Gayle (Haggerty) Champion
SEATTLE - Gayle (Haggerty) Champion was born March 13, 1951, in Billings, the daughter of Henry and Margaret Haggerty. Gayle passed away due to natural causes on Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000.
Gayle attended Newman Elementary, Riverside Junior High and Billings West High School. After graduating in 1969, she moved to Seattle to make this her new home and pursue new careers. In 1982, she met and married Bill Champion. Gayle was a well respected mortgage broker, supplementing this career with her duties at the Boeing Credit Union.
We will always remember her for her fascination with doll houses and the efforts she put forth in her yard. She was a great story teller. We will always cherish her ability to make people laugh.
Gayle is preceded in death by her father, Henry Haggerty; her husband, Bill Champion; and nephew Kelly Prkut. Survivors include her mother, Margaret Haggerty of Billings; sisters Rose Prkut and Linda Bogart of Seattle; brother Bill (Pam) and nieces Erin, Megan and McKenzie Haggerty of Billings; nephew Nick (Diane) Prkut and children Austin and Taylor; and her nephew Kelly's wife and son, Debbie and Blaine Prkut of Seattle.
"We love you, your stories will always remain close to our hearts."
Funeral services and burial have taken place in Seattle on Tuesday, Jan. 11. Memorials can be made to the American Heart Association.

Gladys E. Cloyd
Gladys Cloyd, formerly of Laurel, was 86 years of age when she passed away in Billings at Walkers Home for the Elderly on Jan. 13, 2000. She was born on June 30, 1913, to Scotty and Barbara Edmonds in Filmore, Calif.
Gladys was raised in the oil fields in Montana and Wyoming and graduated from Cody High School. While in Cody, she was a secretary for C.B. Edmonds Trucking and a personal secretary for Paul Stock.
She married George Alfred Cloyd on Sept. 22, 1962, and moved to Laurel. She held offices in the Laurel Women's Club, Laurel Senior Citizens, and was a 50-year member and worthy matron of Cedar Chapter No. 14 of the Order of Eastern Star. She loved having her family stop in for a meal or a cup of tea and cookies.
Gladys is survived by a son, Charles Way of Lakehead, Calif.; a daughter, Barbara Weibert of Billings; a sister, Ethel Gerard of Powell, Wyo.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband and by her sister, Grace George of Roswell, N.M.
A favorite pastime was to recite poetry from her childhood. Her favorite was:
What is so rare as a day in June?
Then, if ever, come perfect days;
Then Heaven tries the earth if it be in tune,
And over it softly her warm ear lays.
At her request, cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m., Friday, Jan. 21, at the Smith Funeral Chapel in Laurel.
Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.

Glenn C. Frey
On Jan. 13, 2000, the world lost an incredible man, and Heaven gained an angel. Glenn C. Frey was born on Jan. 22, 1936, in Billings, the son of Conrad and Edith Frey.
He went to elementary school at Pioneer Progressive School, east of Broadview and graduated from Broadview High School. Upon graduation, Glenn joined the service. He married Patricia Stiles, the love of his life, on June 22, 1957, at the Our Lady Of Assumption Church, west of Broadview. Glenn was the very proud father of five children, the grandfather of six, and the great-grandfather of two. These include, James and Kim Janshen and their children, Eric, Jenni, and Ben of Portland, Texas; Jim and Claudia Frey and their daughter, Madeline of Spokane, Wash.; Jim and Jeanne Harkins and their children, Michael and Shawn of Broadview; Mark and Peg Frey of Broadview, their son, Jay and his wife, Brenda and children, Brooke and Haley of Billings; and Kristin Frey and Pod Moriarty of Broadview.
Glenn thought the world of his mother, Edith and his sister, Marjorie and her family, and his best friends, Oscar and Elsie Arneson, who played an important role in his life. He had many families that he considered part of his own which included Scott and Terri Reinhardt, Dan and Mel Arima, Paul and Polly Mirich, David Falwell, the Morton family, John and Kathy DeWitt, and countless others too numerous to mention.
Glenn farmed east of Broadview on the family farm for most his adult life. He also worked in Riverton with prisoners at the Wyoming State Honor Farm as the farm production manager. Glenn was a very important man to all of them. During the last two years, Glenn had started a tire repair service and backhoe excavation business.
He also worked part-time for the General Mills elevator in Broadview. It was at this job that Glenn lost his life in a tragic accident. Glenn will be remembered for his kindness, work ethic, honesty, and willingness to always help those people he could. We will dearly miss this wonderful man whom we loved and cherished. Glenn was an active member in the Catholic church and a Past Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus in Riverton. He was preceded in death by his father, Conrad and his sister, Alice.
The Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m., Monday, Jan. 17, at Michelotti, Sawyers and Nordquist, 1001 Alderson Ave. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 18, at St. Thomas the Apostle Church with Rite of Committal to follow in the Assumption cemetery, Broadview. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Glenn's name to the Our Lady of the Assumption Preservation Fund, c/o Stockman Bank in Billings.

Esther Gilbertson
CULBERTSON - Mrs. Esther Gilbertson, 86, passed away early Saturday morning, Jan. 15, 2000, in the Roosevelt Memorial Nursing Home in Culbertson.
Services will be held at 3 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 18, in the Ebenezer Lutheran Church. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Everson-Clayton Memorial Chapel.

Colleen Kearney
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Colleen Kearney was born April 22, 1952, in Billings and passed away on Jan. 9, 2000, in Sacramento at the age of 47 years after an extended illness.
Her loving mother, Dorothy (Nelson) Carr; sister, Laura (Nelson) Daughterty and husband, Jeff; brother, Steve Nelson and wife, Margaret; nephew, Jesse Nelson and two nieces, Isabelle Nelson and Savanna Daugherty survive her. Mrs. Kearney was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert E. Kearney in March of 1999 and her father, Frederick J. Nelson, in July of 1998.
Mrs. Kearney was employed as a contract analyst for the state of California for the past 16 years. She served as the president of the American Legion Post 392, was a past honored queen of Job's Daughters Bethel 3 in Billings, sang with the music group New Genesis in Bozeman, Mont., where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in education, and became an elementary school teacher in Lewistown, Mont., prior to moving to Sacramento in 1982.
Her family and many friends will miss her sense of humor and caring spirit.

Bill Newsome
FROMBERG - Bill Newsome, age 73, of Fromberg, passed away early Saturday morning after a battle with cancer. Bill was born in Weeksberry, Ky., on Jan. 7, 1927, to Fred and Erie Mae Newsome.
Bill moved to Ohio at an early age. He served as a paratrooper in the Army during WWII and was stationed in Germany and Japan. Bill was married at the age of 17 and has six surviving children. In 1960, he moved to Montana where he met and married June Ann Waymire. Together they have three children.
Bill worked in Yellowstone National Park for 15 years, leaving to farm full time. Bill loved to spend the day with the livestock, or in his woodworking shop. In 1986, Bill took up fiddle making, which gave him great joy. Bill will be missed greatly by family and friends alike.
He is survived by his wife, June; three sons, Roger and Steve, both of Washington, and Billie, Jr. of Fromberg; six daughters, Patricia Stepp, Rita Stephens, Susan Newsome and Melody May, all of Ohio, Lindy and Holly, both of Molt; 17 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Jack Newsome of Idaho, Don Newsome and Mack Newsome, both of Ohio and his sisters, Dorothy Ball and Esther Clark, both of Ohio.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Erie Newsome; a brother, Jimmie; infant twin daughters, and a grandson.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 18, at the Gebo cemetery in Fromberg. Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m., Monday, Jan. 17, at Smith Funeral Chapel in Laurel.

Opal A. Schraudner
Opal A. Schraudner passed away on Friday afternoon, Jan. 14, 2000, at Aspen Meadows in Billings. Mrs. Schraudner had lived for 77 years.
Opal was born in Broadview on Sept. 21, 1922, the daughter of Frederick and Zolla Davids. She graduated from the Broadview High School and continued her education at Billings Normal School. Opal went on to teach at the Champion School and later at Cushman.
On May 29, 1946, Opal married Herman Schraudner and together they moved to their ranch near Belmont to raise their family. She and Herman loved to dance and would seldom miss an opportunity to do so. Mr. Schraudner passed away on Jan. 9, 1986, and in 1989 Opal moved from the ranch to Laurel. She enjoyed her time there and quickly made new friends, sharing history and telling stories of her grandchildren. A bus trip to Jackpot, Nev., was hard to resist. Mrs. Schraudner was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and active in the C.C.W.
Survivors include two daughters, Coleen Badgett, and Cindy and husband, Mike Johnson, both of Billings; three sons, Gary and wife, Kris, of Billings, Don and wife, Sheila, of Laurel, and David of Lavina and nine grandchildren, Dana and husband, Chad, Dustin and wife, Katie, Dawson, Jordan, Annie, Jimmy, Katie, Peggy and husband, Ryan, and Molly. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents and one brother, Glee Davids.
A Vigil Service will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday evening at Smith Downtown Chapel in Billings. The Funeral Mass will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 19, at the Broadview School Gymnasium with Rite of Committal to follow at the Lavina cemetery. Smith Downtown Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Raymond Senner
BLOOMFIELD - Raymond Senner, 85, of Bloomfield, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at the Sidney Health Center.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 18, at the Community Bible Church in Glendive with Pastor Arlie Rauch officiating. Interment will be in the Dawson Memorial cemetery in Glendive. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive is entrusted with arrangements.

Delores M. Syth
WILLISTON, N.D. - Funeral services for Delores M. Syth, 73, of Williston, formerly of Fairview, Mont. will be at 10 a.m. (MST), Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at the Fulkerson Memorial Chapel in Sidney, Mont. Casket bearers are Delores's grandsons. Honorary casket bearers are all of Delores's granddaughters. Interment will be in the Lone Butte cemetery under the direction of the Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney. Visitation will be Sunday, Jan. 16, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Monday, Jan. 17, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., at the Fulkerson Funeral Home in Sidney.
Delores M. Syth was born on May 18, 1926, in Sidney (Mt. Pleasant), to parents Albert and Elizabeth (Hoephner) Kohlman. She grew up and attended school in Sidney and at the age of 14 she lost her hearing. She then attended the school for the deaf and blind in Great Falls, Mont. Delores was united in marriage to Varlock Syth in 1950 and later divorced in 1960.
Delores was a seamstress in Shelby, Mont., a housekeeper in Havre, Mont., and Sidney and worked at the Mint Cafe in Sidney. She loved to read, watch TV, sew and cook for her family. Even though she was hearing impaired, it didn't stop her from communicating and enjoying her friends, family, and grandchildren. A very special event occurred on Nov. 4, 1999. Delores and her two daughters, Judy and Jane, were baptized in Williston by Pastor Larry Quanbeck, Zion Lutheran Church of Fairview.
Delores passed away at her home in Williston on Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000.
Survivors include three sons, Brent (Linda) Kohlman, Buck (Kim) Syth, all of Fairview, and Jody Wolk of Alaska; three daughters, Judy (Syth) Elletson, Jane (Syth) Wegley, both of Williston, and Merlene (Kevin) Cherrey of Fairview; three brothers, Helmer Kohlman of Havre, Mont., Iven Kohlman of Ohio, and Bob (Grace) Kohlman of Spokane, Wash.; two sisters, Rosella Thompson of Cody, Wyo. and Betty Haslam of Seatac, Wash.; 18 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and five sisters.

Clara E. Thomas
Clara E. Thomas, 75, of Billings, passed away Friday afternoon, Jan. 14, 2000, at the Parkview Care Center.
Clara was born in Indianapolis, on Nov. 28, 1924, the daughter of Clarence and Eva White. She was raised and attended school there, moving to Montana in the early 1940s and living in Billings until the time of her death. Clara loved music, dancing and time spent wit her friends bowling and playing cards.
Survivors include two sons, Gary and Joe; a daughter, Tina; and two grandsons.
Visitation will begin Monday afternoon at the Smith Downtown Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 19, at Smith Downtown Chapel with interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Jessie M. Vevik
Jessie M. (Nelson) Vevik, 86, formerly of Livingston, passed away Saturday morning at the Valley Health Care Center of pneumonia.
She was born April 11, 1913, the daughter of William F. "Bill" Lee and Mollie Bliler Lee in Clyde Park. Premature at birth, she soon rallied, graduating from Clyde Park High School at age 15. She then went on to Montana State College, graduating in 1932 at the age of 19. She then taught school in Clyde Park and married Henry "Hank" Nelson, who died in 1950. She later married Leonard O. Vevik, who helped raise her three children. He passed away in 1975.
Jessie is survived by two sons, Richard, of Kingman, Ariz., and Barry of Cheyenne, Wyo.; one daughter, Mary Ellen (Dick) Kehler of St. Xavier; five grandsons; numerous nieces and nephews and a sister-in-law, Dolly Allan, of Laurel.
She was preceded in death by both husbands; father; mother; brother, Earl; sisters, Myrtle, Dorothy and Mary and a granddaughter, Gina.
Jessie will be cremated with interment in the Mountain View cemetery in Livingston at a later date.
The family would like to give our thanks to the staff at the Valley Health Care Center for the excellent care our mother received.

Mathias J. 'Matt' Baumgartner
LIVINGSTON - Mathias J. "Matt" Baumgartner, 82, of Livingston, died Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 12, 2000, at Livingston Health and Rehab Center. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 17, at Grace United Methodist Church at 9th and Clark Streets in Livingston with the Rev. Lyndon Kacick officiating. Cremation will follow the services. Arrangements are under the direction of Franzen-Davis Funeral Home and Crematory in Livingston.
Matt and his twin brother, Pete, were born July 29, 1917, in Richardton, N.D., sons of Mathias and Mary (Dengle) Baumgartner. When he was two years old, he moved with his family to Billings where he spent his early life and attended schools.
He then worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps for three years at Ashland. On Jan. 8, 1939, he married Ruth T. Butler in Billings. After working at a number of jobs at various locations, Matt went to work for the Northern Pacific Railroad in Glendive in 1942. In 1958, they moved to Livingston where he was employed as a machinist with the railroad. In 1961, they moved to Helena where he worked as assistant roundhouse foreman and then returned to Livingston in 1963 and continued with the same title in the Livingston railroad operation. He retired in 1977.
Following his retirement, he became involved with cabinet making and had built cabinetry and hutches for many family members and others.
Matt was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, the Glendive Elks Lodge, Livingston Saddle Club, Friday Night Dance Club and the Good Sam R.V. Club. He enjoyed traveling and loved to square dance. From 1935 to 1998 he and his wife have square danced at gatherings from Fairbanks, Alaska, to Houston, Texas, and from California to Connecticut. He enjoyed playing golf and had also actively played, managed and umpired amateur baseball and softball for 35 years and was inducted into the state Softball Hall of Fame in Lewistown in the late 1970s.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Baumgartner of Livingston; two daughters, Nancy Smith and her husband, Gary of Lincoln, Neb., and Mary Jayne Baumgartner of Houston; two sisters, Margaret Baurngartner of Helena and Anna Bradbury of Daly City, Calif.; two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Juanita Baumgartner in 1967, six brothers and one sister.
Memorials in Matt's memory may be directed to Grace United Methodist Church, 9th and Clark Streets or to the Alzheimer's Special Care Unit of Livingston Health and Rehab Center, both in Livingston, MT 59047.
