Michio 'Mitch' Sato
BASIN, Wyo. - Michio "Mitch" Harvey Sato, 83, died at the Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital in Thermopolis on Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000.
Visitations will be 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26, at first Baptist Church in Basin. Graveside services with military honors will be held at Mount View cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been set up at Security State Bank in Basin. Proceeds will go to the First Baptist Church in Basin. Atwood Family Funeral Directors Inc. is in charge.

Alec Miller
Alec Miller, 88, of Billings and formerly of Laurel, passed away Tuesday Feb. 22 ,2000, at St. Vincent's Hospital after an apparent stroke. He was born in Odessa, Russia, on March 7, 1911, the son of George and Katherine Reichert Miller. He came to the U.S .with his parents in 1913 and settled in Nebraska and later moved to Montana where they settled in the Laurel area.
He married Amelia Mill on Dec. 29, 1933. He worked on many farms, later worked for the railroad and as a pipefitter for a Billings refinery. Alec always loved his family and many friends and enjoyed his dog.
Survivors include five sons, Ken (Rita) Miller of Rexford, Ron (Virginia) Miller of Billings, Ted (Yvonne) Miller of Jamestown, N.D., Harvey (Rita) Miller of Billings and Robert (Helen) Miller of Billings; two daughters, Merry (John) Constanza of Billings and Bonnie (Ben) Montez of La Puente, Calif.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Alec was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Amelia, a daughter Shirley, a son Reinholt and six brothers.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Gallery, 8 St. W. & St. Johns. Interment will follow at the Laurel cemetery. A gathering of relatives and friends will follow at Charlie Brown's Back 4-T. Arrangements were made by Cremation or Funeral Gallery.

Earl Weeks Whitney
MILES CITY - Earl Weeks Whitney, 79, formerly of Ekalaka, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at the Holy Rosary Health Care Center.
Masonic funeral services will be conducted by the Ekalaka and the Miles City Masonic Lodges at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26, in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow in the Custer County cemetery with full military rites. Stevenson & sons funeral Home of Miles City is in charge.

Robert A. Roe
Robert A. Roe, 50, of Billings, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at St. Vincent's Hospital from complications with cancer.
Bob was born Nov. 11, 1949, in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Harold M. and Charlotte (Kepple) Roe. He was raised in Iowa, North Dakota, and in Helena before coming to Billings in 1953. He graduated from Billings Senior High School in 1968 and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam war. During school, Bob worked part-time at Sunset Memorial Gardens cemetery and Billings Monument Co.
Bob made many a friend while bartending at the Hangin' Tree, the Drifters, and Brandy's. In 1987, Bob became his own boss by purchasing the Billings Monument Co.
Bob loved the outdoors, animals, and everything about nature. He was an avid hunter, loved to fish, camp, hike, or just go for walks around his home in the Bull Mountains.
Survivors include his wife, Jane; his mother, Charlotte Roe Neaveill of Naples, Fla.; the Geering family and several nieces, nephews, and distant relatives. Bob was preceded in death by his father, Harold Roe, his sister, Vicky, and his brother, Stephen.
Please join us for memorial services 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 25 at Smith West Chapel. Cremation has taken place. Interment will be at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Bull Mountain volunteer fire dept.

Albina 'Alvina' Hochhalter Meyer
HARDIN - Albina "Alvina" Hochhalter Meyer, 88, of Hardin, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 23,2000, in the Big Horn County Memorial Nursing Home.
She was born March 19, 1911, in Leith, N.D., a daughter of Fredrich and Emelia Hochhalter. She grew up and attended schools in Leith. In 1937, she moved to Hardin, leaving in 1948 for Butte, and she returned to Hardin in 1975.
Alvina was a homemaker who enjoyed crafts and crocheting. She also loved fishing and working in her garden. Along with these hobbies, Alvina enjoyed spending time with her many grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Rainey and Leonard Lucero; two brothers and four sisters.
Survivors include six sons, Clair (Mary) Dietz of Missouri; Melvin (Joan) Dietz of Colorado; Robert Dietz of Butte; Kenneth (Cathy) Lucero and Donald (Sandy) Lucero of Butte; Clarence Lucero of Hardin; three daughters, Darlene Durney of Billings; Shirley York of Columbus; and Diana Freeman of Hardin; two brothers, Henry Hochhalter of Hardin; and Edward (Clara) Hochhalter of Washington; two sisters, Lydia Fried of Hardin; and Eva Hilluis of North Dakota; 32 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, in the Bullis Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the Fairview cemetery. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Alma Thomas Hertel
HUNTLEY - Alma Thomas Hertel, 90, of Huntley, died Tuesday evening at her home of natural causes. She was born Nov. 28, 1909, in Friend, Neb., the daughter of George and Amelia (Bott) Bender. She moved to Sumatra, Mont., in 1914 with family. She received her schooling in Sumatra and then attended Western Montana College at Dillon for two years receiving her teaching certificate. She returned to Sumatra and taught in country schools.
On Dec. 1, 1933, she was united in marriage to Clyde H. Thomas in Lewistown. They lived and ranched south of Moore until 1971 when they moved to Billings. He died in 1973 and she continued to live in Billings. In 1981, she was united in marriage to Max Hertel in Moore, and they lived at Moore until his death in 1989. She moved back to Billings where she lived until 1999 when she moved to Huntley.
Alma loved to dance and playing cards.
She is survived by two sons, Don Thomas and his wife, Barbara of Scobey, Mont., and Verland Thomas and his wife, Erlyene of Huntley; two daughters, Patricia Burger and her husband, Orville and Sharon Drake and her husband, Gary all of Billings; two brothers, Albert Bender of Miles City, and George Bender of Mountain Home, Alaska; 14 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Vivian, who died at the age of 1, one brother, William and her parents.
Graveside services for Alma Thomas Hertel will be Friday at 1p.m. in Central Montana Memorial Gardens of Lewistown. The Cloyd Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Friends may make memorials to Big Sky Hospice at 123 South 27th St., Billings, MT 59101 or they may be left at the Cloyd Funeral Home.

Rosie Schlecht Leone
LITTLETON, Colo. - Devoted and loving wife, mother, and grandmother, Rosie Schlecht Leone, 59 of Littleton, formerly of Billings, died Saturday night, Feb. 19, 2000 at Porter Hospice in Littleton. The youngest of eight children of William and Lydia Schlecht, Rosie was born in Hamilton before moving to Billings.
She married Lon S. Leone, also formerly of Billings, in Nov. of 1958. In 1965, Rosie and her family relocated to Colorado.
She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Lon S. of Littleton; her daughter, Mrs. Karrie Leone Kelly of New Jersey; her son, Jefferey A. of Denver; her grandson, Maximilian (son of Karrie and Jeff Kelly); her sisters, Mrs. Lydia Kehrwald of Billings and Mrs. Norma Sexton of Mesa, Ariz.; and her brothers, John Schlecht of Florence, Leo Schlecht of Billings, and Clarence and Billy Schlecht, both of Great Falls, Mont.
Visitation with the family present will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist, 1001 Alderson Ave., Billings. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, at Trinity Lutheran Church with interment in Holy Cross cemetery. The casket will be closed at church. Memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church, 537 Grand Ave., Billings, MT 59101 or the charity of one's choice.

Robert Baker
MILES CITY - Robert Baker, age 78, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, at the Holy Rosary Extended Care in Miles City.
Robert Baker was born in Harrisburg, Penn., on May 29, 1921, the son of Riley and Margaret (Banford)) Baker, and moved to Montana with his family a few years later. The oldest of six children, he grew up in Miles City. He joined the Army on June 17, 1939, and became an expert machine gunner. He was wounded in action as the result of a flash explosion when the U.S. Bliss was torpedoed off the coast of Casablanca, Africa, on Nov. 10, 1942. He was sent to Moore General Hospital in Swannanoa, N.C., and was discharged from there on June 2, 1943. He was one of the first soldiers to return to Miles City after being wounded in action. He was awarded the Purple Heart on Dec. 3, 1942.
Robert worked for the Milwaukee Railroad for a short time but his injuries would not allow him to continue.
Robert was an avid fisherman and delighted in taking his son, nephews, grandchildren and the boys of his friends out to learn to fish. He loved to cook and owned and operated the "Coffee Cup" Cafe on Main Street for a number of years. His family always came home for dad's or grandpa's cooking. He sent buckets of frozen goulash all over the country wherever one of them happen to be.
He and June Babcock were married on March 5, 1944. They had one son, Lynn, who is an attorney in Great Falls; three grandchildren: Channing Baker of Missoula; Chanelle Te'Te' Mazzacano of Bellingham, Wash.; and Cory Baker of U.S. Navy in Spain; and four great grandchildren: Kali, Alex, Tyler and Brittney Baker, all of Missoula.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home with Rev. Sherwood McKay officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot in the Custer County cemetery. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Miles City is in charge of arrangements.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church in Miles City.

Ann E. Kohlman
Ann B. Kohlman, 75, of Billings, passed away Sunday evening, Feb. 20, 2000, at Deaconess Medical Center following a heart attack.
Ann was born to Lars and Lillian (Hansen) Ofstad on Jan. 21, 1925, in Rapid City, S., the second born of three daughters. After high school and during the war years, she attended college for two years at the South Dakota School of Mines. During this time, she sang with a swing band which performed at dances and had a local radio show.
After World War II, from 1946 to 1949, she worked as a flight attendant for Western Airlines before marrying her lifelong mate, Paul C. Kohlman on June 5, 1949. Early in their marriage, they relocated frequently due to Paul's work assignments before settling in Billings in 1957. This past summer, Ann and Paul marked their 50th wedding anniversary with a wonderful week-long family celebration in Colorado.
Ann was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker. We relied on her strength of spirit, love, warmth, and intuitive guidance. In Billings, she was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, GEO Wives, and the Petroleum Club, among others. She was preceded in death by her parents and one adult son, Scott Kohlman.
Survivors include her husband, Paul C. Kohlman of Billings; her three daughters, Valerie J. Kohlman and her husband, Grahame Atkinson of Longmont, Colo., Nancy K. Holl and her husband, Kevin of Grand Junction, Colo., and Darcy A. Ermatinger and her husband, Dan of Missoula; her son, Rex L. Kohlman of Billings; her sisters, Marie Ethier of Fayetteville, N.C., and Bertha May Lyon and her husband, Don of Muncie, Ind.; her grandchildren, Daniel and Erin Holl of Grand Junction and Katy Ann and Lochlin Ermatinger of Missoula; her brothers-in-law, Dale W. Kohlman of Bay St. Louis, Miss., and Dean K. Kohlman and his wife, Barbara of Huron, S.D.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ann will be deeply missed, and we will carry her love and wisdom with us everyday for the rest of our lives.
Funeral services will be held 11 am. Friday, Feb. 25, at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd with interment in Mountview cemetery. Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist has charge of arrangements,

Leonora Strum
SENTINEL BUTTE, N.D. - Leonora Strum, 78 died at Wibaux, Mont., on Monday, Feb. 21, 2000.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, at St. Pauls's Lutheran Church in Beach, N.D. Interment will follow at the Lutheran cemetery in Beach. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Beach is in charge.

Evelyn I. Grosfield
BIG TIMBER - Evelyn I. Grosfield, 84, passed away peacefully of natural causes Monday in the Pioneer Medical Center in Big Timber.
She was born in Sioux City, Iowa, on April 16, 1915, the daughter of Lorents A. and Anna Brendsel Finsvik. She graduated in 1933 from Sioux City Central High, where she was a member of the National Honor Society.
On Nov. 14, 1942, in Sioux City, she was married to Louis Grosfield of Big Timber. They ranched for many years northwest of Big Timber on Swamp Creek, later moving to the north end of the ranch on Big Timber Creek.
Evelyn was very involved in the Lutheran Church, where she was active in the Ladies Aid and the youth programs, both in Big Timber and in Santa Barbara, Calif., where they spent several years, beginning in 1957. Later she enjoyed being hostess to friends and family at their new ranch home on Big Timber Creek, in the shadow of the Crazy Mountains. She always loved literature, music, traveling, and playing bridge. She especially loved children and was a devoted mother and grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her siblings, Mildred Rostad and Palmer Finsvik of Big Timber, Gordon and infant sister Lucille of Sioux City, and cousin Pearl Davis of Visalia, Calf., who also grew up in the Finsvik home. She is survived by her husband, Louis, of Big Timber; son Lorents and his wife Sydney and three grandsons Nikolas and Zachary of Big Timber, and Arik and his wife, Rachel, of Detroit; daughter Eline Knudson and two granddaughters Karla and her husband Jeff Wiegrefe, and Kristin, all of Minot, N.D.; daughter Ivanie Nelson and her husband David of Billings; daughter Allison Grosfield of Seattle; four great grandsons; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at Friday, Feb. 25, at 2 p.m. at the Big Timber Lutheran Church, with burial to follow in Mountain View cemetery. Lowry Funeral Home of Big Timber is in charge of arrangements.
The family suggests memorials be sent to the Alzheimer Association, the Pioneer Medical Center Assisted Living Project, or the Big Timber Lutheran Church.

Richard 'Dick' Holle
BLACK HAWK, S.D. - Richard "Dick" Holle, 63, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, at Fort Meade VA Medical Center, after a lengthy illness.
Visitation will be Thursday, Feb. 24, from 4-7 p.m. at Campbell, Paula and Quinn Funeral Chapel and at the church one hour prior to service time. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, at Black Hawk Community Church. Pastor Allen Bates will be officiating. Burial will be in the Black Hills National cemetery in Sturgis. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association.

Jane A. Wanner
Jane A. Wanner, 59, of Billings, passed away Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, at the Deaconess Hospital after a long illness.
She was born Jan. 20, 1941, in Tappen, N.D., the daughter of Christian and Irene Kranzler Wanner Jr. They came to the Billings area when she was six weeks old and lived with her parents until Aug. 8, 1948. She went to Boulder until 1971 then returned to Billings and resided in several foster homes. She later lived with her foster mother, Sarah Tipps, now Sarah Lutsch, until 1983 when her mother took over Jane's care.
In 1997 she was under very excellent care at Parkview Convalescent Center until she entered the hospital. They had many good times together, and Jane had many hobbies which included latch hook, embroidery, puzzles and plastic canvas. Jane loved bowling, swimming and was so proud of having swum the full length of Eagle Cliff Pool at RMC. Jane received many bowling trophies and always properly displayed them in her home.
Survivors include her loving mother, Irene Olsen; sister, Sandra Cannon of Spokane; two brothers, Kenneth (Diane) of Princeton, B.C., and Gary of Salt Lake City; eight uncles; seven aunts; many nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, Donald O'Banion of Kingman, Ariz.; foster mother, Sarah Lutsch; and dear friends, the Owens family and Norman and Monica Nelson of Chilawack, B.C. She was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Mr.and Mrs. Chris Wanner Sr., and maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Kranzler; father, Chris Wanner Jr.; and two sisters, Rosemary Wanner and Diana O'Banion..
Memorial will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at Jehovah's Witnesses Kingdom Hall, 201 Wicks Lane. Memorials may be made to Yellowstone Association for Retarded Citizens, 602 18th St. W., Billings, MT 59102. Arrangements were made by Cremation or Funeral Gallery.

Marie C. Pollard
LEWISTOWN - Marie C. Pollard, 88, of Lewistown, the last of nine Larson children and loved by all who know her, passed away on Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, in the Central Montana Skilled Nursing Center of natural causes.
She was born June 13, 1911, in Lewistown, the daughter of Peter and Inga Maria (Cjerholm) Larson. She grew up at Armells at Fergus receiving her schooling at the Horse Ranch and Nob Hill Schools. She went to Fergus High School, working for her room and board for Dr. and Mrs. Wilder. She only went through her sophomore year, quitting to stay home to help her mother who was sick.
On May 9, 1932, she was united in marriage to Olge Pollard in Winnett. To that union five children were born. Marie went to nursing school at St. Joseph School of Practical Nursing in her later years, graduating in 1959. She worked as a LPN at St. Joseph Hospital and made the move to the new Central Montana Medical Center working in the skilled nursing center. She dearly loved working with the elderly and thought the world of her fellow employees, who affectionately called her "Polly" and they still did. The last six years of her life were spent at the Skilled Nursing Center. The loving care and kindness of the staff was greatly appreciated by her family.
She enjoyed embroidering, crocheting, working crossword puzzles and loved playing the dice game 6-5-4 at family gatherings.
Marie is survived by her four daughters: Joyce Pospicil of Lewistown, Eileen Econom of Winifred, Sandy Styer and husband, Bill of Winnemucca, Nev., and Carol McGrail and husband, Ron of Billings; 15 grandchildren: Debbie Thompson, Clint Trask, Eva Kuykendal, Teri Zier, Becky Mockling, Nick Econom, Chris Schmitt, Mark Styer, Chip Styor, Jackie Grimsrud, Ken Paharik, Thad McGrail, Ronda Jensen, Carol Meena and Donna Schonberger; 35 great-grandchildren and many much loved nieces and nephews. Marie was preceded in death by her husband, one son, Roger; a great-grandson, Luke Schonberger; her son-in-law, George Econom; her parents, four brothers: Art, Percy, Lawrence, and Oscar Larson; four sisters: Ellen Campell, Ruth Rabe, Dora Olden and her special sister, Ebba Rood.
Funeral services for Marie C. Pollard will be Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Cloyd Chapel with interment to follow in the Lewistown City cemetery. The Cloyd Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Friends may make memorials to the Central Montana Skilled Nursing Center or the charity of their choice and they may be left at the Cloyd Funeral Home.
Mom loved life and people like no one else we knew, but most importantly was her love for her family, and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mom, we love you and will miss you so very much.
