Charles R. 'Chuck' Johnson
RED LODGE - Charles R. "Chuck" Johnson, 94, of Red Lodge, formerly of Billings, died early Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, in Cedar Wood Villa. Born in Glendive on Nov. 14, 1905, he was one of eleven children born to Charles and Sophie Johnson. When he was several days old, his mother wrapped him in a buffalo robe, laid him at her feet on warmed stones in the sleigh and drove them back to the family homestead on Belle Creek.
Chuck graduated from Dawson County High School in Glendive when he was 16. He graduated from Montana Normal School in Dillon and taught in Shelby when he was 19.
He returned to college at Montana State University in Bozeman where he completed an undergraduate degree and a master's degree in botany. His experiments in plant soil deficiencies led to the manufacture of phosphate fertilizers by the Anaconda Company.
On June 11, 1931, he married Bonita Worthington in Billings.
Mr. Johnson taught at Livingston before beginning a 34-year career with the Great Western Sugar Co. He served in field and managerial positions with Great Western in Billings, Scottsbluff, Neb., Denver and Lovell, Wyo. Chuck and his wife settled in Red Lodge two years ago.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Bonita W. Johnson of Red Lodge; two daughters, Mary Ellen Mangus (Doyle) of Red Lodge, and Nancy J. Northcutt (Ray) of Leadville, Colo.; one sister, Mildred "Sis" Dalsasso (Fred) of Glendive; two brothers, Earl Johnson of Glendive, and Roy Johnson (Velma) of Mesa, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Charles R. Mangus (Lisa) of Douglas, Wyo., Christine Hamann (Jerry) of Laramie, Wyo., Marci Dye (Mike) of Red Lodge, Robin Shelton (Gregg) of Strasburg, Colo., and Eric Northcutt (Jenny) of Estes Park, Colo.; ten great-grandchildren, Jessica and Ben Mangus, Margo and Max Hamann, Eric Dye, Shelby and Brian Shelton, and Daniel, Michael and Nicholas Northcutt; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Family memorial services will be held at a later date. The Olcott Funeral Chapel of Red Lodge was in charge of cremation arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the charity of one's choice.

Betty A. Kohn
Betty A. Kohn, 79, passed away on January 7, 2000.
Betty was born to her loving parents, Atticus and Anne Sanders on Feb. 5, 1920. On March 16, 1941, Betty married Jerome M. Kohn in Wilsall, Mont. During most of her lifetime, Betty lived in Billings, and also in Washington, D.C. Having graduated from high school and from Billings Business College, Betty was well prepared to work as bookkeeper for the Saunders Lumber Co. in Billings; a clerk for the Montana Legislature; the District Tobacco and Candy Co. in Washington, D.C.; a secretary for the Jerome Kohn Co. in Billings; and for the American National Insurance Co. in Billings. Her interests included reading, music, bridge and travel.
Betty is survived by her loving husband, Jerry; her daughters, Leslie A. Clemens and Sandra L. Kohn; her son, Jay A. Kohn; as well as four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 10, at the Dahl Funeral Chapel in Billings. A private family interment will be held at the Beth Aaron cemetery. Memorials preferred to Congregation Beth Aaron, P.O. Box 187, Billings, MT 59103.

Mary V. Lewis
SIDNEY - Mary V. Lewis, 91, died on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at the Roosevelt Memorial Nursing Home in Culbertson.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 10, at the Fulkerson Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Fairview cemetery. Fulkerson Funeral Home is in charge.

Edna E. Mann
WOLF POINT - Edna E. Mann, 80, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, at Faith Lutheran Home of natural causes.
Viewing will be from noon to 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 9, at the Clayton Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the chapel. Interment will be in the Greenwood cemetery in Wolf Point. Clayton Memorial Chapel is in charge.

James F. Roberts
James F. Roberts passed away on Jan. 5, 2000, after a long struggle with cancer.
The son of James E. and Mabel (Rhine) Roberts, Jim was born July 16, 1911, in Miles City, Mont. He and his family moved to Billings in 1928 and in 1929 he graduated from Billings Senior High. He later attended the University of Montana, playing halfback for the Grizzlies during 1931-1932 seasons.
He married Helen Blackford of Lewistown on Oct. 27, 1940, and she preceded him in death in 1965.
He served in WWII from 1943 to 1946 in the South Pacific, earning the Bronze Star while in the Philippines.
After the war, Jim was employed as general agent for Penn Mutual Life Insurance Co.
Jim married Adeline Ebeling of Billings in 1967.
Jim is preceded in death by his sister, Margaret and his parents.
Survivors include Addie, his loving wife of 33 years; his brother, Richard and wife, Jan and their children, Mark (wife, Monique) and Jo Amy, of Superior, Mont.; his son, James B. Roberts of Billings; his daughter, Jane Callaway and husband, Jerry of Orlando, Fl.; two stepdaughters, LaVonne Bessler and Karen Brown, both of Billings.
Grandchildren include George Tyler Hangas and wife, Brien of Missoula, Benny Brown Jr. and fiancee, Jill Talbott of Bi11ings, Seanna Brown and Darren Bessler, both of Billings and Melinda Taylor and husband, Jason of Boston; great grandchildren include Shayla, Nathan, Samuel, Madeline, Justene and Jennika.
An avid fly fisherman, Jim was at home on the Boulder and Stillwater Rivers. He was also and excellent golfer, winning the Hilands Golf Club Championship. He was a past member of the Elks Club, Kiwanis and Hilands Golf Club.
Jim was a dad, grandpa, brother, husband and friend. And with his own special code of ethics, he lived his life with loyalty and graciousness for those he loved.
We shared history and years of wonderful memories. He was our gentleman, Jim. Take a hole in one Papa. We love you.
Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Jan. 10, at Lutheran Church of Good Shepherd. Private interment will be at 10 a.m., Monday, Jan. 10, at Mountview cemetery with military honors.
Memorials may be directed to the Big Sky Hospice, P.O. Box 35033 Billings, MT, 59107-5033. Smith Funeral Chapel has charge of arrangements.

Myrtle P. Roseberry
SUN CITY, Ariz. - Mrytle P. Roseberry, 94, of Peoria and formerly of Montana, died Jan. 6, 2000, at The Forum at Desert Harbor. She was born in Plaza, N.D., and was a retired school teacher. She moved to Arizona from Montana in 1982.
Surviving her is a nephew, Robert McDonough of California.
Services were held at Sunland Memorial Park in Sun City. Memorials may be made to Alzheimers Disease, 1028 E. McDowell, Phoenix, AZ 85006-2622.

Ray Schlenker
RAPID CITY - Ray Schlenker, 72, of Rapid City, proud and loving husband and father, went quietly to be with his Lord Thursday, Jan. 8, 2000, at his home after a short battle with cancer
He was born Oct. 4, 1927, to Christ and Emily (Schultz) Schlenker in McLaughlin.
After completing high school, Ray joined the U.S. Navy, served 3 1/2 years, then met and married Lorraine Braaten on Dec. 16, 1949.
Ray worked for 50 years in sales and service in South Dakota and Montana. A man of character and integrity, he touched everyone that knew him.
Ray was a member of the VFW, Jaycees, Masons and Shrine clown unit, enabling him to pursue his love of children and family.
He was a caring and humorous man always eager to tell a story.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine Schlenker, of Rapid City; one daughter, Rita Hopkins, and her husband, Richard, of Alfred, Maine; three sons, Charles Schlenker, and his wife, Sue, of Moore, Okla.; James Schlenker and a special friend of Rapid City; Thomas Schlenker and his fiancee, Debra Craig, of Billings; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Erma Lafrenz, Betty Hulls, both of Minnesota, Ruth Haggerty, of Montana; six brothers, Irvin Schlenker, of New Mexico, Herbert Schienker, of Oregon, Clarence Schienker, of Texas., Willard Schlenker, of Minnesota, Ronald Schlenker, of Louisiana, Harry Schlenker, of Montana; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Rueben Schlenker, Alvin Schlenker, Albert Schlenker, Gerald Schlenker.
Visitation will be Sunday, Jan. 9, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Behrens Mortuary and one hour prior to the services on Monday.
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday Jan. 10, at Behrens Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Tim Coats officiating.
Burial will be in Black Hill National cemetery near Sturgis. Military honors will be provided by the Sturgis Honor Guard.
Memorials have been established to the Shriners Hospital Travel Fund, P0 Box 7893, Rapid City, SD 57709, or Hospice of the Hills, 1011 Eleventh St., Rapid City, SD 57701.

Harvey A. Sieweke
SHERIDAN, Wyo. - Harvey Arnold Wieweke, 85, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at Sheridan Manor.
Viewing will be held at 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 10, at Kane Funeral Home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 11, at Kane Funeral Home. The Elks Lodge Memorial service will be given. Cremation will follow, with interment at a later date. A reception will follow at the Elks.

Leona M. Truex
LIVINGSTON - Leona M. Truex, 76, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at her home.
Visitation will be at Franzen-Davis Funeral Home, 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 9, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 10, until service time Tuesday, Jan. 11 at the church. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, at Holbrook United Methodist Church, corner or 5th and Lewis streets in Livingston. Franzen-Davis Funeral Home is in charge.

Douglas E. Wagner
GLENDIVE - Douglas E. Wagner, age 73, of Glendive, died on Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at the Glendive Med-ical Center.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, at the Chapel of the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Glendive. Interment was in the Dawson County cemetery. Silvemale-Silba Funeral Home was entrusted with arrangements.
Douglas was born on Sept. 20, 1926, in Minneapolis, the son of Edward C. and Martha A.(Sabatke) Wagner. He was raised and educated in Menomonie, Wis., where he graduated from high school in 1944. Afer graduation, Doug entered the U.S. Navy. Following his discharge, he attended the University of Wisconsin at Stout. After his college education, Doug moved to Glendive in 1948. He married Ruth Luke on April 29, 1978, in Las Vegas, Nev. They made their home in Glendive where Doug was a mechanical contractor - owning and operating Wagner Heating and Plumbing until he retired in 1990.
Doug enjoyed fishing, hunting and being outdoors. He was a member of the Glendive Elks Lodge, VFW and the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth, of Glendive; two sons, Doug Wagner of Missoula and Craig Wagner of Glendive; one daughter, Julie Lewis of Reno, Nev.; two sisters, Kathi Cleaveland and Nancy Persian, both of Minneapolis; two grandchildren, Jess and Jana Wagner, both of Glendive.

Helen Elizabeth Pfeifer Brock
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Helen Elizabeth Pfeifer Brock passed away at the age of 83, Jan. 5, 2000, in Las Vegas, after a brief hospitalization.
She was born Aug. 8, 1916, in Douglas, Wyo., to Andrew and Anna Pfeifer. Helen grew up and attended school in Douglas. Her first marriage was to Byron Simonson and to this union a daughter, Donna, was born. She later married Roy Amick; a second daughter, Barbara, was born. Helen was later married to Charles William (Bill) Brock. The couple ranched in the Douglas area. A third daughter, Joyce, was born.
Helen and Bill later moved to Billings and finally to Nevada, where Bill died in 1985. She then lived with her daughter, Donna, in Las Vegas until the time of her death.
"Our mother will be remembered as a gentle, generous spirit whose capacity to both enjoy and endure life remains a gift to those who knew her."
She is survived by her sister, Emma Williams, of Douglas; her three daughters, Donna Simonson of Las Vegas; Barbara Heinz of Lancaster, Calif.; Joyce Lee of Billings; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place in Las Vegas; memorial services will be held in Douglas in the spring.

Henry Bugbee
MISSOULA - Henry Bugbee, 84, formerly of Billings, died on Saturday, Dec 18, 1999.
A memorial service will be held at the President's Room in Brantly Hall, the University of Montana, Connell Avenue, at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8.

Emold Palmer Christianson
Emold Palmer "Chris" Christianson passed away Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, at Billings Deaconess Hospital, at the age of 86.
Chris was born in Almont, N.D., on July 17, 1913, to Polly and Edward M. Christianson. The fourth of seven children, he was raised on the family farm and attended schools in Almont. Most of his working years were spent employed as a lineman for Burlington Northern Railroad. During this time he and his family resided in Glendive, Missoula and Livingston, where he retired in 1975. Chris and Audrey moved to Billings in 1998.
Chris married Audrey Cady Wilkinson Feb. 3, 1945, in Glendive. Chris and Audrey raised three sons: Karl Wilkinson (Peroja), Fen Wilkinson (Marge) and Loren Christianson (Paulette). Their family includes 16 grandchildren 10 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Chris is also survived by a sister, Vivian in Mandan, N.D.
Chris was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Monad Ward). He enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing with his family. Chris also enjoyed attending sporting events with his family and spent many hours following the various activities that were coached or participated in by his children and grandchildren. He was also a 55-year member of Elks Lodge 240.
Chris was a loving, caring, husband, father and grandfather. He was always a strong example of righteousness to his family and will be missed greatly.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Chapel on Sixth Street West and Avenue D with Bishop Alan Homer of the Monad Ward conducting.
