Sandi Lux Sunsted
CULBERTSON - Sandi Sundsted passed away from heart failure on Saturday, Nov 27, 1999, in her home in Culbertson, Mont. She was 56.
She was born to Fred and Stella (Paulson) Lux on Jan. 27, 1943, in Havre. Sandi was raised in Chinook where she attended schools and graduated from Chinook High School in 1961.
She later worked in Havre and then at The First National Bank in Great Falls. Sandi married Tony Sundsted in Chinook on March 10, 1968. They lived in Shelby and Sidney before moving to Glasgow in 1981. She worked as the parish visitor for the First Lutheran Church in Glasgow and later at the Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital.
In 1996, Sandi and Tony moved to Culbertson. She was active as a volunteer at the museum in Culbertson and in many parish activities at the Trinity Lutheran Church. She enjoyed making communion bread, participating in Bible studies and taking part in her church women's circle. Earlier, Sandi taught Bible School, Sunday School and led Bible studies at Pella Lutheran Church in Sidney and the First Lutheran Church in Glasgow.
Sandi was a cancer survivor and initiated the Relay for Life in Glasgow, serving as chairperson the first year the event was held. She also led Cancer support groups in the Glasgow Community. Memorials are suggested to the Northern Rockies Cancer Center in Billings and The Lutheran Center in Billings.
Sandi enjoyed collecting antique furniture, brass, copper, pewter and Roseville pottery. She loved to attend auction sales, where she found most of her collectibles. Sandi was an avid reader and enjoyed word games. She and Tony traveled often throughout the West visiting family, attending concerts and sightseeing. Sandi took special joy in being a grandma. She enjoyed attending her grandson George's activities and was looking forward to becoming a great-grandmother to her granddaughter's, Amber, expected child.
Sandi is survived by her husband, Tony Sundsted of Culbertson; daughter, Kim Metzger and Oren of Chinook; daughter, Karna Sundsted of Los Gatos, Calif.; two grandchildren, George Metzger of Chinook and Amber Metzger of Havre; two brothers, Lee Lux of Miles City and Ron Lux of Glasgow; and one sister, Judy Howe of Craig, Colo. She was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers, Dick Lux and Lennie Lux.
Funeral services were held at The First Lutheran Church in Glasgow on Dec.2, 1999, with Pastor Alvin Beyer and Pastor Marty Mock officiating. Bell Mortuary in Glasgow handled the arrangements. Cremation will take place at a later date.

Virginia Tenge
Virginia Elizabeth Louise Miller was born March 3, 1912 in Minneapolis, Minn., the daughter of Bertha Tasche and Otto Miller. She graduated from Washburn High School, valedictorian of her class. Three years later, she graduated from the University of Minnesota, magna cum laude, with a Fine Arts Degree, majoring in Latin and Ancient History. She was a junior member of Phi Beta Kappa and was tapped for Mortar Board. As a freshman, she became a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority.
On Feb. 18, 1933, she was married to Dr. John Hynes in Minneapolis. They lived in Minneapolis for three years while Dr. Hynes completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology. In 1936, they moved with their baby daughter, Judith, to Billings, where he established his practice. He was the first obstetrician and gynecologist in this area to become a Fellow by passing the National Boards of Obstetrics-Gynecology. Virginia became active in A.A.A.W., and was a 50-year member. She served on the board of Y.W.C.A., was president of Yellowstone Valley Medical Society, a member of Chapter S, of P.E.O., served on Gov. Aronson's Committee on Institutions for several years and was a long-time member of the Community Concert Association, serving on the board.
One of her greatest joys was playing the piano and being a member of the First Piano Quartet. The foursome had weekly practice sessions and studied in earnest when they performed at benefit concerts. The quartet became honorary members of Beta Sigma Phi when their concert raised funds for one of the projects. Virginia also enjoyed accompanying vocalists, violinists and playing piano duet programs with Louise Graff.
Other interests were oil painting, drawing, hiking in the mountains, picnicking with her family, golfing at the Hilands Club, gardening and playing bridge.
She and Dr. Hynes enjoyed traveling and a great deal of walking and reading. Dr. Hynes died Feb. 22, 1982 of cancer. On Jan. 5, 1988, she was married to Mr. John Tenge, thus acquiring three daughters, Mary Rose Costello, Gretchen Rooney and Jean Jacques and their families.
Her inclusion in this loving family gave her a great deal of happiness. Virginia leaves her four children, Judith Burns and a beloved son-in-law Stuart Burns, three sons, John Dennis Hynes, Brian Emerson Hynes and Timothy Linton Hynes; four grandchildren and their spouses, Kathleen Burns Miller, Malcolm Burns, Cordelia Hynes Wilkerson, John Hynes and his wife Christine; eight great-grandchildren; four nieces and two nephews. She also leaves a special loving part of her family, John Tenge's loving family of 20 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her only sister Louise Miller Rankin and her only brother, Alan Miller, a casualty of the second World War.
Vigil services will be 7 p.m., Monday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Mortuary. Funeral Mass will be 3 p.m., Tuesday at Michelotti, Sawyers &Nordquist Mortuary due to construction at St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral. Following cremation, private interment services will take place at Holy Cross cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Billings Symphony or Rimrock Opera Company.

Kenneth George Waller
HELENA - Kenneth "Ken" George Waller, 72, formerly of Shepherd, died at his home in Hilo, Hawaii, Thursday, Nov. 25, 1999.
Services have been held.

Boyd Watts
NASHUA - Boyd Watts, 65, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, at his home.
Services will be at 11 a.m., Dec. 15, 1999, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Nashua cemetery. Bell Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Barbara Ann Bennett
HARDIN - Barbara Ann Bennett, 65, of Hardin, died suddenly from a short illness in her home, Dec. 7, 1999.
She was born to Clarence and Mabel Clark Ryan on Oct. 28, 1934, in Grass Range. She graduated from Grass Range High School in 1952 and served as valedictorian of her class. She attended Eastern Montana College and graduated on March 20, 1964, with a degree in education. Teaching was her life.
Barbara married Robert L. Bennett on Dec. 25, 1967, in Hardin, where they lived and worked for 32 years.
She is survived by her mother, Mabel Ryan of Billings; her husband, Robert of Hardin; her three children, Patricia Lotgering and her husband, Bill of Billings; Ann and her husband, Erney Edwards of Birmingham, Ala.; and Robert L. Bennett of Eugene, Ore.; one very special grandson, Ryan Lotgering; and her brother, George and his wife, Kate Ryan of Helena.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday in the Hardin First Congregational Church, with Rev. Bill Tibbs officiating. Interment will follow in the Fairview cemetery. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church of Hardin or to the charity of one's choice.

Opal Irene Brewer
POWELL, Wyo. - Opal Irene Brewer, 91, died on Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999, at the Powell Hospital.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until time of the service on Saturday. Services will be held 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11 at Miratsky-Easton Funeral Home. Interment will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Dec 13, at Crown Hill cemetery. Miratsky-Easton Funeral Home is in charge.

Mildred Elizabeth Davis
GREYBULL, Wyo. - Mildred Elizabeth Davis, 84, died at the Washakie Medical Center in Worland, on Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999, of a heart attack.
A private family interment will take place. Atwood Family Funeral Directors, Inc. is in charge.

Lester 'Friday' Dillon
POWELL, Wyo. - Lester "Friday" Dillon, 70, died at his home on Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday at First United Methodist Church. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec.11, at First United Methodist Church. Interment will follow the services in the Deaver cemetery. Miratsky-Easton Funeral Home is in charge.

Lydia Fischer
MILES CITY - Lydia Fischer, 82, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999, at the Holy Rosary Extended Care.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11, in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the family lot of the Custer County cemetery. Stevenson & sons Funeral Home of Miles City is in charge.

Frances M. Hickey
WINIFRED - Frances M. Hickey, 72, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, at the Central Montana Medical Center in Lewistown of natural causes.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 13, in the United Methodist Church in Winifred with interment to follow in the Winifred cemetery. The Cloyd Funeral Home of Lewistown is in charge.

Charles Joseph Hill
LEWISTOWN - Charles Joseph "Joe" Hill, 69, died suddenly Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999, at his home from an apparent heart attack.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11, at the Utica cemetery. Creel Funeral Home is in charge.

Margaret C. Kasner
LAUREL - Margaret C. Kasner, 91, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999, at her home.
She was a daughter of Anton and Mary Kenney, born Oct. 20, 1908, at Elba, Neb.
Survivors include her husband, Joe Kasner of Laurel; a daughter, Mary Kasner and friend, Terry Fatzinger of Park City; two sons, James and his wife, Laura of Fresno, Calif., and Joe "Maynard" and his wife, Shirley of Fresno; a sister, Matilda Ehli of Billings; two grandchildren, Michelle Kasner Goodell and husband, Kirk of Fresno, and Andy Kasner of Fresno; two stepgrandchildren, Lisa DeCesari of Tucson, Ariz., and Liz Fauntleroy of Fresno; two great-grandchildren and seven stepgreat-grandchildren.
A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10, at Smith Funeral Chapel-Laurel. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Laurel. Interment will be in St. Anthony cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Anthony Catholic Church, Laurel.

Ben W. Kostelecky
Ben W. Kostelecky, 64, passed away Dec. 8, 1999, at Deaconess Medical Center after a short battle with cancer.
He was born Nov. 4, 1935, to Joseph and Agnes Kostelecky in Dickinson, N.D. In 1959, he moved to Billings. He worked for Reporter Printing and Artcraft Printers as a printer until his retirement in June 1999.
Ben loved fishing, hunting, camping and sports, especially football. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his wife Joan (whom he married in 1981); son, Bill (Lisa) Kostelecky of Missoula; three stepchildren, Beth Johnson, Tana (Mike) Lehman, Larry (Kim) VandenBosch, all in Billings; two brothers and one sister, Laudie Kostelecky in Dickinson, N.D., Eddie Kostelecky in Missoula and Margaret Krenz in New England, N.D.; mother-in-law, Roberta Crawford; brother-in-law, Terry Crawford and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Judy and stepson Dale VandenBosch.
I have lost my best friend, my fishing buddy and a wonderful husband. Ben was loved by so many people. He was a wonderful man.
A vigil service will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12, at Smith West Chapel, 304 34th St. W. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Smith West Chapel with interment to follow at Terrace Gardens cemetery. Visitation is from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday, noon to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday.

Ellwood Meader
CASPER - Ellwood Meader, 64, formerly of Worland, died on Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999, at the home of his daughter, Kelli.
Cremation has taken place and no services are planned. Bryant Funeral Home was in charge.

Melvin E. Mettler
Melvin E. Mettler, 77, of Billings and Seattle, passed away Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, in Billings. He was born in Beulah, N.D., a son of Frederick and Olga Juliana Reede Mettler.
Survivors include two brothers, three sisters, numerous nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. Melvin was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters.
Cremation will be held. Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Cremation or Funeral Gallery, 8th Street W. and St. Johns Avenue. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. Arrangements were made by Cremation or Funeral Gallery.

Tim Newhart
COLUMBUS - Tim Newhart, 63, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 1, 1999, in Billings from complications of a stroke. Tim was born in Cody, Wyo., April 9, 1936, the son of Don and Jean Newhart.
He was raised in the mountains near Cody on the North Fork. He spent time trapping and hunting on snowshoes and horseback. His mother home-schooled him and later he attended Cody High School.
Tim was a brilliant, self-taught mechanic. He could build and fix anything. He had incredible talent and a knowledge of almost everything. He enjoyed modifying and improving the way things worked. He spent many years working for Luckinbill Construction of Columbus and doing odd jobs for his friends there.
Tim was cherished and admired by his friends. He was a kind, big-hearted, thoughtful, most gracious and unique man. When God made Tim He broke the mold.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Teddy, and father, Don Newhart. He is survived by his mother, Jean Newhart of John Day, Ore., as well as two nephews, a niece, and her two children.
He left behind many people who loved and admired him. We will miss you Tim.
Cremation has taken place, and his ashes will be scattered near Cooke City in summertime.
