Stephen L. Mackey
Stephen L. Mackey, age 78, of Billings, died on Thursday, March 16, 2000, at Aspen Meadows Transitional Care Unit. Mr. Mackey was born at Lewiston, Idaho, on Jan. 29, 1924, the son of Oliver M. and Gertrude H. (Lyons) Mackey.
Mr. Mackey attended school in Lewiston and Seattle. He then attended Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H., and the University of Idaho in Moscow. He was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity.
He enlisted in the Amy Air Corps. in 1942 and became a first lieutenant and pilot of a B-24 heavy bomber. During World War II, he served overseas in the China-Burma-India theater, where he flew 31 combat missions.
After the war, he returned to Lewiston where he worked for the American Bank and Trust, becoming a vice-president. He was married to Jean McGuire of Helena in 1948. He later owned and managed a motel in Palm Springs, Calif., for a few years, then returned to banking as a vice-president of the First National Bank of Juneau, Alaska. Since 1967, he was a dealer and collector of antiques, and for about 10 years had a store in Lewiston.
He was a avid sports fan, especially in football at all levels. In 1994, Mr. Mackey moved from Lewiston to Billings to live near his son, Stephen C. Mackey.
Mr. Mackey is survived by his son, Stephen C. and daughter-in-law, Lorri S. Case, of Billings and three nieces and two nephews, together with their families in Idaho, Oregon, California and Colorado; by two step-grandchildren, Julie Keck and Matthew Keck of Bozeman. He is also survived by Patricia Mackey Givens, formerly married to Mr. Mackey's brother, Dr. Oliver Mackey Jr., who preceded him in 1964; and his cousin, A. L. Lyons Jr., and his family, of Boise, Idaho. Mr. Mackey's longtime companion and pet Siamese, Chin-Chin, will also miss him.
Mr. Mackey will be buried next to his father, mother and brother at the Normal Hill cemetery, Masonic Division, in Lewiston, Idaho. The time and day of service are pending. Dahl Funeral Chapel is making arrangements.

Dorothy Perrine Mohland
GREAT FALLS - Dorothy Perrine Mohland, 78, died March 15, 2000, of natural causes.
Dorothy was born Oct. 1, 1921, on her parents' ranch south of Stanford. Dorothy graduated from the University of Montana in 1942 with a bachelor of arts degree in business administration. In 1944, she married John W. Mohland in Missoula. Her husband of 55 years preceded her in death by 26 days.
Dorothy was an accomplished gardener and cook who loved to knit, sew and play cards. Dorothy is survived by three daughters, Marianne Mohland of Mesquite, Nev., Lori Buckalew of Colstrip and Jayne Mohland of Bridger; three sons, John J. Mohland and Gordon R. Mohland of Billings and Jerry K. Mohland of Great Falls; sisters, Kathryn P. Whitten of Hanford, Calif., Shirley Morrison of Missoula and Ruth Wolff of Billings, 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 20, at Croxford and Sons Funeral Home. Burial will be at Highland cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the charity of one's choice.

Sean David O'Leary
CASPER, Wyo. - Sean David O'Leary, 47, former Dayton resident, died on Thursday, March 16, 2000.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 21, at Holy Name Catholic Church. Interment will follow in the Dayton cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is in charge. Memorials may be made to St. Edmunds Parish in Ranchester in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Robert Presnell
BUFFALO, Wyo. - Robert Presnell, 71, died on March 16, 2000, at the Johnson County Healthcare Center.
The family has requested no services. Friends may donate to the American Cancer Society in care of Adams Funeral Home.

Marijean Raab
Marijean Raab died March 17, 2000, following a lengthy illness. She was born in Whitehall to a pioneer family, Edwin and Lulu Murray Beall. Edwin's ancestors migrated to Montana during the gold rush. Marijean attended school in Whitehall. Her early life was challenged by the death of her father when she was three, followed by the death of her mother when Marijean was 18.
Marijeau married Gerald Raab in Whitehall in September 1957. She accompanied Jerry while he completed higher education, first in Corvallis, Ore., and later at Stanford. They settled in Billings in 1958.
Marijean was a great listener, and nurtured many friendships. She was noted for her correspon-dence. She was an excellent home-maker, and gardener, and took great pride in being a good neighbor.
Survivors include her husband, Gerald of Billings; brother, Dean (Rachel) Beall, and three nieces, Katherine (Charles) Thorne of Missoula, Susan Beall of Moses Lake, Wash., Joan Morman of Deer Lodge.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Dahl Funeral Chapel will be making arrangements. Memorial maybe made to Big Sky Hospice.

Elizabeth M. Salsbury
Elizabeth M. Salsbury, 86, of Billings, died Thursday, March 16, 2000, at St. Vincent Hospital and Health Center.
She was born April 25, 1913, at Seattle, the daughter of Lorance and Anna (Johnson) Byrne. She graduated from Queen Anne High School in Seattle. Her father was a civil engineer and the family moved many places including Alaska, Canada, and then to the Missoula area where Elizabeth attended and graduated from the University of Montana.
After graduation, she taught high school at Florence, Philipsburg and Laurel. While teaching in Laurel, she met her future husband, James W. Salsbury Jr. They were married Feb. 8, 1943, in Clovis, N.M., while Mr. Salsbury was serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps.
After WW II they lived in Helena before moving to Billings in 1950. Besides raising her family, she helped her husband in his business.
Elizabeth was an avid reader and belonged to the Book Club. She and her husband were active socially, playing bridge, dancing and being involved with the Billings Elks Lodge. She was very fond of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving are two sons, James W. Salsbury III and his wife, Diana, and Loran B. Salsbury and his wife, Peggy both of Billings; a daughter, Anne Steimnitz and her husband, Jules of San Francisco; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1987, two brothers, Gilman and Patrick, and a sister, Eileen.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday, March 20, at Smith's Downtown Chapel, 120 No. 26th St. Interment will follow at Mountview cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, 12 Noon to 8 p.m. for friends.
Memorials may be made to Billings Elk Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 20302, Billings, MT 59104.

D. Mildred Smith
GLASGOW - D. Mildred Smith, 90, formerly of Forsyth, died Friday, March 10, 2000, at the Valley View Nursing Home in Glasgow.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 20 at the Forsyth cemetery. Beals Mortuary of Forsyth is in charge.

Shirley R. Topham
Early Thursday morning, March 16, 2000, Shirley R. Topham, wrapped in the loving arms of her husband and children, went to the heavens after a courageous struggle with COPD. Our loving Momma was born Oct. 3, 1931, the middle child of Irving and Nettie Spunt in Chicago. After moving to southern California in her teen years and sharing a loving family life with her brothers Herbie and Luie, she met a U.S. Marine, the love of her life, Cliff Topham.
Shirley lived her life full of love and joy and giving to others. Her beautiful smile and dancing blue eyes will forever be remembered at the mention of her name. Her joy was working with her husband and best friend of 44 years and sharing their business endeavors. She loved singing in the choir at her church, Atonement Lutheran, where she stood tall among the choir singing her strong baritone voice. Shirley's number one joy was holding and loving her eleven grandchildren.
Survivors include her devoted husband; three daughters, Debbie Harris Barnes (grandsons, Arron and Caleb), Monica (Steve) Sayler (grandson, Nathan) and Sherry "Tedee" (Steve) Church (grandchildren Nikki, Crystal, Austin and Tressa); one son, Cliff Jr. (grandchildren, Alexander, Christopher, Natalie and Jessica); and two brothers, Herbert Spunt and Louis Spunt Kona.
Memorial will be 2 p.m. Monday at Atonement Lutheran Church, 407 Wicks Lane and Lake Elmo Drive with reception following. Memorials may be made to the Deaconess Billings Clinic Foundation, c/o Pulmonary Unit, P0 Box 3566, Billings, MT 59103. Arrangements were made by Cremation or Funeral Gallery.

Sarah Mann Zueske
Sarah Mann Zieske, age 86, quietly passed away at her home on Friday, March 17, 2000.
Sarah entered this world on April 25, 1913, at Carson, N.D., a daughter born to Adam and Catherine (Wuest) Mann. She was married to Harlow Zieske in Heil, N.D., on Jan. 29, 1931.
Together they moved to Billings where Sarah worked at the Rex Laundry and later Big Sky Linen until her retirement. Working in her garden and flower beds, baking pies, and making German dishes were things she enjoyed doing for her family.
Mrs. Zieske was preceded in death by her husband, Harlow; three sons, Alden, Bob and Vernon; two daughters-in-law, Virginia and Jacqueline Zieske; a grandson, Thomas; a great-granddaughter, Catherine; eight brothers and one sister. Survivors include her daughter, Darlene (Wilbur) Kembel; three sons, Orville, LaVerne (Bonnie), and Ron (Bonnie); a daughter-in-law, Edna Zieske; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; three brothers-in-law, O.R. Jessee, Harold (Edna) Stradtman, and Roy Zieske; and three sisters-in-law, Katherine Zieske, Margaret Mann, and Betty Mann.
Visitations will begin at the Smith West Chapel, 304 34th Street West at noon on Sunday. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 20, at the Smith West Chapel with interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Should friends desire, memorials are suggested to Big Sky Hospice.

Virginia Ruth Achterberg
Virginia Ruth Achterberg, age 75, of Billings, died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at Parkview Care Center where she had resided since 1994.
Virginia was born April 21, 1924 at Dryhead in Carbon County, the daughter of Ben and Laura Belle (Polley) Mellick. She and her parents lived at Kalispell where she attended school.
In 1942, Virginia moved to Seattle where she worked for Sears, Roebuck Co. and later for the shipyards. After WWII, she worked for various department stores in Seattle. In 1969 she moved to Billings and was employed at St. Vincent's Hospital. She retired from that position on May 1, 1989.
Virginia will be greatly missed by her friends and the staff members at Parkview Care Center. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Dorothy Mellick of Laurel and other nieces and nephews.
Visitations will begin on Saturday, March 18 at the Smith Downtown Chapel. Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, March 20, at Smith Downtown Chapel with interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Bruce M. Brown
MILES CITY - Bruce M. Brown, age 78, of Miles City, passed away Thursday, March 16, 2000, at the Holy Rosary Health Center.
Bruce was born on Feb. 25, 1922, in Miles City, the son of Charles and Margaret (McLean) Brown. He attended Custer County HS, graduating in 1940. Following graduation, he attended the University of Michigan and graduated from University of Montana in Missoula. In 1942, he entered the Army Air Corps and was honorably discharged as a 1st lieutenant. On Feb. 17, 1946, he married Margaret "Peggy" Dale in Miles City.
Bruce held offices as county attorney, city attorney, director of First National Bank, trustee of CCHS, member of the Board of Trustees of Pine Hills School for Boys, and was eastern vice president of the Montana Constitutional Convention. He was also a member of the State Board of Public Education, Miles City Town & Country Club, past president of the Miles City Club, Elks Club, Eagles, and the State Commission of Practices. Bruce practiced law until 1999, when he retired due to ill health.
Bruce is survived by four children: Barbara Purdy of Great Falls; Jim Brown of Torrance, Calif.; Don Brown of Salem, Ore.; and Stuart Brown of Chanhassen, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Fidella Brown. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margaret "Peggy" Brown in 1998; and a son, Mark in 1996.
Memorial services will be held Monday, March 20, at 11 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church in Miles City with Rev. Sherwood McKay officiating. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Miles City is in charge of the arrangements.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Miles City Public Library, 1 South 10th, Miles City, MT 59301.

Signe 'Sig' Brown
MILES CITY - Signe "Sig" Brown, 87, formerly of Livingston, died on Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at the Friendship Villa in Miles City.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 20, 2000, at the Mountain View cemetery in Livingston. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Miles City is in charge.

John P. 'Johnnie' Branger
BRIDGER - On March 15, 2000, John P. "Johnnie" Branger III, 77, passed away at the Valley Health Care Center surrounded by his family. A son of John and Margaret (Wigen) Branger, he was born in Absarokee on Feb. 18, 1923.
Johnnie was raised on the family TO Bar Ranch in the East Rosebud Canyon and received his education in the Roscoe and Absarokee schools. Born to be a cowboy, he was a world class bronc rider, dude wrangler, farrier, outfitter, guide and packed for the U.S. Forest Service. He ranched at Roscoe, Ennis, Livingston, and the Red Lodge area.
Johnnie and Betty O'Shea were united in marriage on Aug. 6, 1947. She preceded him in death in 1976. He later married Pat Kennick in 1980, and she passed away in 1993. He is survived by his four children, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. They are: Duane (Mary) and grandchildren, Amy and Patrick, Billings; Nick and grandsons, Jesse and Chris, Billings; John IV (Lori) and grandson, John V "Eric", Ennis; Bennie (Gary) Clark, granddaughter, Jennipher (Bob) Sitz; and great-grandchildren, Taylor and Lane; grandson, David (Dulce) and great-grandsons, Colter and Luke, Ennis. Johnnie is also survived by his two sisters, Esther (Merrill) Miller, and Rosina (Jack) Hash; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a multitude of friends. He will be greatly missed by each one.
Johnnie will be fondly remembered for his quick wit and often quoted one- liners. He endured many adversities in his lifetime but always pulled through with his fortitude, courage and humorous disposition.
Memorial services will be held at 2 a.m. on Tuesday, at Esther Miller's residence in Roscoe. If friends wish, memorials can be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 35455 Tamarac Drive., Suite 200, Denver, CO 80237 or to the charity of choice.
Cremation or Funeral Gallery is in charge of arrangements.

Theodora A. Dudley
MILES CITY - Theodora A. Dudley, 95, of Spokane and formerly of Miles City, died on Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at a nursing home in Spokane.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 20, 2000, in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow in the family lot in the Custer County cemetery.
