Arline A. Forister
PORTLAND, Ore. - Arline (Addie Stillman-Van Hook) Forister was born in Clyde Park, Mont., and grew up on Army bases between there and Texas, moving a dozen times before finishing high school. She met the one-true-love of her entire life, Harry Forister, in Cheyenne, Wyo., and in 1939 they were married in Baltimore. They continued to relocate every other year as his employment as flight engineer for Pan American Airways took them to Florida, Bermuda, New York, South Africa, California and the South Pacific. She was a "professional" home-maker, wife, and mother (of sons Doyle and Gary) who also witnessed and experienced the age of air travel from the original Pan American flying "Clipper Ships" to 747 jumbo jets. When abruptly widowed in 1966, she continued to dedicate herself to caring for her younger son. When he entered high school, she finally began her own college education. She graduated "cum laude" from San Francisco State University in 1972 and received her masters degree for "clothing and textile design" the following year. She taught briefly at the university before moving to be closer to her eldest son (a teacher in Billings). She worked for a couple years at Billings West High School, but was described as "too qualified" to be hired as a classroom teacher. Nevertheless she used her education and skills to design and construct her own clothing and many of her distinctive furnishings, and architected a unique home by the Rims suiting her individual lifestyle. In 1976 she relocated to Hood River, Ore., where she was employed as food coordinator for the Senior Citizen Center. Her home, modified from the one in Billings, overlooked the Columbia River Gorge. She spent 17 years designing and maintaining an oriental garden, raising berries and freezing fresh-fruit sorbet, and creating gourmet "truffle" candies from Belgian and French chocolates - all strictly for the pleasure of family and her many friends. She contributed considerable time and energy to the Christian Science churches wherever she lived, serving at various times as Sunday school teacher, librarian, board member, soloist and First Reader. In the 1980s she entered the full-time practice of Christian healing and eventually was listed in the Christian Science Journal. Her childhood memories of driving through the Columbia River Gorge were fondly recounted. So it was appropriate when she moved in 1996 to Lincoln Tower in downtown Portland where she could visibly savor "the three things I so dearly have loved since I was little girl - trees, water, and mountains." This summer, for the first time in a decade, she and her sisters, Veneda Kite of Louisville Tenn., and Myna Shoup of Charlottesville Va., all reunited with other family members in Portland. Shortly thereafter, complications from a fall prompted her to restrict visitors to immediate family - Gary and daughter-in-law Treva of Torrance, Calif., grandson Eric at UCLA, and Doyle and his companion Gary Sheldon of Portland Ore.
In lieu of services, her family invites friends to celebrate her life in remembrance and with gratitude and caring - by planting a tree or lighting a candle, by contributing to a charity or garden society or foundation, or by sharing an experience. (Family may be contacted at 2211 SW 1 Ave. No. 1204, Portland, OR 97201.)

Thelma Gray
LIVINGSTON - Thelma Gray of Livingston, formerly of the Dome Mountain Ranch, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999, at the Livingston Memorial Hospital. Cremation has taken place and memorial services are scheduled for 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 18, at the Gardiner Community Church. Rev. William Young will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of Franzen-Davis Funeral Home & Crematory.
Thelma was born on the Dome Mountain Ranch at Carbella Flats, daughter of Robert and Carrie (Flequoi) D'Ewart. She spent her entire life on the ranch. Thelma attended grade school at the Carbella School, located on the family ranch, and graduated from Park County High School. Thelma began working at the family dairy business, Park Dairy, in her mid-twenties. She met Thomas Gray in 1936 and they were married Aug. 13, 1942, in Lawton, Okla., while Tom was in the Army Air Corps. During the war, Thelma drove a dairy truck everyday down into Gardiner. It was something to see, that truck loaded with cases of milk bottles, school children from the valley perched atop them, making their way through herds of buffalo on the road. She and Tom worked the ranch and ran the dairy until 1959. Then Thelma went to work as a cook in Yellowstone National Park for two years. It was about this time that Thelma and Tom began to raise Angus beef cattle. Their ranch was one of the first ranches in the area to do so. Thelma later won a Conservation Award for building an irrigation reservoir on Sheep and Garden Creeks. That was an undertaking that she was very proud of.
Thelma greatly enjoyed raising cattle, horses and the family kids. She took a lot of pride in the abundance of wildlife that roamed the ranch. She also took great joy in collecting Indian artifacts and was an avid rock collector. Thelma will also be remembered for her love of going to local auctions. She was an enthusiastic supporter of the Gardiner Bruins sports teams. Going to the games was one of her greatest joys. She also involved herself in many other events at the school.
Survivors include her beloved husband, Tom; numerous nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made in memory of Thelma to the Gardiner Ambulance Service, Gardiner, MT 59030.
