Harriet M. 'Billie' Baxter
Harriet M. "Billie" Baxter, 86, of Billings, died Tuesday evening, March 13, 2000, at her home.
The daughter of Theodore and Josephine Martineau, she was born May 13, 1913, in Ramah, N.M. She married Lindsey Baxter in Salt Lake City, Nov. 9, 1944. They moved to Billings in 1948 and made their home here until moving to San Jose, Calif., in the 1960s. She returned to Billings in 1990.
Harriet was a member of the Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and enjoyed travel and church work.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
Survivors include her daughter, Deean Leckie and her husband, Marvin (Speed) of Billings, two brothers and a sister, Theodore Martineau, Gertrude Grisham and James Martineau, of St. George, Utah; four grandchildren, Lisa Leckie of Helena, Ross Leckie of Billings, and Gary Leckie and Shawn Leckie of Nampa, Idaho, and nine great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at Fort Harrison National cemetery, Helena.
Memorials may be made to the Children's Miracle Network, 830 Washington St., Watertown, NY 13601.
Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist has charge of arrangements.

Jane H. McVay
GREAT FALLS - Jane H. McVay, 81, passed away March 14, 2000, of natural causes.
Jane was born Jan. 24, 1919, in Billings. Jane was educated in Billings, and was a granddaughter of a Billings pioneer, Henry W. Rowley. She married H. Clifford McVay, Sept. 19, 1940 in Great Falls. They made their home in Billings until their move to Great Falls in 1978.
While living in Billings, Jane was a Pink Lady at the Deaconess Hospital and later in Great Falls. During the summer she made her home in Red Lodge, and she especially liked living on the Missouri River south of Cascade. Her hobbies included playing bridge, reading and cooking.
Survivors include her daughter, Margaret Nybo of Great Falls; son, Lawrence Henry McVay of Tacoma, Wash.; one brother, Robert Howe of Billings, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and two infant sons.
Private family services will be held. Cremation has taken place. Croxford and Sons Funeral Home of Great Falls was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be given to charity of one's choice.

Sylvia Virginia Engler Sanders
RED LODGE - Sylvia Virginia Engler Sanders, 84, died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at Cedar Wood Villa Nursing Home, where she had resided since September 1993. Sylvia was born in Cottonwood, Mont., Aug. 22, 1915. She married Bernard Engler in June 1938.
Sylvia spent most of her life working as a cook. She enjoyed cooking, fishing, music, and most of all her grandchildren. Sylvia was a lifetime member of the Eagles Auxiliary and a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church in Red Lodge.
Survivors include three daughters, Colleen (Bob) Currier, of Soldotna, Alaska; Faye (Jim) Allen of Roberts; and Shirley (Rich) Roat of Red Lodge; two sisters, Lee (Charles) Barnett of Cody, Wyo.; and Leona (Bob) Davidson of Tracy, Calif.; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was proceeded in death by her husband, Bernard, her mother, Senia Kungas Rintala; her brothers, Matt and Waino Kungas and her grandson, Wayne Payovich.
Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Dahl Funeral Chapel in Red Lodge. A reception will follow.

Gordon R. Cook Sr.
Gordon R. Cook Sr., 82, passed away on Sunday, March 12, 2000, at Western Manor Health Care Center. He was born on Dec. 26, 1917, in Fort Ripley, Minn., to Ray and Clara Stickle Cook. He grew up and attended schools in the Brainerd area and helped deliver milk for the Cook Dairy Farm. He worked at the Northern Pacific Railroad in Brainerd.
On Sept. 16, 1943, he was united in marriage to Esther Olson in Brainerd. They lived south of Brainerd until 1961 when he was transferred and moved his family to Laurel, Mont., and later retired from Burlington Northern Railroad.
He enjoyed fishing, camping, traveling, and inventing things to make life easier.
He is survived by his wife, Esther; three daughters, Nancy Lee Voorhees of Silesia, Marianne (Russ) Evans of Tacoma, Wash., and Sandra (Dale) Smith of Indianapolis, Ind.; three sons, Gordon Jr. (Colleen), David (Diana) and Arne Cook all of Billings; six grandchildren, Rick (Tracy) Tipps of Hayden, Idaho, Scott (Heide) Tipps of Missoula, Bradley (Kristy) Cook of Fullerton, Calif., Wendy (Scott) Rose of Flagstaff, Ariz., Travis Cook and Stephenie Cook of Billings; three great-grandchildren, Samantha Rose, Kayla Johnson, and Caytie Tipps, and a foreign exchange granddaughter, Yuki (Pete) Heimer and son, Taizo of Osaka, Japan. Also surviving is one brother, Rev. Herbert Cook of Alta, Iowa; two sisters, Elaine Olson, Phoenix, and Margaret Stenzinger of St. Paul, Minn., and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and two sisters.
Visitations may be made at Smith West Chapel, 304 34th Street West beginning Wednesday morning. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 16 at the LDS Avenue D Chapel, 6th Street West and Avenue D. Cremation will follow with private inurnment at Terrace Gardens Mausoleum.

Marguerite Phillippi
BROADUS - Marguerite "Margie" Phillippi died Monday, March 13, 2000, at the Powder River Manor in Broadus.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 16, in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 17, in the Powder River Congregational Church. Interment will follow in the family lot in the Valley View cemetery.

Mildred G. Kilby
Mildred G. Kilby, 66, of Billings, died Monday, March 13, 2000, at a local hospital.
Cremation will take place. No services are planned at this time. Smith Downtown Chapel is in charge.

Sadie P. Pope
MALTA - Sadie P. Pope, 86, died Sunday, March 12, 2000, at the New Country Home of natural causes.
Wake services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 15, at the St. Mary's Catholic Church. Mass will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 16, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with interment in the Malta cemetery. Adams Funeral Home is in charge. Memorials may be given to the New Country Home or the Mustang Foundation.

Elvina P. Random
MALTA - Elvina P. Random, 91, died Monday, March 13, 2000, at her home of natural causes.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, March 17, at the Adams Memorial Chapel with interment in the Hillview cemetery at Hinsdale. Memorials may be made to the Senior Citizens Bus, c/o Malta Senior Citizens, P.O. Box 1051, Malta, MT 59538.

Robert W. Malchow
COFFEE CREEK - Robert Wesley "Bob" Malchow, 76, died Friday, March 10, 2000, of injuries sustained in a vehicle accident.
Visitation will be Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 12 noon to 6 p.m. at the Cloyd Funeral Home in Lewistown. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, March 20, in the Central Montana Memorials Gardens in Lewistown. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Allen John Craig
MISSOULA - Allen John Craig, born June 17, 1986, in Missoula, best friend and son of Tracy L. Sorensen and Michael J. Craig, both of Missoula, and best friend and little brother to Aaron M. Craig of Seattle, left our world to enter into God's care on March 12, 2000.
Allen was a young man, rarely without a smile and quick wit, a blessed sense of humor, a scholar, musician, athlete and artist, a confidant, true friend, nephew, cousin, grandson and great-grandson. Allen attended Rattlesnake Middle School in Missoula and Helena Middle School and Central Elementary School in Helena. Allen's aspirations in life were ambitious, plentiful, and far-reaching. Allen could do anything and everything.
Allen loved to skateboard, snowboard, golf, play basketball, do math, tell stories, read, listen to music, meet people, do beadwork, collect stones, coins and bottles, talk about life, and learn and master every issue to cross his path. He loved to be with his numerous cousins, aunts and uncles, grandparents and great grandmother, extended family, and most especially, his brother. Allen will be remembered for his insistence to give and get a hug and "I love you" every night before he went to bed.
Allen is preceded in death by his grandfather, Albert "John" Craig of Hardin (his namesake), and Linda Ellen O'Connell, his aunt from Billings and Missoula. Allen is survived by his parents and brother, great-grandmother, Lois Sorensen of Missoula, grandparents, Julie and Gary Allen Sorensen (Allen's other namesake) of Missoula and Ellen O'Connell of Billings; uncle, Craig Sorensen and his wife, Michelle of Los Angeles; aunt, Tina McElroy and her husband, Jeff of Missoula uncle, Randy Craig and his wife, Kathy of Ballentine; uncles, Larry Craig and Patrick Craig of Billings and his partner, Hollie of Worland, Wyo.; uncle, John Craig arid his wife, Sheila of Carson City, Nev.; and uncle, Don O'Connell Knaub and his partner, Jennifer of Billings. Allen's cousins are Karl, Gabe, Ezra Lee, Forest, Ellie, Christina, Ashley, Dakota, Asia, Vince, Patrick, David, Ben, Austin, Lexi, Kennedi, Kalei, Peyton, and Jackson. Allen has great-aunts and great-uncles located in several communities in the northwest. Allen also has a very large and loving extended family throughout Montana.
Services for Allen will be on March 16, 11 a.m., at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 202 Brooks, in Missoula. Allen's parents intend to hold memorial services in Billings at a date and time to be announced. Because of Allen's love for animals and times with friends and acquaintances, memorials may be offered in his loving memory to your local Humane Society, Boys and Girls Club and St. Paul's Lutheran Church, the place of Allen's baptism. Winifred Beaulieu Murphy
FRUITLAND, Idaho - Winifred Beaulieu Murphy, 74 of Fruitland, died Monday, March 13, 2000, in a Boise hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 16, at Lienkaemper Chapel in Ontario, Ore., with Pastor John Marshall of the Vale, Ore., Christian Church officiating. Burial will follow in Parkview cemetery in New Plymouth.
Winifred was born Jan. 17, 1926 at Salem, Mass. She is survived by her husband, Rae Murphy of Fruitland; two sons, Gary Murphy of Livingston, Mont., and Pat Murphy of Woodland, Calif.; a daughter; Terry Murphy Knowles of Colusa, Calif.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; her twin brother, Wilfred J. Beaulieu of Danvers, Mass.; brother, Alfred C. Beaulieu of Hartford, Conn.; one sister, Helen Collins of Salem.
She is preceded in death by her sisters, Margaret Arlington and Louise Tarascio and by a brother, Louis Beaulieu.
Memorials may be made to St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center, c/o Lienkaemper Chapel, P.O. Box 970, Ontario, OR 97914.

John E. Sloan
HELENA - John E. Sloan, 81, passed away Monday, March 13, 2000, after a courageous battle with esophageal cancer.
John was born June 6, 1918, in Lakota, N.D., to Edward and Carrie (Henning) Sloan. On June 6, 1945, he married May Bohlman (Thompson, N.D.) in St. Paul, Minn. He attended school in Lakota, N.D., where he was outstanding in athletics and attended North Dakota State College in Fargo, pre-WWII. He later attended the American University in Washington, D.C., after the war, where he completed an education program to prepare World War II veterans for career positions as National Service Officers for the Disabled American Veteran. He was employed by the DAV as for 39 years.
On his retirement, Jan. 1, 1984, he wrote: "Thirty-eight of my 39 years of employment as a DA V National Service Officer have been spent in Montana. During this time, I have filled many important positions which have enriched my life tremendously, but nothing has given me more satisfaction then helping my veteran friends and their families secure benefits to which they were rightfully entitled. My work has been my pleasure."
His tour of duty was enlistment in the U.S. Army Feb. 20, 1941, and was discharged June 24, 1944, with medical disabilities from combat wounds for which he received the Purple Heart. His military service was with Cannon Company, 30th Infantry 3rd Division of the 5th and 7th Armies in Africa and Sicily under Gen. George Patton and in Italy under Gen. Mark Clark.
John was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Military Order of the Purple Heart, American Legion, and honorary member of the World War I Barracks.
John was an enthusiastic supporter of the local schools and Carroll College sports, as well as the Malta Mustangs and M-ettes where he enjoyed watching his grandchildren compete. He was an avid sportsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, and field trials. John assisted the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Division in formulating a "Sportsman's Guide for the Handicapped." He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus, former president of the Helena Retriever Club, and was also a 4-H leader for the Pets and Pedigree Dog Club for 10 years. John enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, training his Labrador retrievers, and most recently, his artistic ability to paint.
He is survived by his wife; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Rocky Tollefson, granddaughter, Kacie Tollefson and grandson, R.J. Tollefson of Malta; brothers, Donald Sloan, Lakota, N.D., Richard and Lois Sloan, San Bruno, Calif., sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and Robert Lamb, Michigan, N.D., and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, John Patrick and John Thomas, and two brothers and two sisters in Lakota.
Visitation will be Wednesday, March 15, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Retz Funeral Home. A vigil service will be held at Retz Funeral Home on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, March 16, at St. Mary's Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Resurrection cemetery with military honors. Donations may be made to cancer research or donor's choice.

Tomey H. Saby
GILLETTE, Wyo. - Tomey H. Saby, 90, died Sunday, March 12, 2000, at Campbell County Memorial Hospital.
Cremation has taken place and a private inurnment will be held at Mora, Minn.

James H. Horn
GREYBULL, Wyo. - James H. Horn, 81, formerly of Greybull, died on Sunday, March 12, 2000, at the Community Care of America in Worland.
Cremation has taken place. No services are planned. Interment of the cremains will take place at a later date. Atwood Family Funeral Directors, Inc. are in charge.

Florence Robson Mungall
DEAVER, Wyo. - Florence Robson Mungall, , age 82 of Deaver, died in Cody on Friday, March 10, 2000, after a struggle with cancer.
Florence Imogene Farnes was born July 3, 1917, in Broadview, Mont. She was the second child of Oscar and Leora Farnes. She started school in Broadview. The family later moved to Hay Basin Community, between Broadview and Roundup, Mont. Florence received her high school diploma in 1932.
She married Kenneth Robson in Roundup, on Dec. 14, 1934. Two of her children were born in Roundup, Bonnie and David. Ken and Flo and their family lived in Belfry, Mont., and Billings before moving to Deaver in 1948. Their third child, Kenneth Robson Jr. was born April 29, 1949.
For the next 50 years, she worked as a cook, a waitress, a postmistress, a town clerk, a mother, a grandmother, a great-grandmother and a 4-H leader. She traveled to Germany, England, Mexico, Hawaii and most of the states. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Birthday Club and Homemakers Club. In her spare time, she loved to travel with her friends and bowling companions to compete in state and national bowling tournaments.
Her husband, Kenneth, died in 1958. She married Robert Mungall in May of 1960. Bob died in November of 1975. She was also preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Raleigh, Orville and Robert; and her daughter, Bonnie. She is survived by her brothers, Harold, Clyde, Bill and Gene Farnes; her two sons, David and wife, Yvonne, and Kenneth and wife, Debbie; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at the Deaver, Wyoming Methodist Church on Saturday, March 17, at 1 p.m. Those wishing may make donations to Rocky Mountain Cancer Center, 1025 9th St., Cody, WY 82414 in Florence's memory.

James G. 'Red' Lindsey
GREYBULL, Wyo. - James G. "Red" Lindsey died on Monday, March 13, 2000, at West Park Hospital in Cody.
Military graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 18, at Hillside cemetery in Greybull. Atwood Family Funeral Directors is in charge. Memorials may be made to Security State Bank in Basin for the Big Horn Basin Cancer Center.
