Anthony Arthur ‘Tony’ Matta
>Anthony Arthur “Tony” Matta, 33, of Billings died at the Deaconess Medical Center on Saturday, April 22, 2000.
Tony was born in Crow Agency, on Jan. 7, 1967, a son of Tony Alcala and Tillie Kills Enemy. He received his education in Billings and as a young man was active in many sports activities including football, basketball and baseball. He was great with kids and in recent years had become a fan of the movies.
Tony lived in Spokane until 1998 when he returned to Billings due to ill health. Survivors include his mother, a sister, Angela Rose Matta, two nephews, Ross Matta and Devin Cross, and one niece, Cassandra Cross, all of Billings. He was preceded in death by his father in 1987 and his grandmother, Trinidad Alcala in 1985.
Visitations will begin Thursday morning at the Smith Downtown Chapel. Due to construction at St. Patrick’s Co-Cathedral, a service will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 28, at the Smith Downtown Chapel with cremation to follow. Should friends desire, memorials may be mailed to Angela Matta, 714 Coliseum, Billings, Mont., 59102.

Evelyn K. Scalise
LEWISTOWN – Evelyn K. Scalise, 62, of Lewistown, formerly of Roundup, died Monday, April 24, 2000, at the Montana Health Nursing Care Center.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 2, at the Montana Health Nursing Care Center. Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist was in charge.

Ernest A. Tomes
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Ernest A. Tomes, 98, of Ballantine, Mont., died Friday, April 21, 2000, at his home.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, April 24, at George Boom Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, at George Boom Funeral Home, Sioux Falls. Interment will be at Hills of Rest Memorial Park.

Jack Stuart Timm
LIVINGSTON – Jack Stuart Timm, 62, of Livingston, died Monday, April 24, 2000, at Fort Harrison Veteran’s Medical Center near Helena.
Cremation has taken place at Franzen-Davis Crematory. Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 28, at Franzen-Davis Funeral Home.

Margrette Myrl Neibauer
Margrette Mryl Neibauer passed away peacefully of natural causes on Sunday, April 23, 2000. Margrette was born Aug. 7, 1921, in Musselshell County to Carl and Blanche Meredith.
She was raised on the ranch in Pineview until marrying George Neibauer in June 1942. They farmed 10 miles west of Billings. She took great pride in her flower and vegetable gardens, especially raising irises. She was treasurer of Canyon Creek Club and a member of Big Sky Iris Club.
She will be remembered for her kindness to one and all, always making time to lend an ear or a hand, her infamous jellies, her green thumb, and her vibrant smile.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 57 years. She is survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Anita and Jack Hill of Whitefish and Norma and Tom Bonnike of Petaluma, Calif.; grandchildren, Brandi Kessler (Germany), Justin Kruidenier (Phoenix), Tony Ammirata (Whitefish), Samuel Hill (Denver); great-grandchildren, Perry, Sophie and Joana; her brother, Chuck Meredith; brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Cody Meredith; two stepsisters, Lorraine Warren and Patty Leuenberger.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 29 at Cremation or Funeral Gallery, 8th St. W. and St. Johns.

Phyllis C. (Hoff) Hale
FOUNTAIN HILLS, Ariz. – Phyllis passed away at her home in Fountain Hills on Saturday, April 22, as a result of a massive heart attack.
She was born to Theodore and Catherine Hoff on June 25, 1939, in Billings. She graduated from Billings Senior High School and attended the University of Montana in Missoula for two years after which she was employed by Exxon Corp. at their Billings Refinery.
Phyllis married Carl Hale in Detroit in 1966. She worked for the Chrysler Corp. for 26 years, retiring in 1995. She and her husband moved to Fountain Hills in 1997, following Carl’s retirement from Ford Motor Co. in 1997. She enjoyed interior decorating, golfing, painting and frequently modeled at style shows in the Detroit area.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Carl; her brother, James Hoff of Bridger; her sister, Louise (Don) Ross of Billings; her nieces and nephews and many friends.
Memorial services will be held in Fountain Hills. Cremation has taken place.

Ruth M. Braziel(1906-2000)
DENVER – Ruth Montana Braziel, 93, died in Denver, on Thursday, April 20, following complications of a heart attack. She was born in Billings in 1906 but shortly thereafter moved with her family to Gebo, Wyo. Returning to Billings in 1923, Ruth graduated from Billings High School in 1924.
Active in business throughout her life, Ruth held a variety of positions with, among others, Foley Bros. Wholesale Grocery, Chandler Todd Company, Armour & Co., and the Montana-Wyoming Association of Credit Men.
In the late 1930s and early 1940s, Ruth and her mother owned and operated The Pie Shop in downtown Billings – making what many thought were the lightest pie crusts in creation.. In 1949 Ruth and her sisters purchased the Paris Beauty Supply Co. of Salt Lake City. The business was moved to Billings in 1959 where it grew to be one of the largest beauty supply businesses in Montana. Ruth and her sisters sold the company in 1977. While continuing to maintain their home in Billings, Ruth and her sisters started spending part of their time in Mesa, Ariz., in 1979 and moved to Denver in 1996.
Ruth was active in the Billings community. A charter member of the Billings Zonta Club, an organization of professional women, she later served as its president. She was a devoted member of the Mayflower Congregational Church.
Ruth traveled extensively, loved to ballroom dance, often dressed in purple and, in her later years, was a diehard Denver Broncos fan. Tiny in stature, she had a warm smile that lit up a room and a gentle manner that captivated children.
Ruth was preceded in death by her sister, Beulah Walters, and her brothers, Wayne Braziel and Kenneth Braziel. She is survived by her sister, Zola Betz, and her niece, Evelyn McClearn, both of Denver; her sisters-in-law, Helen Braziel of Billings and Marvel Braziel of Santa Fe; nieces, Kathryn Braziel of Albuquerque, Dr. Rita Braziel of Portland, Ore., Janet Braziel of Corrales, N.M.; nephew, Richard Braziel of Albuquerque; and numerous grandnieces and nephews and great-grandnieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, at the Mayflower Congregational Church, Poly Drive and Rehberg Lane in Billings, Mont.

Ina Viola Prinkke
RED LODGE – Beloved Mother and Grandmother, Ina Viola Walimaki Prinkki, died peacefully in her sleep on Easter Sunday, April 23, 2000. Ina was born June 3, 1916, in Red Lodge, Mont., to John and Fiina Kukkola Walimaki and spent most of her life in the Roberts area. She was raised on a farm on Clear Creek along with her brother, Oliver, and graduated from Plainview school.
She married Emil Prinkki on Dec. 23, 1935, in Columbus, Mont., after a courtship that included community dances at the Fox Hall and picnics at the Kaleva. Ina was a homemaker and served on numerous boards and organizations, as well as writing the Roberts column for the Carbon County News. She was a member of the Ladies of Kaleva, Order of Eastern Star, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary, where she was elected to serve as Madam State President. While president, Ina enjoyed traveling to all the state Eagles auxiliaries with Ruby Hyvonen, who was the Eagles’ State Mother. Ina enjoyed giving herself to the Homemakers Extension Club and the Roberts Methodist Church. She was well known for her skills at reflexology and soothed many a friend with her touch. She also willingly worked in the Roberts community store and cafe when asked to. She loved playing bridge with the women in the Roberts community and visiting on the phone with her sisters-in-law. Ina resided in the Beartooth Hospital and Health Center for the past nine years, where she received excellent care from this extended family of caregivers and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 62 years and her brother. She is survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Ralph McCormick of Bozeman and Patti and Steve Keebler of Helena; grand and great-grandchildren, Kirsten Barrett and Jon Hypes (Las Vegas), Erika, Eric, Ivory and Jacen Thompson (Las Vegas), Justin, Annie and Madison Keebler, (Spokane), and John Keebler, (Helena); sisters and brothers-in-law, Ray and Ruby Hyvonen, Verna and Willix Seikkula, Beth Prinkki, Fran Hyvonen, Rosie Prinkki; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
She will be remembered for her Finn bread, her delight in her grandchildren, her sewing, her love of hot saunas and her quick wit and humor. Ina enjoyed solving crossword puzzles and won many trivia competitions at the Care Center, where she also entertained staff and residents with her singing old songs.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 27, at Roberts Methodist Church with Reverend Susan Waterson officiating. Dahl Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Ethel DeGuire Johnston
CONRAD – Ethel DeGuire Johnston, 94, died Friday, April 21, 2000, at the Pondera Medical Center of natural causes.
Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 26, at the First Presbyterian Church in Conrad. Interment will follow at the Crown Hill cemetery in Cut Bank at 3 p.m. Pondera Funeral Home is in charge.

Joanne M. Sindelar Webb
YAKIMA, Wash. – Joanne M. Sindelar Webb, 55, formerly of Miles City, died on Friday, April 21, 2000, at the Landmark Care Center.
Visitation will begin Wednesday, April 26, at the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 27, at 2 p.m., in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow in the family section in the Custer County cemetery.

Raymond A. Grant
JORDAN – Raymond A. Grant went to be with Lord on April 22, 2000. The son of Raymond A. and Fannie Bryant Grant of Miles City, he was born on Feb. 11, 1921, at Jordan, Mont. He lived on the family homestead on Woody Creek until the family moved to Jordan in 1931. He was salutatorian of the class of 1938 at Garfield County High School, and he attended Kinman Business College, Spokane, Wash. His first job was in Jordan with the “AAA” (Agricultural Adjustment Act). From 1941-42, he was employed by the Civil Service Commission in Washington, D.C. He was a stenographer for the Milwaukee Railroad in Miles City for 17 years. In 1960, Raymond became a licensed abstractor and worked at W.A. Mitchell Agency in Miles City until his retirement in 1979.
preceded in death by both his parents and his sister, Dorothy Grant, Raymond is survived by his sister, Lyonors (Clarke) Murnion of Jordan, his niece, Margie (Frank) Cristofaro of Auburn, Wash., his five nephews, Joe (Bev) Murnion, Jack (Charlotte) Murnion, and Nick (LeAnn) Murnion, all of Jordan, Dan (Dianna) Murnion of Forsyth and Tony (Pam) Murnion of Helena; 18 grandnephews and nieces; three great-nephews and nieces and countless honorary nieces and nephews who affectionately called him “Uncle Bud”. One of his greatest joys was being around children, and he remained young at heart throughout his life.
Over the years, he was involved in numerous church and civic activities. Philanthropic causes he supported include the Charles M. Russell Museum of Great Falls, Fort Peck Theater, John F. Kennedy Library, the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation, and the Range Riders Museum of Miles City, to name a few. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, F.O.E., Senior Citizens, and a 55 year member of the Miles City Elk Lodge. His interests included gardening, playing cards, dancing, bowling and socializing over dinner with his many friends. His annual barbecue during the Bucking Horse Sale was a favorite of many. He loved to travel, and he was able to visit every state.
He worked on various historical projects, including a history of the First Presbyterian Church of Miles City and, at the last, a compilation of all the homesteaders in Garfield County and the location of their homesteads.
Services will be held Wednesday, April 26, at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Miles City. Visitation will be held Tuesday until 3 p.m. and Wednesday until 11 a.m. in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Casket will be closed at the church. A vigil will be held on Tuesday, April 25 at 6 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Jordan. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Miles City and Jordan are in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the Garfield County Health Center of Jordan or to the Senior Citizens Drop in Center of Miles City.

Everett K. Hawthorne
Everett K. Hawthorne, 87 of Billings, passed away Sunday morning, April 3, 2000, at his home. He was born in Red Lodge, Mont., on April 20, 1913, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Hawthorne.
Everett graduated from Bearcreek High School in 1932. He worked for Frontier Airlines for 27 years, retiring in 1978 due to ill health. In 1961, he married Della Pratt. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and two sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Della; his stepson, Larry Pratt and his wife, Sandy, all of Billings; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place and graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, April 28, at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Memorials to the Shiner’s Crippled Children’s Hospital, 911 W. 5th, Spokane, WA 99204. Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist has charge of arrangements.

Phyllis Jane ‘P.J.’ Kimle
THERMOPOLIS, Wyo. – Phyllis Jane “P.J.” Kimle, 48, died Monday, April 24, 2000, at her home after a long illness of cancer.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 27, at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. Interment will follow at Monument Hill cemetery. Mortimore Funeral Home is in charge.

Della Mae Logan
Della Mae Logan, 72 of Billings, passed away peacefully with her daughter, Neshia at her side, Sunday, April 23, 2000, at Western Manor Nursing Home.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother, Jimmie Lee.
Della Mae came to Billings as a teenager and held many jobs while in Billings. Everyone knew and loved Della.
She is survived by her daughter, Neshia Cameron of Arizona, a brother, James Lee Logan of Oklahoma and a cousin, Christine Logan of Missouri, as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Special thanks is given to those who stopped by to visit Della during her final days.
Cremation has taken place. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Mountview cemetery with a reception to follow at the Western Bar.
Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist has charge of arrangements.

Thea W. Stolem
HINSDALE – Thea W. Stolem, 90, of Hinsdale and Bismarck, N.D., died Saturday, April 22, 2000, in Bismarck of natural causes.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Hinsdale Legion Hall with interment in Hillview cemetery in Hinsdale. Bell Mortuary is in charge.
