Interment in the Four Mile cemetery, under the direction of Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney.
Jack was born May 14, 1924, in Salem, Mont., to George L.K. Rasmussen and Norma P. (Burns) Rasmussen, the eldest son of eight children. Jack was raised on a farm on Beaver Creek on the Crow Reservation. He attended grade school at the Owl Creek School and high school in Lodge Grass. During the summers, Jack grew up working for different cattle outfits including John Rice, SV Company/Faddis-Kennedy, Jim and Murray Brown.
In the winter of 1943, Jack entered the Army taking his basic training at Camp Roberts, Calif. He was sent overseas where he joined the 158th Regiment known as the Bushmasters in the action of the South Pacific. Jack was honorably discharged in 1946.
Jack then went to work for the Montana Livestock Commission as a brand inspector working in Billings, Great Falls, Glendive and Sidney. He worked two years brand inspecting before going into a trucking business with his brother George for a year. He then went to work for the Montana National Guard full-time as an administrative assistant and first sergeant of Company B of Fairview. It was at this time that he met his wife of 44 years, Ellen Anderson, a nurse at the Sidney Hospital. Jack and Ellen were united in marriage on Oct. 8, 1955. Jack worked for the National Guard until May, 1957, but his heart was always with the cattle. So when the Department of Livestock contacted him to come to work again as a state stock inspector, he did. Jack spent over 30 years at the Sidney Livestock Market Center, as the inspector in charge.
Jack was raised in the era when a cowboy's tools were his saddle, a good horse and the most welcome sight was the chuck wagon. Dad shared with all of us this love of the land, his eye for a good horse and his ability to "think like a cow". Jack also used this experience and expertise working cattle in his longtime profession of brand inspecting.
Jack was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, the Men's Prayer Group, American Legion, Lions Club of Fairview and the VFW Post No. 4099, of Sidney.
Some of Jack's most cherished moments was the time he spent with his girls and grandchildren. He took great pride in their many accomplishments. Grandpa, we all love you and will miss you deeply. You showed us all such courage and strength in your battle against cancer. But we take great comfort in knowing you are resting in the arms of the Lord.
Jack died Monday morning, March 20, 2000, at the Sidney Health Center after a courageous and dignified battle with cancer, with his life-long partner, Ellen, at his side. He will be dearly missed by his family and many friends left behind. So long old friend, Dad, husband and Grandpa.
Jack's survivors are: his wife, Ellen, of Fairview; daughters, Carol Ann (Greg) Breuer of Fairview, Audrey L. (Scott) McRae, of Billings, and Gail L. (Douglas) Slotsve of Billings; grandchildren, Peter and Robert Breuer, Jack and Kendra Slotsve, Brett and Joel McRae; brother, James Phillip Rasmussen of Lodge Grass; sisters, Norma Buckheim, of Escondido, Calif., Kathleen (Gerald) Young of Rochester, Wash., and Donna (Lou) Striefel of Edmond, Okla.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, one brother.
Memorials may be to the Zion Lutheran Church or charity of your choice.
