ROY HUNT
ROBERTS — Roy Hunt, 90, of Roberts, died late Monday afternoon, Dec. 25, 2000 after enjoying the Christmas holiday with his family.
Roy was born on the family ranch one and a half miles north of Roberts on Jan. 6, 1910, a son of George and Annie (Lackie) Hunt. He attended school in Roberts, graduating from Roberts High School.

On June 23, 1930, Roy married Ruth M. Smith in Twin Falls, Idaho. They lived in Idaho for two years before returning to Roberts where Roy operated the family ranch until retiring. He also ran cattle on the Crow Reservation for many years with other members of the Carbon County Cattleman’s Association. The friendships he made there with the Native Americans always held a special place in Roy’s heart.

After retiring, the couple enjoyed traveling south for the winters, spending time at Cottonwood Cove at Lake Mead. Roy was happiest when he was outdoors, whether it was hunting, fishing or horseback riding.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Al Bedoo Shrine, Roberts United Methodist Church, Elks Lodge, and Good Sam Travel Club.

Roy was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, who died Sept. 4, 1980; by two brothers, Sammy and George, and one sister, Edith Hunt.

Survivors include four daughters, Jean (Ed) McCormick of Joliet, Judith Borrup of Billings, Georgianna (Ron) Marshall of Roberts, and Donna Sue (John) Bartkowski of Warden, Wash.; six grandchildren, Kathy Ainsworth, Lynn McCormick, Frank H. Danichek, Beth Marshall, Jamie McFarland and Maryruth Bartkowsi, and 11 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three special friends, his caregivers, Norma Jean Anderson, Audra Barndt, and especially Cherie Stoken.

Funeral services were held Dec. 29 in the Roberts United Methodist Church. Interment was in the Roberts Cemetery, with the Olcott Funeral Chapel of Red Lodge in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be given to the Roberts United Methodist Church or the Roberts Community Foundation.

HELEN KENNEDY WATERS
BOZEMAN — Helen Kennedy Waters passed away Dec. 27, 2000. She was born June 15, 1903 in Belt to Walter Kennedy and Elsie Coeur d’Alene Leland Kennedy.
She graduated from the University of Montana with a degree in library science in 1925. At that time she moved to Billings and accepted a position at Billings Parmly Library. She married Robert Medley Waters on Jan. 14, 1929 in Great Falls. A daughter, Jean, was born to them on April 27, 1936. The couple resided in Billings their entire married life, where Robert was associated with Security Trust and Savings Bank. He preceded her in death on Dec. 28, 1980. Helen remained in Billings until Dec. 5, 2000, at which time she moved to Bozeman to be near her family.

Helen was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, PEO Chapter E, Alpha Chi Omega Sorority, and the Hilands Golf Club. Her love of reading and books remained with her always. Helen’s favorite quotation was:

You may have riches untold
Coffers of silver and caskets of gold,
But richer than I you will never be
For I had a mother who read to me.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Doris, and her brothers, John and Leland.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jean and James H. Nicholson, Jr. of Belgrade; her granddaughters, Sarah Jean Nicholson of Lake Oswego, Ore., Becky Wipplinger (Jack) of Red Lodge, Nancy Francis (Brian) and Emily Jones (Robin) of Belgrade, and great-grandchildren, Skyler, Lat and Elsie Coeur d’Alene Wipplinger, Mariah Kennedy and Susan Francis and Zane and Dylan Livingston-Jones, and many nieces and nephews. She was loved and will be missed by them all.

A memorial service was held Dec. 29, 2000 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Billings. Memorials may be made to the school libraries of the Red Lodge School District, 413 S. Oakes, Red Lodge, MT 59068.

MARY PATRICIA BOLMEIER
RED LODGE — Mary Patricia Bolmeier, beloved mother and grandmother, died peacefully Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001 in San Francisco, Calif. She was 75. Pat was preceded in death by her loving husband, Wallace R. Bolmeier, in 1993.
Mrs. Bolmeier was currently living in San Francisco, and maintained homes in Palm Desert, Calif., and Red Lodge. The Bolmeier family had previously resided in Powell, Wyo. for several years. Pat spent her life committed to her family, friends and her church.

Survivors include her daughters, Beth Ann Bolmeier of Conrad and Nancy Bolmeier Fisher and her husband, Ian, of San Francisco, and two grandsons, Michael Bolmeier and Ryan Fisher.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 12, 2001 in St. Agnes Catholic Church in Red Lodge. Rite of Committal will be in the Red Lodge Cemetery. Olcott Funeral Chapel of Red Lodge is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to St. Agnes Catholic Church, Box 1067, Red Lodge, MT 59068.

KATHRYN EGAN CHOATE
NIPOMO, Calif. — Kathryn Egan Choate died Dec. 17, 2000. She was 88.
Kathryn was born Jan. 4, 1912 to Walter A. Egan and Mary Blakley Egan in Bridger, Mont. She attended high school in Red Lodge, and Montana State Normal College in Dillon. She taught one-room schools — the Tony School near Luther and the Loyning School on Elbow Creek. Later, she taught in the Glasgow public schools.

In 1941 she met and married Reu R. Choate of Roanoke, Va. They had one daughter.

Upon moving to San Luis Obispo, Calif. in 1944, Kathryn continued to teach school. She retired from Atascadera Union School District in 1972 as a reading specialist. She was a graduate of San Jose State College. After teaching 42 years, she tutored children until 1995.

Kathryn is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Kay (Choate) Dana and George Dana of Nipomo, Calif.; a granddaughter, Leslie Dana and her husband, Bill Wambach of Hercules, Calif.; a grandson, Joseph Dana of Nipomo, and many loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Eugene A. Egan and Harold E. Egan, and a sister, Blanche Egan Ploof.

Kathryn belonged to the St. Patrick’s Church Altar Society, University Women and Retired Teachers’ Association. Her hobbies included gardening, sewing, family history and travel. In November, 1997, Kathryn wrote an article for the Montana Free Press about farming on Elbow Creek and the Loyning School.

A memorial Mass was celebrated Dec. 29, 2000 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Arroyo Grande, Calif. Father James P. Henry officiated.

HARRIETT L. (BAILEY) HANSEN
GREAT FALLS — Harriett L. (Bailey) Hansen, 85, of Great Falls, died of cancer Jan. 3, 2001 in a local nursing home. Cremation has taken place.
Harriett was born in Williamsburg, Va., on July 12, 1915, and was just an infant when she left Virginia with her mother, sister, brother and grandmother to come west to Montana. She grew up in the Winnett area, attending school in Winnett and Brusch Creek country school. As a young lad, Harriett worked at her grandmother’s restaurant, Mother’s Cafe in Winnett.

In 1935 she married Gunnar Hansen and moved to Minnesota. Gunnar passed away in 1957, and Harriett moved back to Montana, settling in Belfry.

In the 1960s she moved to Winnett and operated the Commercial Hotel with the help of a friend, Ann Williams. Harriett also cooked at the Stockman Cafe. Again leaving Winnett, she worked at a cafe in Cooke City for several years. She moved back to Belfry in 1975, where was an active member of the senior citizens (serving as cook for 20 years). She belonged to the Belfry United Methodist Women until she moved to Great Falls in 1995.

Harriett was an excellent seamstress and loved to crochet. She also loved to garden, and took great pride in her flowers.

She is survived by her three sons, Martin and wife, Sandy, of Butte, Bob and wife, Judy, of Minneapolis, Minn., and Vic and wife, Debbie, of Great Falls; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service and burial of cremains will be held in Winnett in late March.

EMMA PAULINE KANE
RED LODGE — Emma Pauline Kane, 100, of Red Lodge, died Jan. 3, 2001 at the Beartooth Hospital and Health Center.
Emma was born at home in New Douglas, Ill. (Madison County) on March 13, 1900. She was the daughter of George Hinnrichs and Dora Reener Hinnrichs. She was the youngest of five children. She attended German Lutheran School in her early school years. In 1923 she married Mark Peter Kane of Carrollton, Ill. They farmed and raised cattle in west central Illinois until the death of her husband in 1966. She moved to Carrollton at that time and lived with her sisters, Anna and Marie. After Marie’s death, Emma and Anna moved to Red Lodge, where Emma built a home along Rock Creek and lived there alone for over 25 years after the death of Anna. In October of 2000, Emma moved to the Bee Hive Home, an assisted living facility in Red Lodge.

Emma’s life centered on her family, traveling and cooking, and she continued to be interested in animals and agriculture. She loved spending winters in Apache, Ariz. All who had the privilege of knowing her were delighted by her candor, keen wit and stories of the old days.

Emma was preceded in death by her husband, Mark, her three sisters, her brother and one great-grandson.

She is survived by her two sons, James Kane, M.D., and his wife, Juanita, and Michael Kane and his wife, Emily, all of Red Lodge; eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place. Prayer Vigil will be Friday, Jan. 12 at 7 p.m. at Dahl Chapel in Red Lodge. Memorial Mass will be Saturday, Jan. 13 at 11 a.m. at St. Agnes Church. Internment of ashes will be at St. John’s Cemetery, Carrollton, Ill.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Beartooth Hospital and Health Center, P.O. Box 590, Red Lodge, MT 59068, or St. Agnes Church, P.O. Box 1067, Red Lodge, MT 59068.

Dahl Funeral and Cremation Service in Red Lodge is handling the arrangements.
