John H. Homberger
LEWISTOWN - A fisherman's final journey came on Oct. 27, 1999, for our beloved daddy, grandpa, great-grandpa and friend John Homberger, 89, of Lewistown.
He was born Sept. 4, 1910 in Oberhaun, Germany, the son of Karl and Elizabeth Homberger. His life in Germany was very hard and at times food was in short supply. Because of the family hardship, at age 17, speaking no English, John said goodbye to his parents, brother and sister and boarded the ship the Hamburg bound for Ellis Island. He was to join an older brother and two uncles who came over from Germany earlier. Plans were to stay here only a few years until Germany's economy improved. Those few years turned into a lifetime with only one return visit home in 1955. After meeting up with his brother, the two did various jobs such as clam digging on the Washington-Oregon coast. Years later they came to the Great Falls, Dutton, Choteau area meeting up with their uncles. While working in Choteau, he married the woman who he would spend the next 51 years with, Adele (Toots) Hodik. Knowing her only two weeks, they were married Sept. 14, 1939, in Choteau. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Great Falls where he drove taxi. In 1941 they moved to their permanent home of Lewistown. John worked for Johnson Nicholson Beer Distributors until going to work for Fergus County as a heavy equipment operator until his retirement in 1973.
John's greatest life accomplishment was receiving his United States Citizenship in 1951. To his dying day, he could still recite the Preamble of the Constitution. He joined the Moose Lodge in 1939 in Great Falls and transferred to the Lewistown Lodge in 1941. He spent most of his years for the betterment of the organization and went through all the offices of the lodge in Lewistown. He was Governor in 1963-64 and went through all the offices of the lodge in Midland Empire Legion No. 38 and was Past North Moose. He was Past President, Past Deputy Grand North Moose and Past Deputy Supreme Governor. He received the Fellowship Degree and the Pilgrim Degree of Merit. He was a member of the 100 Division of the "25" Club. He served as a Ritual Judge for many years and also served as chairman of the Stamp Fund. He was appointed chairman of the Pilgrim committee, which completed the project, started by the Loyal Order of Moose to help restore Yellowstone Park after the fire in 1988. He was responsible for sending many orphaned children to Moose Heart to further their education. He was chosen national Moose of the year in 1989 and retired from duties in 1991 after 62 years of service. He was also a lifetime member of the Eagles Lodge of Lewistown.
He was reunited after 49 years with his nephew, Hans Deitert of Cologne, Germany, in 1994 when Hans and his wife came to visit and to meet his family.
John loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing. Three days before his passing he was doing both all in the same day! On most any day you could find him out at a pond, sometimes with a pole in hand and sometimes just napping. When he wasn't fishing, you could find him telling stories and drinking coffee at the Empire CafÈ, Cookie Jar or at McDonalds.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Elizabeth of Germany; brother, Curtis, believed to have been killed in a concentration camp in Russia; and brother, Karl of Washington. In 1991 he said good-bye to his wife.
Survivors are his two daughters, Joanne (Duane) Demars of Billings and Sharyn Homberger of Lewistown; grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Sheri (Jim) Lahti, Stacey and Kelsey, Brandi Demars, Bryan (Jody) Tuss and Alex and Daquiri, Kory (Karen) Tuss and Jamie and Travis Tuss.
Funeral Services for John H. Homberger will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the Cloyd Chapel with interment to follow in the Lewistown City cemetery. The Cloyd Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Friends may make memorials to the Loyal Order of the Moose and they may be left at the Cloyd Funeral Home.
