Melvin Galland
SUN VALLEY, Calif. –Sheridan County, Mont., native Melvin Galland, 76, died on March 29, 2000, at his home.
A memorial service was held at Forest Lawn Chapel in the Hollywood Hills on April 4. His cremains, along with his wife’s, will be interred in the family plot in Outlook at a graveside memorial service at a later date.

Robert L. Short
LEWISTOWN – Robert L. Short, 77, died Wednesday, April 12, 2000, at the Central Montana Skilled Nursing Center.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 15, at the Creel Funeral Chapel. Interment with military honors by Fergus American Legion Post No. 16 will be at the Lewistown City cemetery.

William ‘Buzz’ McDonald
MILES CITY – William R. “Buzz” McDonald, 74, formerly of Livingston, died on Thursday, April 13, 2000, at the Holy Rosary Health Center.
Private family funeral services will be held in Livingston. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Miles City is in charge.

George ‘Andy’ Anderson
CLANCY – George Wesley “Andy” Anderson, 75, died Wednesday, April 12, 2000, the VA Medical Center at Fort Harrison following a brief illness.
Visitation will be noon Saturday to noon Monday at Hagler-Anderson Mortuary. Church services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 17, from the Liberty Baptist Church. USMC interment unit will conduct military graveside honors. Memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans Service Foundation, P.O. Box 189, Fort Harrison, MT 59636-0189 or to the Liberty Baptist Church, P.O. Box 911, Helena, MT 59624.

L.G. ‘Les’ Hardy
L.G. “Les” Hardy, 85, of Billings, passed away early Wednesday morning, April 12, 2000, at Deaconess Medical Center. The son of Major and May (Bunting) Hardy, he was born in Butte on July 23, 1914.
On Sept. 22, 1935, Les married Opal L. Robbins in Butte. His family in-cludes his son, Les Jr. and his wife, Kay and grandchildren, Greg (Carol) and Karen Jull (Tom), and five great-grandchildren; his daughter, Carol and her husband, Charles Donnes; his son, Robert and his wife, Cookie and grandchildren, Chris (Toni), Amy Wilson (Joe), and Melissa, and one great-granddaughter; and his daughter, Nancy Hardy; his two brothers, William and Frederick Hardy; and numerous nieces and nephews. Les was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Opal.
Upon completion of his primary education, Les began his career in the construction industry as a carpenter’s apprentice. He went on to become a partner in Cahill-Mooney Construction of Butte. In 1945, they moved to Billings, where Les established a Cahill-Mooney branch office, later buying out and forming Hardy Construction in 1953. With the help of a group of exceptional employees, customers, and friends, his company has grown to flourish as a 3rd generation general contractor in the hands of his grandson, Greg.
Les had a love for fishing, hunting, skiing, and golf that he taught and shared with his children and grandchildren at various stages of his life. He and Opal enjoyed traveling and playing golf throughout the country later in their married life. Les was very active in the Billings community as a member of the Jaycees, the Billings Kiwanis, the Al-Bedoo Shrine, and the Hilands Golf Club. He was well known by all his friends and family for his elegant manner, presence, and demeanor, which brought him the nickname “The Duke.” His absence will be a great loss to all of us.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, April 14, at the First United Methodist Church. Private interment will be in Mountview cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 1242 N. 28th St., Billings, MT 59101, or the charity of one’s choice. Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist has charge of arrangements.

Edward H. Cheeney
GREYBULL, Wyo. – Edward Homer Cheeney, 76, died on Tuesday, April 11, 2000, at the West Park Long Term Care Center in Cody.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 15, at the Veile Mortuary Chapel in Worland. Interment will follow at 12 noon at the Ten Sleep cemetery in Ten Sleep.

James E. Ball
FORSYTH – James Edward Ball, 88, died on Wednesday, April 12, 2000, at the Veterans Hospital in Miles City.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, April 14, in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Forsyth. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 15, in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the family lot in the Forsyth cemetery.

Ruth Cady
Ruth Cady, age 88, of Billings, formerly of Lame Deer and Forsyth, passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2000, at her home in Billings.
Ruth was born near Lee, Mont., on the Rosebud Creek on May 14, 1911, the daughter of George W. and Hattie (Miller) Bradley. Her mother’s family came to Rosebud Creek in a covered wagon in 1881. There they shot a buffalo and decided to stay. They were one of the first squatters on the Rosebud Creek.
She attended country school at Lee. Ruth worked for various people in the community doing whatever needed to be done. Ruth married Earl “Mugs” Cady in Miles City in 1930. They continued working for area ranchers until 1936 when they moved to Slaughter House Creek where they farmed and raised livestock. They sold their ranch to Wilbur and Marie Smith, and in 1945, they opened their own gas station and convenience store in Lame Deer which they ran until the mid 1970s when their son took it over.
Ruth then moved to the Red Lodge and the Bridger area until 1998 when she moved to Billings. Ruth loved to work with horses. A special “Thank You” to Pat, Bill, and John at TLC Canyon Ridge Home for taking such good care of our mom!
Ruth is survived by three sons: Vance Cady and his wife, Moneda of Busby, Mont.; Bruce “Buster” Cady and his wife, Ione of Lame Deer; and George Cady and his wife, Roberta of Birney; two daughters, Claudia Stevenson and her husband, Bruce of Bridger, and Betty Lou Stokke and her husband, Fred, of Dillon; and a brother, Don Bradley and his wife, Phyllis of Forsyth. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, “Mugs;” three brothers, Claude, Paul, and Floyd; and three sisters, Dolly, Charlotte, and Alice.
Visitation will be held Friday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Forsyth. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 15, in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Forsyth. Interment will follow in the family lot in the Forsyth cemetery. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Forsyth is in charge of the arrangements.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the charity of ones’ choice.

Wilbur ‘Pat’ Lockman
SIDNEY – Funeral services for Wilbur “Pat” Lochman, 48, of Sidney, formerly of Poplar, will be 10 a.m. Saturday, April 15, 2000, at the Pella Lutheran Church of Sidney, with Pastor Morgenstern officiating. Interment will be in the Poplar cemetery at 2:30 p.m., under the direction of Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney.
Wilbur Patrick “Pat” Lockman, 48, will continue his law enforcement investigations at a new level. Pat passed away April 10, 2000, from complications of Celiac Disease at Billings Deaconess Hospital.
Pat was born to parents, Inez and Willie P. Lockman, in Poplar, on March 17, 1952. From a very early age, traveling with his dad, music, chasing criminals and girls were his greatest joys. Pat attended Poplar Elementary School and at the age of 13 moved to Boulder, where he received additional schooling. He then moved to Helena for a couple of years.
Later, he returned to Poplar and worked at A&S Tribal Industries, receiving all of the possible employee recognition awards. In September 1978, he moved to Sidney and joined the Richland Opportunities, Inc. Program, completing all of the objectives to attain independent living status. He worked at Hu Williamson Accounting Service, Job Service and various other local businesses.
Pat accumulated many friends and acquaintances throughout his lifetime. He lived a very full, productive and happy life. Patroling with John and performing his other honorary police work were an important part of Pat’s daily life. He has left us with wonderful memories to cherish and will be missed by many.
Pat is survived by his mother, Inez, of Billings; his oldest sister and guardian, Connie (Philip) Kulbeck of Billings; his younger brother, Clemance (Jamie) Lockman of Missoula; numerous nieces and nephews; Aunt Monica; Uncle Curley; several cousins, his ROI family and his buddy and adopted Dad, Sheriff John Grainger and his family of Poplar.
Pat has joined his father (1995); sister, Donna (1996) and grandparents. Memorials may be directed to the Roosevelt Drug Task Force, P.O. Box 280, Wolf Point, MT 59201 and the ROT Foundation, Inc., HC89 Box 5172, Sidney, MT 59270 and The Montana Celiac Association, 1019 South Bozeman Avenue #3, Bozeman, MT 59715.

Donald E. ‘Bud’ Miller
Donald E. “Bud” Miller passed away on Saturday, April 8, 2000, at the Western Manor Care Center in Billings at the age of 70.
Bud was born in Oilmont, Mont., on Dec. 6, 1929, a son of Harold R. and Myrtle (Stover) Miller. He was raised and educated in Shelby and later worked at the B&M Food Market there before enlisting in the Army. Bud served during the Korean Conflict, receiving the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and a National Defense Service Medal. He received an honorable discharge in 1955.
Following his discharge, Bud began driving truck and based in Rapid City, S.D. In the early 1970s he moved to Billings and continued his work as a trucker for Baker Transport. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Miller worked as a security officer at the Medical Arts North building in Billings.
Bud liked to socialize. Visiting with friends, playing cards or shooting pool were favorite pastimes. Although not much of a fisherman or hunter, Bud liked camping and could be counted on to keep the basecamp in order and the fires stoked.
Survivors include two sons, Donnie and Danny; a brother, Jack and his wife, Carol of Fromberg; and three sisters, Betty Weilker, Mary Jean and husband, Howard Reeser all of Shelby, and Doris and husband, Bill Root of Kalispell. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Harold, Leonard, Kenny, Glenn and Richard; and one sister, Margaret McCloud.
Visitations will begin Saturday afternoon at the Smith Downtown Chapel. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 18, at the Smith Downtown Chapel with military honors and interment to follow at Mountview cemetery.

Rick Neill
DENTON, Texas – Rick Neill passed away at his home in Denton on Sunday, April 9, 2000, at age 55 after a very courageous battle with cancer. He was born April 9, 1943, in Billings to William J. and Mary Anne Neill. He was a graduate of Billings Senior High School, graduated with honors from Eastern Montana College and earned his master’s degree from North Dakota State University in Fargo.
He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps ad was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant E-5. He was a high school educator ad coach, coaching football and track in Montana and Idaho for 17 years. He was also the head men’s and women’s coach at the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls for eight years.
He was an active member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and USA Track and Field. He was selected to coach the Yemen Arab Republic National Team in preparation for the 1988 Olympics. He was the head coach of the 1994 USA Heptathlon Team, coached at the 1989 U.S. Olympics Festival and at the 1996 U.S. Olympics Trials. He was Gem State (Idaho) Conference Men’s Track and Field Coach of the Year in 1984, National Junior College Athletic Association’s (NJCAA) Region 18 Coach of the Year in 1989 ad 1991, NJCAA Men’s National Coach of the Year in 1992, and received the U.S. Women’s Track Association Junior College Service Award in 1991. He was inducted into the NJCAA Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1997 and voted Teacher of the Year at Lewisville High School for the 1999-2000 school year.
Rick believed in God and was a loving and devoted husband. He was a man of discipline, deep convictions and total commitment. He eagerly shared his coaching knowledge with fellow coaches and athletes instilling in them life long traits to become productive men and women; his goal always being to bring about success.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Mona; her parents, Bernie ad Lila Wilson of Apache Junction, Ariz.; and her sister, Dawn and brother-in-law, Dennis Patterson of Minden, Nev. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. at the Max Goldsmith Stadium at Lewisville High School with a reception following at the high school. In lieu of flowers or plants it is suggested that memorials be made to the Rick Neill Memorial Fund, C/O Lewisville High School Cross County and Track Teams, Booster Club, 1098 West Main Street, Lewisville, TX 75067.

Margaret Elizabeth (McKinnon) Topp
Margaret Elizabeth (McKinnon) Topp was born Aug. 29, 1911, on a farm near Kensal, N.D., to Don and Ida Weber McKin-non, the young-est of seven children. The last surviving member of her family, she passed away Thursday, April 11, 2000.
She married Wilson R. Topp and they moved to Billings in 1934. To this union four children were born who survive her, Wayne (Nancy) Topp of Apollo Beach, Fla, Joyce (Elliott) Lentz of Redlands, Calif., Linda (Charles) Levy of Billings, and Larry (Phyllis) Topp of Missoula, along with 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
She was a member of Beth-lehem Lutheran Church since approximately 1950. Margaret dated on horseback and lived to fly in jets to visit family. She had a long and healthy life.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 10th St. W. and St. Johns, Billings, with interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements were made by Cremation or Funeral Gallery.

Dennis R. Davie
BUSBY – Dennis R. Davie, 46, of Busby died suddenly Sunday, April 9, 2000.
He was born July 5, 1953 in Cannnonsburg, Pa., a son of Francis and Shirley Mansfield Davie. He grew up and attended schools in Pennsylvania and California. Following his education, he worked as a mechanic and carpenter.
Dennis married Ruth Livingston in 1974 in California, and the couple moved to Montana and Busby in 1978. He was currently a self-employed mechanic.
He was a spiritual person, who loved the outdoors, to play golf, pan for gold and was always willing to help his neighbors. But he will especially be remembered for his sense of humor.
Dennis was preceded in death by his father.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth; a daughter Chelsee of the family home; three sons, Robert (Shannon) Cunningham of Billings, Torrey and Jacob Davie of the family home; his mother, Shirley Davie of California; one sister, Susan (Ron) Bradberry of California; two brothers, Terry (April) and Kenneth Davie of California; three grandchildren, Hailey Little Coyote, Chad and Aaliyah Cunningham and a special friends, Dewey Gust, Jessie Jaure, the late Gary Schindler, Butch, Ervin and Max Small
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the family cemetery near Busby. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Ruth Wilma Harnish
SHERIDAN, Wyo. – Ruth Wilma Harnish, 79, died Saturday, April 1, 2000, at Memorial Hospital.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 17, at Bethesda Worship Center, 1082 E. Brundage Lane. Memorials may be made to the Whedon Cancer Foundation, c/o Kay Roush, First Federal Bank, P.O. Box 6007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Gloria Blansky
HARDIN – Gloria Blansky, 58, of Hardin, passed away Sunday, April 9, 2000, in the Big Horn County Memorial Nursing Home following an extended illness.
She was born Sept. 10, 1941, in Chicago, a daughter of Theodore and Cora Agnes Capistran Remmele. She graduated from Hardin High School with honors in 1959. Following her education, she worked for the Miles and Ulmer Company in Hardin for several years. She began a career with the Montana State Department of Public Health and Human Services in 1969 and retired because of health reasons in 1991.
Gloria married Frederick A. Blansky on May 5, 1969, and the couple made their home in Hardin.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church, was an avid reader and enjoyed pinochle, bridge and crossword puzzles.
Survivors include her husband, Fred of Hardin; her close friend, Katie James of St. Ignatius; her aunt, Clair Remmele of Minnesota, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday in the Bullis Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the Fairview cemetery. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Hardin United Methodist Church.
