sons, Joseph (Lorraine) and Clifford (Nancy) Powell of Billings; her son-in-law, Orville Zieske of Billings; her sister, Mary Anderson of Tacoma, Wash.; her sisters-in-law, Harriet Wyttenhove of Miles City and Muriel Powell of Billings; 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 22, at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist, 1001 Alderson Ave. Memorials may be directed to the Ronald McDonald House, 1144 N. 30th, Billings, MT 59101 or the charity of one's choice.

Albert Joseph Steinberger
GILLETTE, Wyo. - Albert Joseph Steinberger, 83, died Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, at his home of natural causes.
Memorial mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23, at St. Matthew's Catholic Church with interment in Mount Pisgah cemetery. Wilson Funeral Home is in charge.

Mayme Elizabeth Domme
BUTTE - Mayme Elizabeth Domme passed away from a brief illness on Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, in a Butte hospital. She was born in Great Falls on Jan. 23, 1923, to Thomas and Eva (Latellier) Gallagher and received her education in Great Falls, graduating from St. Mary's High School in 1941. During World War II, she worked in Great Falls, Helena, Alaska and Seattle offices as a secretary prior to her marriage to George Domme on Oct. 25, 1946, and they became the parents of five sons. After the family's move to Butte from Deer Lodge, Mayme resumed her working career, which included employment at Montana Tech, School District No. 1 and her volunteer years as an active supporter of St. James Hospital Auxiliary, Our Lady of the Rockies projects and in St. John the Evangelist and St. Ann's parishes. Traveling and her cabin at Georgetown Lake were her specially loved activities, as well as many years of participation in square dance groups, but her primary interest always was in caring for her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In 1985, she donated a kidney to her son, Patrick, who suffered from lifelong diabetes, and through his associations she became an active worker in assistance to the blind and to the Diabetes Association.
Mayme was preceded in death by her beloved husband, George in 1981; her son, Patrick in July of this year; her parents; her daughter-in-law, Linda Domme; and her sister, Jo Cosgrove.
Survivors include her four sons and families: George Domme, Kalispell; John and Vonni Domme, Boise, Idaho; Thomas and Jeri Domme, Helena; Michael, Butte; brother and sister-in-law, James "Jiggs" and Trudy Gallagher, Los Banos, Calif.; nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews; her special friend, Paul Pelletier, Butte; and a wealth of friends.
Her remains are in Wayrynen-Richards Funeral Home where prayers will be recited Monday morning at 9:30, proceeding to St. Ann's Catholic Church where Liturgy of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Holy Cross cemetery. Memorials may be made to Our Lady of the Rockies, the Montana Association for the Blind or to the Diabetes Association.

Dale D. Dean
HELENA - Dale D. Dean, 70 of Helena, former Chairman of the State Tax Appeal Board during the Schwinden administration, died Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, at St. Peter's Hospital.
He was born April 10, 1929, in Harlowton, to the late Hugh and Mabel Dean. Dale graduated from Harlowton High School and later attended the University of Montana in Missoula. Later he worked for the Milwaukee Railroad. He married the former Betty Sisson in Missoula on Sept. 16, 1950.
They later returned to Harlowton where they opened a small business in 1963 and he also began the first of three terms as the Wheatland County Assessor.
Dale and his family moved to Helena in 1974 when he joined the State Department of Revenue Property Tax Division. Gov. Schwinden appointed him to the State Tax Appeal Board in 1983. Dale was later elevated to Chairman of the Board in 1987, retiring in 1989.
Dale enjoyed traveling, woodworking during his retirement years. He was an active Member Algeria Shrine Temple, and the York Rite Bodies of Lewistown. He also was a member of Musselshell Lodge No. 69 A.F. & A.M..
Survivors include his wife, Betty of Helena; daughter, Christine Baeth of Frederick, Md.; sons, Dennis of Sacramento, Calif., Robert of Santa Fe, N.M., and Mark of Missoula.
Chapel services will be Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999, 10:30 a.m. from Hagler-Anderson Chapel. Interment of cremated remains will follow at Wheatland County cemetery in Harlowton at 3:30 p.m. Family prefers memorials to Shrine Children's Hospital, c/o Algerian Shrine Temple, P.O. Box 1174, Helena, MT 59604.

Anna Miller
CODY, Wyo. - Anna Miller, 104, died Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, at the West Park Long Term Care Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23, at the Ballard Funeral Home with interment in Riverside cemetery.

Olga Roness
GLASGOW - Olga Roness, 77, died Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, at Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24, at First Lutheran Church with interment in Highland cemetery. Bell Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Betty J. Bartley
Our devoted mother and friend passed away peacefully Nov. 19 after an extended illness. She set an example of bravery to all of us who may someday have to deal with terminal illness of our own.
Betty was married at an early age to Jerry Curran and to that marriage were born her sons and survivors, Gordon of Nye, Lynn of Billings, and Dan of Billings.
She is also survived by two special adopted daughters, Rhonda Cady of Vancouver, Wash., and Lynette Alfonso of Great Falls, along with many other friends and relatives.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Jay Harris; her sisters, Shirley and Delores; and husband, Ron Bartley, who also faced a long illness.
Mom especially enjoyed giving hand-crafted gifts for the special occasions of others, and her memory will live on through her generosity.
Services will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999, at 7 p.m. at the New Apostolic Church, 500 15th St. W., of which Betty was a member. Fellowship following service in the church basement. Dahl Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Peter Brano, Sr.
LAUREL - Peter Brano, Sr. went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999. Peter was born in Vineland, Colo., on Aug. 21, 1911. He came to Laurel in January, 1929, and worked for the Northern Pacific and Burlington Northern Railroads for 48 years. He retired in 1976.
Peter married Molly Kaiser in Laurel on Sept. 17, 1932. The couple celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary on Sept. 17 of this year.
Peter loved to read his Bible. He was a charter member of Grace Bible Church where he served faithfully in several capacities for many years. His hobbies included gardening and acting as a "fix it" man.
Survivors include his wife, Molly of Laurel; a son and daughter-in-law, Pete and Elaine Brano of Billings; a daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Glenn Hannon of Spokane, Wash.; grandchildren, Michael and Kelly Brano, Christie and Jess Conitz all of Billings, Priscilla and Don Reetz and Nathaniel Hannon of Spokane, Wash., Annetta Hannon of Seattle, Wash., and Matthew Hannon, M.D. of San Diego, Calif. Great grandchildren include Kyle and Morgan Brano and Ty Conitz of Billings. There are also numerous beloved nieces and nephews. Peter is also survived by three sisters, Kay, Ann and Mary.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Mike Brano and one sister, Dorothy Polero.
Peter was greatly loved and will be missed by all who knew him.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999, at Smith Funeral Chapel in Laurel with interment in Laurel cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

William H. Burnett, Jr.
POWELL, Wyo. - Funeral services were held at First United Methodist Church at 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 19, for William H. Burnett, Jr. Mr. Burnett, 69, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 16 at his home in Powell after a long illness.
Pastors David Taylor and Roger Smith co-officiated at the services. Burial followed in Crown Hill cemetery.
Mr. Burnett was born on Feb. 14, 1930, in Drumright, Okla., to William Harrison Burnett, Sr. and Shurlda (Smith) Burnett. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. After his discharge, he married Estella Marie Dalke in Powell on May 7, 1950. The couple lived in Powell and he began a 23 year banking career with First National Bank as a teller in 1952. He later worked in real estate for the Metzler Agency. Later they owned the Park Motel in Powell for five years. In 1991, Mr. Burnett retired due to his illness.
He was active in the community as a member of Kiwanis, Powell Chamber of Commerce, Gideons and Powell Athletic Roundtable.
Survivors include his wife Estella of Powell, two sons, Gary Burnett and wife Peggy of Evanston, and Jerry Burnett and wife Ann of Aurora, Colo.; two daughters, Sharon Thompson and husband Larry of Houston, Texas, and Karon Keahey and husband Bruce of Sheridan; a sister, Opal Brewer of Powell; sister-in-laws Gertrude Burnett of California and Della Burnett of Casper, Wyo.; many nieces and nephews and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Loyd and Lee Burnett; sisters Jewel Sweet and Veta Purky and a grandson, Brian Burnett.
Pallbearers were nephews Tom Burnett, Richard Burnett, Fred Burnett, Don Tehle, Darwin Taylor and Dean Taylor. Don Voyles served as an honorary pallbearer. Ushers for the Friday service were Bob Moore and Wes Metzler. Music was provided by Tim and Billie Rae Charles of Sheridan and pianist and son-in-law Larry Thompson of Houston, Texas.
For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to the Dialysis Center at West Park Hospital, Cody, Wyo., The Gideons or the Powell Senior Citizens Center.
Miratsky-Easton Funeral Home of Powell was in charge of the arrangements.
