Edna Clara Ussin
A lone cottonwood tree stood on the North Dakota homestead where Edna was born in 1906. Her life's journey began from these humble beginnings in Burleigh County. As a child, her most vivid memories came from the farm. There was a dapple-gray team of Daisy and Nellie and a collie dog named Fannie that her uncle brought home to her as a puppy. This dog would become her companion to gather eggs and water the chickens. Her special horse named Florry was her heartbreak when she died. Several of her summers were spent cooking for her uncle's haying crew and driving a stacker team. Her first picnic to Applecreek, was the most beautiful spot she had seen at that time. The mischievousness and curiosity of children growing up; the first taste of beer with her sister, Floss, and their mother's frantic search for them. The first clue being their dog asleep by an overturned header box, underneath were the two sleeping girls. The incriminating evidence was nearby, two bottles of Grain Belt Beer. Her memories of growing up were her first barn dance, the hard work and humility learned from sharing the chores and responsibilities of farm life, all lessons that would remain with her for a lifetime. From North Dakota she journeyed to Roundup, Mont., to visit her father, Fred.
Her plans to return to North Dakota were changed when she met Jim Ussin. They later married and had two children, James, Jr. and Betty. She attended school in Billings where she began a lab and X-ray technician course. Her first lob was at the Yellowstone County Nursing Home. In Roundup, she was the first lab and x-ray technician at the memorial hospital there. She completed here career at the Rosebud Community Hospital in Forsyth. She was deeply interested in Montana history, searching its lands for fossils, Indian artifacts, ghost towns and what she called "shack house hunting".
She departed this life on March 3, 2000, at Eagle Cliff Manor Nursing Home, leaving behind her son, James A. Ussin and his wife, Connie; her daughter, Betty Ferguson; her step-daughter, Rose Rowan; grandchildren, Bob Anderson, Terry (Anne) Anderson, Paula (Doug) Rausch, Chris (Brian) Neidhardt, Linda (Ray) Scozzari, Kathy (Jerry) Bell, Jim (Julie) Ussin, Jon (Sylvia) Ussin; 20 great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren. Other survivors include three sisters living in Washington, Mrs. Florence Baarstad, Mrs. Madge Baarstad and Evelyn Sinkula. Her brother, Burleigh, preceded her in death.
The life lessons she learned in North Dakota were those of humility, strictness, strong work ethic, a love of family, friends and animals (cats being her favorite). She compiled a family history of the Boyer and Moynier families. "Don't forget to pay homage to the cottonwood tree and the sod of the North Dakota prairie, for they gave shelter to both families. They kept them warm in the severe North Dakota winters, and cool in the hot dry summers". A special thanks to the staff of Eagle Cliff Manor for their caring help and compassion during her stay with them. Memorials may be sent to the Billings Animal Shelter, Box 1178, Billings 59103 or the charity of your choice.
Vigil service will be held Monday, March 6 at 7 p.m. and funeral mass on Tuesday, March 7, at noon. Due to construction at St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral, both services will be held at Dahl Funeral Chapel, 10 Yellowstone Avenue.
"You will remain in our thoughts and hearts forever."
