James 'Mike' Turley
MUSSELSHELL - James "Mike" Turley was born the fourth son of Gerald Emmet and Regina Stovall Turley on Nov. 24, 1935, in Billings. Mike passed away Feb. 3, 2000, from complications stemming from cancer at the family ranch south of Musselshell.
From Musselshell, he tackled the world with a friendly heart, along with a little sport and mischief, working with his family and brother, Gerald until Gerald's untimely death in 1981. Mike attended grade school at the Mountain Home School near the family ranch until eighth grade and then attended school in Roundup. He met his life-long mate, Maxine Polsak, in Roundup and they were married Sept. 27, 1958. Mike and Maxine raised six children on the family ranch.
Mike was an athletic young man and boxed Golden Gloves, as did the rest of his brothers. He boxed as a bantamweight and featherweight and won several district and state trophies. He also assisted with coaching boxing at the Roundup Boxing Club and maintained a life-long interest in boxing.

He was a come-from-behind fighter and won many battles he was expected to lose. The cancer was one battle he fought long and hard, although it finally got the best of him. Dad instilled the great values of family, friends and community into everybody that he knew. He strived to see that his children obtained a good education. He was very civic minded, serving as a school board member for Musselshell School District for many years and assisted with community gatherings at the Musselshell School. He was a devoted Catholic and a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus. His hearty laugh and joy of life will be truly missed.
