Everett K. Hawthorne
Everett K. Hawthorne, 87, of Billings, passed away Sunday morning, April 23, 2000, at his home. He was born in Red Lodge, on April 20, 1913, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Hawthorne.
Everett graduated from Bearcreek High School in 1932. He worked for Frontier Airlines for 27 years, retiring in 1978 due to ill health. In 1961, he married Della Pratt. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and two sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Della; his stepson, Larry Pratt and his wife, Sandy, all of Billings; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place and graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, April 28, at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Memorials to the Shiners Crippled Children’s Hospital, 911 W. 5th, Spokane, WA 99204. Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist has charge of arrangements.

Virginia Van Gorden
GLASGOW - Virginia Nesbitt Van Gorden, 79, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, at Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 1, at Nemont Manor.
Interment will be in Highland cemetery in Glasgow. Bell Mortuary is in charge.

Victoriano ‘Victor’ Vallejo
BROADUS – Victoriano “Victor” Vallejo, 57, died on Tuesday, April 25, 2000, at his home.
Visitation will be held on Friday, April 28 beginning at 1 p.m. at the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home. Vigil services will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday in the St. David’s Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. on April 29 in the St. David’s Catholic Church. Interment will follow at 5 p.m. in the family lot in the River View cemetery in Savage. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Broadus and Fulkerson’s Funeral Home of Sidney are in charge.

Donald W. Madden

Donald W. Madden joined his wife, Debbie in the presence of the Lord on April 22, 2000, in Billings, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born Aug. 15, 1944, in Long Beach, Calif., Don grew up on a homestead in Alaska and never outgrew his love for the outdoors.
After a tour of duty with the U.S. Navy serving aboard the USS Hassayampa in the Gulf of Tonkin at the beginning of the Vietnam Conflict, he returned to Alaska where he drove trucks during the construction of Trans-Alaska Pipeline.
On Christmas Eve of 1973, he married Debbie Gray in Alaska.
In 1991, they moved to Billings where he worked for Northern Line Layers until he was disabled by his illness.
preceded in death by his wife, Debbie, Don is the beloved father of five children, Tina Weyant (husband, Mark), Tara Marie, Donald Jason, Brittany Dawn, and Ashley Nichole Madden. He is a grandpa to Megan and Emily.
He also survived by his mother, Marjorie Madden; brother, Casey Madden (wife, Vicki); and sister, Carroll Knutson, as well as a niece and three nephews. And a very special and loving friend, Anne Yates. Don was a blessing to everyone he touched. He will be remembered for his open heart, generous spirit, and his devotion to God, his family and his many friends. His family is most thankful for the extraordinary love and support extended by Don’s neighbors and co-worker’s.

Funeral services will be held Monday, May 1 at 1 p.m. at the New Life Assembly with interment at Mountview cemetery.

Edward James ‘Ed’ Ekland
GLENDIVE – Edward James “Ed” Ekland, age 83, of Glendive, died on Tuesday, April 25, 2000, at the Glendive Medical Center Extended Care Facility.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 28, 2000, at Zion Lutheran Church with Pastor Paul Everett officiating. Interment will be in the Dawson County cemetery. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive is entrusted with arrangements.
Ed was born on Dec. 28, 1916, in Glendive, the son of Bertal “Bert” and Anna (Globstad) Ekland. He was raised and educated northwest of Glendive. As a young boy, Ed started working on the family farm.
He later went to work for Joe Holling for whom he delivered ice and then went to work for the Northern Pacific Railroad for a short time.
He met Ruth McGovern at a dance in Bloomfield. They were married on June 28, 1942, in Glendive. Following their marriage, they moved to the family farm where Ed returned to his life long love of farming. They continued to live on the family farm until 1997 when they moved into Glendive.
Ed was a member of the Glendive Moose Lodge and a lifelong member of the Glendive Elks Lodge. He worked with the Soil Conservation Service and had planted trees on many farms in Dawson County. He also worked at the Glendive Sales Yard for years. Ed enjoyed playing cards, raising cattle and working on the farm. Ed especially loved his children, grandchildren and his great grandson.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Ekland; his daughter, Bonnie Fehr and her husband, Lanny; his son, James Ekland and his wife, Sheri, all of Glendive; grandchildren, Richie Crisafulli and his wife, Jamie of Glendive, Brandie Crisafulli of Billings, Laci Fehr, and Brittani Ekland and Austin Ekland, all of Glendive; great-grandson, Jameson Crisafulli of Glendive; his sister, Bertha Mathison and her husband, Alvin of Glendive; and numerous other relatives. Ed was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Haakon.
Memorials are suggested to Zion Lutheran Church, 401 Riverview, Glendive, MT 59330.

Elmer E. Graham
LAUREL – Elmer E. Graham 72, died Monday, April 24, 2000, in the Billings St. Vincent Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in the Laurel Grace Bible Church. Interment with military honors will be held at 1:30 p.m. in the Hardin Fairview cemetery. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin is in charge.

Donald ‘Dick’ Bettcher
SHERIDAN, Wyo. – Donald Gene “Dick” Bettcher, 57, died Tuesday, April 25, 2000, at the VA Medical Center.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 28, at Kane Funeral Home.

Leonard Daniel Steinbacher
FORT BENTON – Leonard Daniel Steinbacher, 75, of Fort Benton, died Tuesday, April 25, 2000. Leonard died at home after a courageous battle with cancer. The Rosary is scheduled for Thursday, April 27, and funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 28, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fort Benton with burial at Riverside cemetery with military honors. Benton Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Leonard was born to Mary and John Steinbacher in their home in Montague on Oct. 23, 1924. He attended school in Montague until the eighth grade. Leonard then graduated from Fort Benton High School in 1942. Leonard enlisted in the Army in June 1944. He served in the 4th Armored Division and was wounded and captured in the Battle of the Bulge and was prisoner of war at Stalag 7A in Bastogne, Germany. Leonard received an honorable discharge in August of 1945. Leonard was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Big Sky Chapter of the Ex-POWs, and a 3rd and 4th Degree Member of the Knight of Columbus.
Leonard married Ruth Guy in Columbus, on April 7, 1951. They lived in Billings for two years while Leonard worked for Mulvaney Motors. They moved back to Fort Benton in 1953 where he worked for Farmers Elevator until 1956 when they took over the farm and mail route from his father. Leonard drove bus for the Geraldine School for 27 years. He also was a rural mail carrier for 19 years.
Leonard is survived by his daughters, Diane Gowin of Billings, Patricia Donovan of Superior, Rita Krueger of Billings, Cristine Steinbacher of Shelby, Shirley Hemmer of Federal Way, Wash., and Tracy Steinbacher of Fort Benton, and his sons, Fred Steinbacher of Billings and Richard Steinbacher of Galata and 19 grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, CJ (Speed) Steinbacher of Fort Benton, and his sister, Lillian Nagengast of Big Sandy.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth in 1996, his parents, his brothers, Lawrence, Daniel, John and Bob and sisters, Catherine, and Mary Alice.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Leonard’s name may be sent to the Peace Hospice of Chouteau County, Box 459, Fort Benton, MT, or the World War II Memorial in care of: Wal-Mart, ATTN: Cash Office, 701 Smelter Ave., Great Falls, MT 59404.

Perry N. ‘Red’ Svingen
MISSOULA – Perry N. Red” Svingen, 80, died Saturday, April 22, at the Utah State Veteran’s Home in Salt Lake City, Utah. Wasatch Lawn Funeral and Crematory in Salt Lake City is in charge.

John R. McWilliams
GRAND FORKS, N.D. – John Robert McWilliams, 92, died Tuesday, April 25, 2000, at home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday in Amundson Funeral Home of Grand Forks. Visitation will be for two hours before the service in the funeral home. Interment will be in Memorial Park cemetery of Grand Forks.

Anna Belle Foster
BASIN, Wyo. – Anna Belle Foster, 82, died on Tuesday, April 25, 2000, at the Washakie Medical Center in Worland.
Visitations will be from 1-5 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 12 noon on Friday at the Atwood Family Chapel. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, April 28, at the Mount View cemetery. Atwood Family Funeral Directors, Inc. is in charge.

Adele Bruce Zink
LAUREL – Adele Bruce Zink, age 73, of Laurel, died at Billings Deaconess Hospital on April 25, 2000, due to multiple myeloma after an 11 year bout with the disease. She was born on Aug. 11, 1926, to Ray and Lucille DeCells Bruce on a ranch near Town-send.
She was a teacher for 30 years, 28 of them in Laurel. She previously taught at a country school in Broadwater County, and was a librarian in Dillon while she attended college there.
Adele married Walter E. Stahl in Missoula in 1946. From this marriage were born two sons, Ken Stahl and Dave Stahl. The marriage ended in divorce.
In 1953, she returned to college, attending Western Montana College in Dillon where she received her two-year certificate. In 1966, she earned her degree in Billings.
In 1955, she married James D. Zink in Dillon, and the family moved to Laurel. Mrs. Zink taught school while Jim worked at the Cenex Refinery. To this marriage two girls ware born, Laurie Zink and Jaime Zink Fuhrman.
She is survived by her husband, Jim; her four children, Kenneth Stahl and his wife, Carol of Albany, Ore., Dave Stahl and his wife, Linda of Laurel, Laurie Zink and her husband, Steven Fogle of Corvallis, Ore., Jaime Zink and her husband, Roger Fuhrman of Boise, Idaho.; her four sisters, Bonnie Burgess of Missoula, Betty Bruce of Wyoming, Shirley Gerdes of Utah, and Martha Lea Johnson of Kalispell, and eight grandchildren.
Adele was known for her contagious sense of humor and her positive approach to life. Her life impacted many lives especially during her teaching career. She was a member of the Methodist Church in Laurel, and ADK, a sorority for teachers; and Sons and Daughters of Montana Pioneers.
Funeral Service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 29, at Laurel United Methodist Church. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Monday, May1, at Sunset Hills cemetery in Bozeman. No Visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to: Laurel Public Library or Laurel United Methodist Church.

Phyllis C. (Hoff) Hale
FOUNTAIN HILLS, Ariz. – Phyllis passed away at her home in Fountain Hills on Saturday, April 22, as a result of a massive heart attack.
She was born to Theodore and Catherine Hoff on June 25, 1939, in Billings. She graduated from Billings Senior High School and attended the University of Montana in Missoula for two years after which she was employed by Exxon Corp. at their Billings refinery.
Phyllis married Carl Hale in Detroit in 1966. She worked for the Chrysler Corp. for 26 years, retiring in 1995. She and her husband moved to Fountain Hills in 1997, following Carl’s retirement from Ford Motor Co. in 1997. She enjoyed interior decorating, golfing, painting and frequently modeled at style shows in the Detroit area.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Carl; her brother, James Hoff of Bridger; her sister, Louise (Don) Ross of Billings; her nieces and nephews and many friends.
Memorial services will be held in Fountain Hills. Cremation has taken place.

Betty W. Keil
YUMA, Ariz. – Betty W. Keil died Monday May 24 in Yuma. Betty was born to W. T. Waite on March 11, 1921, in Miles City, Mont., as the third of four children. Betty was a lifelong resident of Powder River County, Mont. She grew up on a ranch on East Fork Creek near Broadus and attended school in Broadus and Montana State College in Bozeman.
At college she met Dean Keil and they were married on Jan. 31, 1943. After the wedding, they traveled to Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., where Dean was stationed with the army. When he was sent overseas, she returned to Broadus.
When Dean was discharged, they began their lifelong partnership in ranching. They owned and operated Cross Ranch Co. of Powderville, Mont.
Surviving are their sons, Bill and wife, Mary Beth of Powell, Wyo., Bruce and wife, Barbara of Glendive, Mont.; grandson, Eric and wife, Kendra of Sagle, Idaho; granddaughters, Amy Welty and husband, Bret of Pocatello, Idaho, Mindy Gilbert and husband, Derek of Yankton, S.D., Rachael Anderson and husband, Cody of Great Falls, Mont.; grandson, Seth of Glendive, Mont.; and eight great-grandchildren.
Betty was a loving wife and mother, dedicated ranchwoman, proficient seamstress and avid quilter. She was preceded in death by her brother, W.T. Waite, and sisters, Ruth Waite and Barbara Waite Sampson. Memorial services are to be held Wednesday, May 3, at 2 p.m., at the First Baptist church in Broadus with burial on the family ranch at Powderville.
