Betty Jane Christensen Rossmeier
MEDICINE LAKE - A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday Dec. 30, 1999, for Betty Jane Christensen Rossmeier at Medicine Lake Lutheran Church. Pastor Grant Patterson will officiate and burial will be at Medicine Lake cemetery.
Betty, 72, passed away Dec. 25, 1999, at Mercy Hospital in Williston, N.D. Betty was diagnosed with ovarian cancer on Oct. 19, 1999.
Betty was born in Monowi, Neb., on March 21, 1927, the daughter of Lewie and Ada (Talbert) Christensen. She was the third of six children raised on the family farm outside Lynch, Neb. Betty attended grade school in a one-room school house outside Monowi, many times trudging those three miles through the snow and storms. Betty went on to graduate from Lynch High School. After graduation, her first job was teaching first through eighth grades in the same rural schoolhouse where she attended grade school.
Betty married Donald Rossmeier upon his return from the service in 1947. To this union was born five children: Cheryl, Donald Jr., Kenneth, Donna and Richard. Don and Betty farmed for her father for five years. Don then accepted a job with the Niobrara Valley Rural Electric Co-Op. Don's job brought the family to Wolf Point, Mont., in 1955 and then to Medicine Lake in 1958. Betty worked for the city clerk's office in Medicine Lake and then began working as a cook at the Medicine Lake School in 1967. She retired from the school job in 1987 after twenty years of faithful service. She enjoyed the school and all the kids and what a good cook!
Retirement didn't slow Betty down at all. Her meticulous record-keeping ability served her well while serving as the Medicine Lake/Homestead/Reserve Lutheran Parish treasurer and Medicine Lake Lutheran Church treasurer. She also served as the WELCA treasurer and president. She spent countless hours with her beloved quilting projects at the church. She felt a responsibility to those in need of the quilts, and was proud of each and every one completed.
Betty also was a part of a team of decorators who spruced up Main Street of Medicine Lake. She also worked tirelessly on her yard and enjoyed the results of her efforts. "A place for everything and everything in its place" was her motto and rang true in every aspect of her life. Betty enjoyed following sports, whether it be the local teams or her favorite baseball team, the Atlanta Braves. Betty's home and the homes of her children were a reflection of Betty's love and devotion to family. Each child, grandchild and great-grandchild has received a Christmas stocking beautifully cross-stitched, a quilt, an afghan, and many other cross-stitched pictures throughout the years.
Betty is survived by her children: Cheryl Deubner and her husband, Roy of Medicine Lake; Ken and his wife, Anne of Bozeman; Donna Bekkedahl and her husband, Bruce of Billings; and Rich and his wife, Bev of Fort Wayne, Ind. She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Paul and his wife Tina and their daughters Samantha and Abigayle; Tracie and her husband, Mark Prigge; David Rossmeier; Mark and Tricia Rossmeir; and Ross, Evan and Dane Bekkedahl.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Iva Dean Christensen, her brother, Gail Christensen, her son, Donald Jr., and her husband, Don, in 1989.
Mom has always been an inspiration to us. We've all considered it a privilege to be by her side the last couple of months, each of us being able to spend close moments with her. We thank God for each of these moments, for such caring friends and family, for each other, and for the many life lessons so gently passed on to us by this special person we've known as "Mom".
