Louise G. Rasmussen
ROUNDUP - Louise G. Rasmussen, member of a pioneer Montana newspaper family, died on Friday, Nov. 26, 1999, at Roundup Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
She was born in Roundup on Aug. 7, 1914, to Alfred and Rachel (Preat) Johnston Eiselein. Her father came on the first train of the Milwaukee railroad to the new town of Roundup to establish a weekly newspaper, "The Roundup Record, " in 1908, and her mother was the daughter of pioneer homesteaders in the Little Snowy Mountains between Roundup and Lewistown.
After high school in Roundup, Louise earned a degree in journalism from the University of Montana in 1937 and went to work on the newspaper until the beginning of World War II when she was employed briefly by a war industry in Los Angeles before volunteering as a WAVE, the women's branch of the U. S. Navy. Her rank upon discharge was Storekeeper First Class.
While in the WAVEs she met and married a sailor, Kenneth W. Rasmussen. After the war the couple settled briefly in Lompoc, Calif., but returned to Roundup to help out and eventually take over the "Roundup Record-Tribune." Louise became editor in 1961 and publisher after the death of her father in 1966. The newspaper, now published by her son, Eric and daughter-in-law, Mary, is the oldest family-owned newspaper in Montana.
Louise became the second woman to head the Montana Press Association, comprised of all Montana daily papers and most weeklies in 1979-80. She had previously served as president of the Montana Advertising Service as well as a member of the board of the press association. In 1991 she was awarded the Master Editor/Publisher Award by the press association.
Since 1975 she has been listed in "Who's Who of American Women." She was a past-president of the Roundup Chamber of Commerce, a member of Chapter N, PEO, and the university journalism honorary, Theta Sigma Chi.
The Rasmussens were honored with a banquet and plaque for community service in 1977, particularly for their help in raising money to reopen the community hospital. Ken died in 1986.
She was the acknowledged authority on Musselshell County history and one of the best bridge players in Roundup. A compulsive and wide-ranging reader, she sadly lost her sight to macular degeneration in her last years. Gentle and soft-spoken, she personified what, in earlier times, was called "a lady." She had lived with her son, daughter-in-law, and family for the past year.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Eric and Mary Ellen Rasmussen of Roundup; daughter and son-in-law, Polly and Gary McCauley of Seattle, Wash.; four grandchildren, Elizabeth (Al ) Gray of Roundup; Jason Rasmussen at school in Wahpeton, N. D.; Rachael Rasmussen, Murrietta, Calif.; and Kenny Rasmussen of Roundup; two great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Victoria Gray of Roundup; a sister, Betty Wetzel of Bigfork, Mont.; several nieces and nephews and many friends.

Visitation will be on Thursday, Dec. 2, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Wier Funeral Home.
