James 'Mike' Turley
MUSSELSHELL - James "Mike" Turley was born the fourth son of Gerald Emmet and Regina Stovall Turley on Nov. 24, 1935, in Billings. Mike passed away Feb. 3, 2000, at the family ranch south of Mussel-shell from complications stemming from cancer.
From Mus-selshell, he tackled the world with a friendly heart, along with a little sport and mischief, working with his family and brother, Gerald, until Gerald's untimely death in 1981. Mike attended grade school at the Mountain Home School near the family ranch until eighth grade and then attended school in Roundup. He met his life-long mate, Maxine Polsak, in Roundup and they were married Sept. 27, 1958. Mike and Maxine raised six children on the family ranch.
Mike was an athletic young man and boxed Golden Gloves, as did the rest of his brothers. He boxed as a bantamweight and featherweight and won several district and state trophies. He also assisted with coaching boxing at the Roundup Boxing Club and maintained a life-long interest in boxing.
Mike loved to fish and hunt, especially big game, and was an excellent marksman. He often went hunting with limited ammunition after having quoted his own father "that it only takes one shell".
While growing up, he enjoyed racing horses and ponies at the ranch and won several races at the Musselshell Valley fairgrounds.
His heart was always in operating farm machinery, especially harvesting grain and also operating heavy equipment. Mike was always willing to assist his neighbors and was probably instrumental in putting out as many forest fires as any man in Musselshell County.
Mike enjoyed not only his own kids, but everyone's kids. He enjoyed the many years that he drove the Musselshell bus route and activity bus for Roundup High School, long after his own children were grown.
Mike was a trooper in that he always made every attempt to avoid a conflict, but resigned himself to take on a battle when left no other choice. He was a come-from-behind fighter and won many battles he was expected to lose. The cancer was one battle he fought long and hard, although it finally got the best of him. Dad instilled the great values of family, friends and community into everybody that he knew. He strived to see that his children obtained a good education. He was very civic minded, serving as a school board member for Musselshell School District for many years and assisted with community gatherings at the Musselshell School. He was a devoted Catholic and a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus. His hearty laugh and joy of life will be truly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Patrick in 1961 and Gerald O'Neill in 1981.
Mike is survived by his wife, Maxine; sons, Michael of Bozeman, Greg (Kathy) of Musselshell, Thomas of Bozeman and Brian (Cindy) of Huntley; daughters, Denise (Chuck) Gilfeather of Shepherd and Diane (Guy) Moran of Dayton, Ohio; six grandchildren, Daniel, Nicole and Tyler Gilfeather, Jessica and Justin Moran, and Rebecca Turley; brothers, Edward (Katie) of B.C.
