Phyllis Childs Morfit
RED LODGE - Phyllis Childs Morfit passed away on Feb. 28, 2000, in Absarokee, surrounded by her family of sons, daughters-in-law, grandchildren and granddaughter-in-law, nieces, grandnieces, nephews and friends, and with the loving care and assistance of the staff of Brookside Retirement Home.
Born on May 1, 1915, in Englewood, N.J., Phyllis was the twin sister of the late Joyce Childs Mackay of Roscoe. Her close and enduring relationship with her sister was a central reference point for her entire life. Together they sustained, protected and nurtured a vibrant and loving extended family. This web of relationships, renewed from generation to generation, was a continuing source of delight, joy and comfort to her right up to the final moment of her passing.
Phyllis' imagination, artistic creativity and ingenuity shone throughout her life. From her earliest formal artistic training at the Cape Cod School of Art, the National Academy of Design in the U.S. and the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Fontainbleau, France, to the simple pleasures of making Christmas tree ornaments or decorating a puppet theater with her children, she demonstrated a sense of delight, style and imagination.
Moving from the East Coast to Denver just after the Second World War, her paintings displayed both the intimacy of the Atlantic coast marshes and the exhilarating vistas of the Rocky Mountain West. Her paintings were exhibited at places as varied and distinguished as the American Watercolor Society, the New York Watercolor Society, the National Arts Club, the Denver Art Museum, the Yellowstone Art Museum and the Carbon County Arts Guild.
One of her most enduring and public works remains on display on the walls of the Grizzly Bar in Roscoe. In the summer of 1936, Phyllis and a group of friends joined Joyce on a summer trip West to visit Joyce's fiancee, the late William R. MacKay at his family's ranch, the Lazy E-L near Roscoe. The sisters and their friends collaborated in painting a series of murals on the barroom walls, celebrating both the spirit of the West and the impending marriage between Bill and Joyce.
Phyllis' artistic sense was matched by her strong sense of commitment to her community. She was an early and active leader in the League of Women Voters during the time she lived in Denver, a regular volunteer at a wide variety of school functions, assisted Meals on Wheels and was a constant and enthusiastic supporter of causes ranging from Planned Parenthood to the Sierra Club and National Public Radio. During her time living in Red Lodge, her advancing years did not deter her active engagement in civic causes. For several years she served on the Board of the Carbon County Arts Guild and conducted a series of art appreciation courses in her home. She was also deeply committed to local efforts aimed at retaining the authentic atmosphere of the community and resisting wholesale growth that would undermine the very things that made life in Red Lodge so special to her.
In addition to her artistic talents, Phyllis had a lively and inquiring mind. She was known for her powerful intellect and quick wit that both made people laugh and kept those around her on their toes. She was a life long student whose curiosity embraced everything from politics to natural history to literature and religion.
Phyllis was also known for her grit and determination. Following her divorce after 25 years of marriage to Dr. H. M. Morfit of Denver, she carved out a new life for herself, establishing new friends, building new relationships and exploring new avenues at a time when single women were at a strong disadvantage. Despite periods of great personal challenge, she never gave up - even in her final hours.
Phyllis Morfit was a rare and inspiring figure - complex, sometimes puzzling and impossible to ignore, but always reaching, striving and trying harder to be all she could be to everyone in her life. She will be greatly missed by us all: sons and daughters-in-law, Mason and Jane Bunker Morfit, Santa Fe, N.M., Michael and Christine Morfit, Washington, D.C., Fred and Claudia Morfit, Fairfax, Calif.; grandchildren and granddaughter-in law, Cameron and Ellen Morfit, New York City, Garrison Mason Morfit, New York City, Nicholas Simon Morfit, Claremont, Calif., and Olivia Jane Morfit, Fairfax, Calif.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Phyllis's home at 911 S. Grant St. in Red Lodge followed by interment in the Roscoe cemetery. A reception will follow at the Lazy E-L Ranch.
Memorials may be given to Brookside Home, P.O. 622, Absarokee, MT 59001 or the Carbon County Arts Guild in Red Lodge or Planned Parenthood.
