Ezra Grover Rickman, Jr.
Ezra Grover Rickman, Jr. ("Grover") died at home in Billings on Dec. 22, 1999, with his wife and daughter by his side. Grover was 81. He married Harriet Schwenneker on Nov. 28, 1943. They had two children, Cathleen and Steven.
Grover was born and raised in Stillwater County near Dean, Mont., and lived there until graduating high school. Sacrificing further education to serve his country, he embarked on what eventually became a long military career-totaling over 34 years.
Grover's initial military tour began as an enlisted U.S. Army cook during WWII and ended as a commissioned pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps during the same war. Following WWII in 1945, his roles as husband, father, and co-owner of the Fishtail store occupied his time until U.S. involvement in the Korean Conflict. In 1952, Grover's Korean tour began a continuous U.S. Air Force career, filled with numerous stateside and international assignments (India, Burma, Korea, Japan, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam), during which he received many military commendations, including the Distinguished Flying Cross. Although many tours involved piloting cargo planes, bombers, and "gunships" (over 17, 000 hours in C-47s, alone), Grover also served as Commissary Officer, Club Officer, Civil Air Patrol Liaison Officer, and Base Operations Officer. Grover attained "Command Pilot" status and, late in his career, became the oldest Air Force officer in active flying status at that time. Air Force Generals often requested Grover by name for special ferrying assignments. Grover retired from the Air Force in 1970, having attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Following military service over the span of three wars (WWII, Korea and Vietnam), Grover moved with Harriet back to the old Schwenneker Ranch near Nye, Mont. to operate the ranch and dedicate much of his time, talent and money to others. Grover was a Past Master in the Stillwater Masonic Lodge with which he had been a member for over 50 years. He was also a Past Worthy Patron of the Order of Eastern Star and spent much time with Rainbow. Other organizations he affiliated with following military retirement included the Odd Fellows and the Columbus Golf Course of which he was a charter member. Grover spent a term as a Stillwater County Commissioner from 1981 to 1987.
Grover is survived by his wife, Harriet; two children, Cathy (Dennis) Hoyem and Steve (Sharon) Rickman; three sisters, Halley Coop, Bernice Beckers, and Dolly Grace Simms; one brother, Dean Rickman, and two grandchildren, Steve and Jennifer Hoyem.
