Myrle Teeters Franks
3/27/20 - 11/16/99
Myrle Maxine Teeters was the first child born to W. Walter and Edyth (Griffith) Teeters at Columbus on March 27, 1920. Myrle grew up on her parents' farm 12 miles north of Columbus with her younger brothers and sister, Bill, Delbert and Shirley.
She attended 1-8th grades at Hensley Creek School, spent one year boarding in Columbus and one year living in Manhattan with her uncle, Merle, and aunt, Ebba Griffith, while attending high school. In 1936 the family moved to Laurel where they owned a dairy and Myrle completed her last two years of high school, graduating in 1938. She went on to attend Business School at Billings Polytechnic Institute in 1939.
On June 8, 1940, Myrle married Jake Franks at the EUB Church Parsonage in Billings. They had five children, Jerry, Dick, Bernadine, Barbara and Juanita. They lived in the Laurel area until May 1956 when the family moved to Livingston where they farmed in both the Paradise and Shields River Valley. This move to Livingston was especially hard for her as Juanita died the week they moved and she was leaving her parents, family and close friends.
Everyone always said what a hard worker Jake was, but in all his business adventures, Myrle was quietly working behind the scenes. One cold winter when they owned the dairy, the hired man quit without notice and Jake was railroading so she milked the 80-100 cows by herself and she and Barb loaded those 100 lb. milk cans into the pickup. While owning Chico Hot Springs, she washed bedding for over 100 beds, using a wringer washer, hung them on the line to dry and took them in to iron. This was done daily, along with helping to prepare and serve three meals a day and working at the front desk checking in guests.
In June 1995 the Teeters children had a reunion and placed a sign at the top of Teeters Hill - 12 miles north of Columbus. There couldn't have been a more pleasant day. The weather was beautiful, the grass green, the sky blue, the company pleasant and the reminiscing wonderful. The event was attended by friends, family and many longtime Columbus area residents, in-cluding Myrle's first grade teacher, Alice VanCampen. Remember, Myrle was 75 years old at the time.
On Sept. 1, 1999, after finding that Myrle had cancer, she went home with Barbara to be cared for by Jerry, Elizabeth, Dick, Bernadine, Barbara, granddaughter, Robin, and the last few days by her cousin, Ruth Laipple. She loved having company and sick as she was could never get enough. Her brother Bill's many visits were very important to her. On the night of Nov. 16, 1999, at 79 years, she decided she had enough of this world and wanted to join her loved ones in Heaven.
Over the years, the things she enjoyed most were her church, family (especially those little grandkids), the Laurel coffee club, the Teeters' Cousin's Reunions, going for a walk, fishing, playing Skippo in Livingston and Monday morning coffee with Jake's sisters-in-law.
Survivors include her four children, Jerry and Elizabeth of Billings, Dick and Judy of Laurel, Bernadine and Jack Harris and Barbara Britt of Billings; her two brothers, Bill of Worden, Del of Laurel; sister, Shirley of West Linn, Ore.; 11 grandchildren, Juanita Hansen and Laurel Hutchinson of Livingston, Robin, Ron and Rick DeYoung, Greg Franks and Shawna Hoffmann of Billings, Wayne Franks of Gillette, Wyo., Robert Franks of Hinesville, Ga., Chrisdean Love of Gilbert, Ariz., and Rod Britt of Columbia Falls; 13 great-grandchildren, one adopted great-grandchild, six step-great-grandchildren and one step-great-great-grandchild.
Myrle was preceded in death by Jake; her parents; daughter, Juanita; and grandson, Tracy Franks.
Myrle was a member of Livingston's Holbrook United Methodist Church for many years until joining EUM Church in Billings. Services are planned for Saturday, Nov. 20, at 11 a.m. at EUM Church on Fourth and Broadwater, the same church where she and Jake were married . Burial in the Laurel cemetery will follow. Donations may be made to Billings Big Sky Hospice, Holbrook Methodist Church-Livingston or EUM Church-Billings.
