Mervin Leroy Rost
Mervin Leroy Rost, 72, of Baker, formerly of the Ismay area, passed away on Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, at the Billings Deaconess Hospital. He was born on Feb. 11, 1928, the son of Norman and Bertha Carter Rost 31/4 miles south of Ollie on his grandfather's homestead.
He attended the Ollie Country School. Mervin enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Jan. 26, 1946, and served until May of 1947. He returned to Montana and was married in 1954. Mervin worked at the K. Bark Ranch near Avon, Mont., the Froze to Death Grazing District and the Benny Binion Ranch, as well as various others. He was divorced in 1963. He remarried in 1968 and moved to Alaska where he worked in hunting camps as a horse wrangler, packer and guide.
Upon returning to Montana, he purchased the Locate Property at the Powder River. He sold this place in 1995 and moved to the Boulware Ranch, which he managed until 1998 when he moved into Baker due to failing health.
Mervin was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles in Miles City, an honorary member of the Montana Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association, past member of the MRCA and a member of the Range Riders Inc. of Miles City. Mervin enjoyed working with livestock, especially breaking horses. He also enjoyed hunting and had a deep love and bond for his dogs, the English shepherd. His last six years were shared with a very special friend, Audrey
Survivors include: his special friend, Audrey of Baker; three sisters, Rosie Norman and her husband, Tom of Livingston, Alice Bandy and her husband, Vern of Bozeman, and Reva Schye and her husband, Gary of Miles City.
His parents; a brother, M.R. "Tubby" Rost and a sister, Irene Smelcer, preceded him in death.
Funeral Service were held on Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 10 a.m. in the Stevenson's Funeral Home in Baker with Frances Madler officiating.

Raymon O. Sonsteng
LUSTRE - Raymon O. Sonsteng, 69, died Feb. 16, 2000, at Faith Lutheran Home in Wolf Point due to complications of cancer.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, at Clayton Memorial Chapel in Wolf Point. Cremation has taken place.

William H. Zier
MALTA - William H. Zier, 68, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, at the Deaconess Hospital in Billings following a heart attack.
Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Adams Memorial Chapel in Malta. Cremation has taken place.

Alice D. Anspaugh
BUFFALO, Wyo. - Alice D. Anspaugh, 99, died Wednesday, Feb. 16, in her home following a lingering illness.
Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday and from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Monday. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 21, in the United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Willow Grove cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Buffalo, or the Chapel fund of Circle J Ranch in Tensleep, in care of Adams Funeral Home.

Vernon Ross Ballard
LAVINA - Vernon Ross Ballard, 72, of Lavina, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, at the Deaconess Medical Center.
Vernon was born Dec. 15, 1927, in Billings, the son of Ross and Essie (Perrine) Ballard. His parents homesteaded at Commanche, and he attended grade school at Pleasant Valley School, nine miles west of Acton. He graduated from Broadview High School in 1945. Vern enlisted in the First Marine Air Wing in 1946-1947. In 1948, he rented a farm from Mrs. Cole and worked that until he was called back into service with the Marines for the Korean Conflict.
Vern married Bernice Morton December 1952 and they had three daughters and one son. He farmed and also worked at the sugar factory in Billings until the spring of 1958 when they bought a ranch east of Lavina. They divorced in December of 1963. Vernon married Emma Day in March of 1968.
Vern was happy to achieve the goals he had set for himself. Of his goals, his cattle ranch was his pride and joy.
Vern joined the Masonic Lodge in 1954 and has been a member since. He has been a member of the Montana Stockgrowers for 40 years and a Golden Valley County commissioner for 12 years.
Vern enjoyed riding his horse through the pine-covered hills of his ranch.
Survivors include his wife, Emma of the family ranch; four children, Susan Brabec of Miles City, Patty Gardner of Great Falls, Janet Ballard of Billings, Jim (Adele) Ballard of Lavina and Linda (Bill) Jones of Broadview; grandchildren, Michelle (Wayne) Fischer, Jolene (Tony) DeRosa, Jackie Dees, Mathew Gardner, Nicole Gardner, Larry (Kelli) Gardener, Jennifer (Gary) Grams, Kristie and Joseph Brabec, Toby Sims, Raina Sims, Alan and Ross Ballard, Stacy Jones, Carla and Travis Jones; three great-grandchildren, Kristopher Schaff , Ashlynn Harris and Nolan Dees; two brothers, Delbert (Virginia) Ballard of Richland, Wash., and Floyd (Kay) Ballard of Hardin; one sister, Thelma Vansky of Billings and one sister-in-law, Louise Ballard of Huntington Park, Calif.; numerous nieces and nephews.
Vern was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Howard.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Smith West Chapel. Visitation will begin Friday morning at 9 a.m. at the Chapel. Interment will be at the Lavina cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Lavina or Broadview Senior Centers or the Lavina Temple 101, or the charity of choice.

Sophie Clark
SPOKANE, Wash. - Sophie Clark passed away Feb. 15 in Spokane. Funeral services will be held at St. Mathias church of Ryegate, Mont., on Monday, Feb. 21, at 11 a.m. Visitation will be Sunday, Feb. 20, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Wier Funeral Chapel in Roundup. She was preceded in death by Waldo R. Clark, her loving husband of 42 years. Waldo and Sophie resided in Ryegate for 30 years, raising a family and farming, and she was employed as agent/operator for the Milwaukee Railroad part time for 37 years. Her dedication to her family will be remembered and cherished by her four children, Dennis Clark of Spokane, Gary Clark of Belgrade., Mont., Rodney Clark of Dillon, Mont., and Judy Pettersen of Kalispell, Mont. Her surviving sisters include Mary Olson of St. Cloud, Minn., Rose Youngbauer of Forsyth, Mont., Arlene Parker and Gen Drennen of Miles City, Mont.

Monica Ebert
MILES CITY - Monica Ebert, 94, died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, at the Holy Rosary Extended Care.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 21, in the Holy Rosary Health Center Chapel. Interment will follow in the family lot in the Custer County cemetery. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Miles City is in charge.

Elizabeth Fried
JAMESTOWN, N.D. - Elizabeth Fried, 85, died at the Hi-Acre Manor on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000.
Elizabeth is the mother of Evonne Cysewski and Mary Jo Miller, both of Billings.
Prayer service was held Tuesday evening at Lisko Funeral Chapel in Jamestown. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 16, at the Basilica of St. James. Interment was at Calvary cemetery. Memorial may be made to the FACE Foundation.

Jane G. Gerry
Feb. 16, 1927 - Feb. 4, 2000
LEBANON, Ore. - Jane G. Gerry, 72, of Lebanon, died Friday at Corvallis Manor.
She was born in Fargo, N.D., the daughter of Clarence and Hildegard (Kamphaug) Gransberg. As a child she moved to Billings and graduated from Billings High School in 1944.
She married Ben Gerry on Aug. 22, 1947, in Billings. In 1957 they moved to Lebanon, and she worked for several years as a part-time dental assistant.
In 1973, she helped her husband establish a Lebanon insurance agency. She was the agency bookkeeper until her 1990 retirement.
Mrs. Gerry was a longtime member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church. She was proud of her Norwegian heritage.
She belonged to three bridge clubs, was an enthusiastic golfer, and particularly enjoyed golfing with members of the women's club at Pineway Golf Course. She also liked knitting and made beautiful afghans for her children-and grandchildren.
Surviving are husband Ben; daughters Nanette Pons of Cascadia and Lynn Tallman of Santa Rosa, Calif.; brothers C.O. Gransberg of Billings and Dudleigh Gransberg of Helena, Mont.; sister Marlene Gransberg of Billings; and grandchildren Jesse Pons of Seattle, Sparrow Tallman of Santa Cruz, Calif., and Amanda Tallman of Santa Rosa.
Services have been held in Lebanon. Contributions in her name may be made to the Lebanon Community Hospital Foundation. Huston-Jost Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Lloyd R. Lane
Rev. Lloyd R. Lane passed away Wednesday, Feb 16, 2000, at the Western Manor Health Care Center.
Lloyd Russell was born in Rosebloom, Miss., on Nov. 13, 1913, and was educated in Rosebloom and Paynes schools. On June 18, 1932, he and Maisie Newsom were married and their union was blessed by the birth of one son, Frank, on Feb 6, 1940.
Lloyd dedicated his life to the Lord in 1935 and was sent forth as an evangelist in the Church of God of Prophecy in 1936. He served various congregations as a pastor in Mississippi until 1945 when he answered the call to pastor in Montana. He pastored in Baker, Butte, and Billings until he moved to Hardin in 1951 to become a missionary to the Crow people. In 1948, he was ordained a bishop. In 1958, he was appointed state overseer of Montana and moved to Billings. He subsequently served as the state overseer of Nevada, Wyoming and North Dakota until his retirement in 1974 because of being diabetic.
Lloyd and Maisie moved into their much loved and paid for little home on Nelson Drive in Billings. He and Maisie enjoyed a wonderful life of retirement until ill health mandated a move to Western Manor on Dec. 30, 1999.
Rev. Lane is survived by his beloved bride of 67 years, Maisie; son, Frank (Pearl) Lane of Miles City; granddaughter, Pamela (Doug) Colombik of Miles City; and his much loved great-grandson Lane Lee Colombik; two foster grandchildren, John and CeCe Luong of Denver and four foster great-grandchildren.
Rev. Lane was preceded in death by his brothers William, Knott, Claude, Brewer, and John.
The family would like to express appreciation to the wonderful caring staff of Western Manor who were so kind to Papa Lane during his brief stay.
Funeral services will be 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, at the Smith West Chapel, 304 34th St. West. Interment will be at Terrace Gardens cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Eastern Montana Mental Health Center, PO Box 1530, Miles City, MT 59301.

Harold D. Lingelbach Sr.
Harold D. Lingelbach Sr., 65, of Billings passed away at home Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, after an extended illness.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, at Cremation or Funeral Gallery, 8th Street. W. & St. Johns Avenue. Memorials may be made to Big Sky Hospice, PO Box 35033, Billings, MT 59107.
Harold was born Oct. 19, 1934, in Ault, Colo., a son of Gus and Grace Mead Lingelbach. They moved to Hysham and later to Shepherd where he graduated from Shepherd High. Harold married Peggy Malek in Billings. He loved his grandchildren, fishing, working with wood and enjoyed camping in their trailer.
Harold was a member of the Operating Engineers Local 400 and the Moose Lodge in Sheridan, Wyo.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Peggy; two sons, Tim (Mary) Lingelbach of Riverdale, N.D., and Dean (Judy) Lingelbach Jr., of East Helena; two daughters, Margaret Williamson of Sheridan and Linda Lingelbach of Billings; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two sisters, JoAnn (Wayne) Yadon of Portland, Ore., and Arlene (Shadow) Jorgenson of Apache Junction, Ariz.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Harold was preceded in death by his parents and in-laws, Joe and Mable Malek.
Arrangements were made by Cremation or Funeral Gallery.

Kathleen E. Miars
FORSYTH - Kathleen E. Miars, 73, of Forsyth, died Wednesday Feb. 16, 2000, at the Rosebud Health Care Center.
Kathleen was born Aug. 4, 1926, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the daughter of George and Josephine Smith Logan. She grew up and attended schools in Ottumwa, graduating from Ottumwa High School. Kathleen moved to Colstrip with her family in 1945.
On June 14, 1947, Kathleen married Clayton R. Miars in Forsyth. They lived in Forsyth where Kathleen raised her 10 children. She was very active with the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church where she was a member of the Altar Society, enjoyed decorating the altar with floral arrangements and decorating the church for many of the events that took place. Kathleen also enjoyed gardening, sewing, crafts, and reading.
She is survived by her 10 children, Mary Kay (Richard) Chandler of Billings, Jane Ann (William) Morris of Willmington, N.C., Patti Jo (Irv) May of Colstrip, Mont., Cheryl Lynn Zimmerman of Huntsville, Texas, Thomas William (Dawn) Miars of Forsyth, Robert Steven (Linda) Miars of Colstrip, James Anthony Miars of Billings, Theresa (Tom) Fauth of Opheim, Michelle Miars of Forsyth, and Andrew Clayton Miars; 20 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, James Logan of Miles City, George Logan of Billings; and her sister, Mary Jo Hulman of Wisconsin. Kathleen was preceded in death by her husband, Clayton R. Miars in 1973, her brother, Gerald Logan as well as her parents.
Vigil Services will be held 7p.m. Friday, Feb. 18, at the Beals Mortuary Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Forsyth with interment to follow in the Forsyth Catholic cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Rosebud Health Care Center for the Nursing Home Bird Aviary. Beals Mortuary of Forsyth is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Roy Martin Wood
SHERIDAN, Wyo. - Roy Martin Wood, 90, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000, in Sheridan of natural causes.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Interment will follow in the Elks cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice of the Big Horns in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801. Kane Funeral Home is in charge.

Eugenia M. Vanderpool
Eugenia M. Vanderpool, 31, died at her home in Billings Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000, of a gunshot wound.
No services are planned. Cremation was held at Cremation or Funeral Gallery.

Sylvia C. Johnson
CODY, Wyo. - Sylvia C. Johnson, 95, died at West Park Long Term Care Center on Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000.
Private inurnment will take place. Cremation was held at Cremation or Funeral Gallery.

Peter M. Kuntz Sr.
Peter M. Kuntz Sr., 63, died of a heart attack Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000.
A gathering of friends will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Elks Lodge. 934 Lewis Ave. Cremation has taken place at Cremation or Funeral Gallery.
