Edwin 'Ed' Maurer
HARLOWTON - Edwin "Ed" Maurer, 85, passed away Saturday, April 1, 2000, at Wheatland Memorial Hospital in Harlowton.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 4, at the Federated Church in Harlowton with inurnment to follow at the Harlowton cemetery. A coffee hour at the church will follow the services. Perkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

George John Reiter
George J. Reiter, 79, passed away Saturday April 1, 2000, at his home. George was born June 19, 1920 in Hesper, the son of George and Elizabeth Reiter of Laurel. George grew up in Laurel and entered the U.S. Army, serving in the infantry in WWII. He was a Montana National Guard member from 1940-45, during which time he served three years in the South Pacific Theatre.
George married the love of his life, Clara Ruff, Sept. 10, 1941. He was a wood worker and was also employed by Deluxe Check Printers until his retirement in 1984.
He is survived by his wife, Clara; three daughters, Dorothy (Marvin) Thompson, Gloria (Leroy) Roll, and Diana (Richard) Emmons; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Polly Kern, Ruth Flagher, and Lena Rupp. George was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Alex and Henry; and three sisters, Lydia, Marian, and Elizabeth.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Pilgrim Congregational Church. Interment with Military Rites will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to the Pilgrim Congregational Church, 409 S. 36th St., Billings, MT 59101.
Arrangements were made by Cremation or Funeral Gallery.

Willard "Wof" Spang
LAME DEER - The last of 13 children, Willard "Wof" Spang died on March 31, 2000, almost one month short of his 99th birthday. He was born in a log cabin on "Muddy Creek" near Lame Deer, Montana to Albin Spang and Lucy Cahill Harris on May 3, 1901.
His life began at a historic time when the Northern Cheyenne were adjusting to life on a reservation rather than roaming free. Visitors to the family home included such persons as Little Wolf, Two Moons and many of the survivors of the battle of the Little Big Horn. He received his education at a small country school where students arrived on horseback. In his youth he was well known as a horse "wrangler" helping his fellow tribesmen with the thousands of horses that existed on the reservation at that time. He participated in the rodeos of his day. excelling in the calf roping event.
He married Alice Yellowhorse on Sept. 6, 1926 and she died shortly thereafter, leaving him with a son, Norman. He married Jennie Spang on August 24. 1930. "Wof" was a very good provider for his family, he was well known throughout the country as an excellent carpenter, stonemason, plasterer and house builder. Much of his handiwork is still in evidence on the reservation as well as in the towns surrounding it. During the depression era he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corp. as a supervisor. He also worked for many years for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in the Plant Management Department. When the Northern Cheyenne Tribe created a Utilities Program to provide water and waste disposal to the community, "Wof" was selected to direct the program. He worked in that capacity for many years and when he retired he left one of the most successful programs managed by the Tribe.
He was most proud of his children and grandchildren, taking a personal interest in each one of them. He was a talented "fiddle" player and they were his favorite audience. Hunting was a special pleasure he enjoyed. It provided food for the table but, more importantly, a bond with his sons that death can never erase- The memories of their trips into the beautiful reservation hills will last a lifetime.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jennie. He is survived by six sons, Norman (Clarice) of Idaho Falls, Idaho; Lawrence of Lame Deer; Alonzo (Clarice) Birney; James (Aladine) and Leo (Maxine) of Muddy Creek; and, Zane (Sandra) of Ashland; 24 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
A wake was held on Sunday, April 2, at 7 p.m. in the community room at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Lame Deer. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 3, at the Boy's and Girl's Club gymnasium in Lame Deer. Burial will follow at the family cemetery on Muddy Creek. Rausch Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jack Eggum
GLENDIVE - Jack Eggum, age 57, died Saturday, April 1, 2000 in the Deaconess Hospital in Billings. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 4, 2000. A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, April 3, at the Chapel of the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Glendive. Rite of Committal with Military Honors will follow in the Dawson Memorial cemetery in Glendive. Silvenale-Silha Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
Jack was born on Sept. 3, 1942, in Williston, N. D. the son of Hardys and Mae (Hentzy) Eggum. He was raised and educated in Richey, Montana until his Junior year of high school when the family moved to Glendive. He graduated from Dawson County High School in 1961. Jack also attended Dawson Community College. He worked as an oilfield roughneck after his schooling. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1963 until 1965 when he was discharged. Jack returned to Glendive after his discharge and started working for Halliburton Oil Field Service. He retired from Halliburton in 1980 after 15 years as a supervisor. Jack then went to work for Supron as a production foreman until 1990. Jack was an oil field consultant from 1990 until the time of his death.
Jack enjoyed laughing and the special times he had with his family. Jack was an avid rodeo fan, especially bullriding, he enjoyed hunting, cribbage, working on old cars and he loved flying. Jack also enjoyed having coffee with his friends, which for him was tea time. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, the Jaycees and Badland Drifters Car Club.
Jack is survived by his wife, Marlys of Glendive; three sons, Corey of Glendive, Jeremy of Seattle, Wash., and Hardys and Alyssa Wright of San Diego, Calif.; his mother Mae Eggum of Glendive; a brother Orris of Spanaway, Wash.; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, including Sheena Ditchavage and Shawn Henry.
Jack was preceded in death by his father and a sister, Bonnie.
Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association or to the charity of the donors choice.

William Ehret
BAKER - William Ehret, 84 years old, of Plevna, passed away Friday, March 31, 2000, at the Fallon Medical Complex in Baker. He was born Sept. 1, 1915, the son of Jacob and Elizabeth (Schroth) Ehret. He grew up and attended the Prairie Park Country School south of Plevna. Bill started working with his father on the farm as a young man. He was married to Bertha Hoffman on Sept. 24, 1944, in Plevna. Together they continued to operate the family farm while raising their family. Bill also worked for Herbst Construction while farming. He semi-retired from farming and construction in the mid 1970s. Bill always stayed busy, working part-time for the Fallon County Cemeteries, custodian of the Emanuel Evangelical Church and the Green Thumb. In 1986, Bill retired due to failing health. He especially enjoyed having family gatherings and being with his grandchildren. Over the years Bill and Bertha also enjoyed traveling throughout the country and Canada. He was a member of the Emanuel Evangelical Free Church of Plevna and served as usher for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Bertha of Plevna; a daughter, Barbara Knapp and her husband, Connie of Baker; two sons, Floyd Ehret and his wife, Janice of Plevna and Kent Ehret and his wife, Pat of Baker; four sisters, Maggie Losing of Baker, Lydia Scheuffele of Yakiama, Wash., Bertha Leischner of Oregon and Hilda Sieler of Baker; seven grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and three adopted grandchildren.
His parents; a sister, Alvina Riggs; a granddaughter, Sheila Knapp and twin grandsons, William and Patrick Ehret preceded him in death.
A prayer service will be held Tuesday, April 4, at 7 p.m., in Stevenson's Funeral Home in Baker. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 5, at 11 a.m., in the Emanuel Evangelical Free Church in Plevna with Pastor Bruce Inion officiating. Burial will be in the Plevna Community cemetery. Stevenson Funeral Home of Baker is in charge of the arrangements.

Thomas Melford Fisher
MILES CITY - Thomas Melford Fisher, age 84, of Miles City, Mont., passed away Saturday, April 1, 2000, at the Holy Rosary Extended Care Facility.
Visitation will begin Monday, April 3, at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 4, at the Trinity Lutheran Church. Interment will follow in the Custer County cemetery in the Eagles Section.

Gerald Richard (Jerry) Frisby
Gerald Richard (Jerry) Frisby died at home surrounded by his family on March 30, 2000, of congestive heart failure. He was born in Basin, Wyo., on Oct. 27, 1927, to George and Mary Frisby.
His family moved to Billings when he was a year old. He has been a lifelong Billings resident, graduating from Billings Senior High in 1946. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Navy for two years. On completion of his navy service, he attended Eastern Montana College for one year. On May 14, 1950, Jerry married Donna Shamanoff. They would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in May.
In 1955, Jerry established City Service Plumbing and Heating and in 1967 bought the Roto Rooter Franchise. He was active in both of these businesses all of is adult life. Jerry served on the board of directors of the National Roto Rooter Franchise Assn. from 1991-94.
Jerry had a great passion for his family and friends. He instilled his sense of honor, incredible determination and boundless imagination in his children. His favorite places on earth were the Beartooth Mountains and all of Montana. Jerry found no other place in all his travels that came close to the beauty of his home place. He left part of himself behind with his wonderful wood carvings and his legacy of love. We will miss his insight, wit, quirky sense of humor, but mostly, his love.
He is survived by his wife, Donna; his son, Bill Frisby of Billings; four daughters, Susan Armstrong and her husband, Ray of Billings, Deborah Hahm and her husband, Mike of Helena, Sheri Pogue and her husband, Gary of Billings, and Katie Nordstrom and her husband, Tim of Red Lodge; his nine grandchildren, Ryan, Brady and Melissa Armstrong, Aaron, Somer, and Michael Hahm, Will and Kimberly Pogue, and Abbie Nordstrom; four sisters, Elizabeth Lutton and Jane Kincaid of Billings, and Pat Rankin, Katherine DeCourcy, and two brothers, Nick and Ted Frisby, all living in California.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held 3 p.m., Monday, April 3, at Mayflower Congregational Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Shrine Crippled Children's Hospital, 911 W. 5th, Spokane, WA 99204 or Big Sky Hospice, P.O. Box 35033, Billings, MT 59107-5033. Michelotti, Sawyers and Nordquist has charge of arrangements.

Donald G. Gibson
GLENDIVE - Donald G. Gibson, age 95, of Glendive, died Friday, March 31, 2000, at the Glendive Medical Center Extended Care Facility.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 4, at the United Methodist Church in Glendive with Pastors Carter and Myrna Havner officiating. Interment will be in the Dawson Memorial cemetery in Glendive. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
Donald was born Jan. 10, 1905, in Glendive, Mont., the son of Grant and lnez (Broughtion) Gibson. He received his early education in Glendive. In 1922 he graduated from high school in Des Moines, Iowa. He married Marguerite "Peggy" Denny on June 10, 1926, in Des Moines, Iowa. Donald returned to Glendive, where he owned and operated a ranch near Lindsay. Marguerite preceded him in death on Nov. 28, 1983. Donald married Margaret Austin Shirby on July 16, 1985, in Glendive. He had been a mail carrier in the Lindsay area and had served as county commissioner for 18 years.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Glendive.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret of Glendive; his son, Denny and his wife, Joan of Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada; his grandson, Lance and wife, Debbie of Fort Collins, Colo.; his granddaughter, Denise of Vancouver, British Columbia and three great grandchildren, Cory, Eric and Alex. Memorials may be sent to the Frontier Gateway Museum of Glendive or the donors choice.

Russell Hawkins
Russell Hawkins was born Oct. 31, 1919, in Spring Grove Township, Wis., to Robert and Hazel (Marsh) Hawkins. He was the fourth of five children. Russ was called home to be with the Lord on March 31, 2000, at Saint Vincent Hospital in Billings, Mont.
Russ served as a Sergeant with the 502nd Parachute Regiment, 101st Airborne Division in the European Theater from Nov. 6, 1941 to April 12, 1945, receiving a purple heart for injuries received in Holland. Upon his return, Russ married Verla Meinert. Russ and Verla spent the next six years operating a family farm in the Davis, Ill., area. In 1951, Russ and Verla moved to Boulder, Colo. Russ worked as a policeman in Boulder for 12 years, including four years as a Detective Sergeant. He took over management of the Lazy VV Ranch in Boulder on Dec. 18, 1964, and retired from that position on Jan. 18, 1985. Russ and Verla moved to Billings at that time to be with family. Following his retirement, Russ worked for Dr. Don Woerner at Laurel East Veterinary Clinic.
Russ is survived by his wife, Verla; his daughter, Betty and her husband, Paul Miller; his son, Gail and his wife, Gloria, all of Billings. He is also survived by five grand children, Heidi (Miller) and Todd Swenson of Bismarck, N.D., Grant and Keri Miller, Russ and JaLynn Hawkins, and Martha and Rebecca Hawkins, all of Billings.
Russ Hawkins was a member of Mount Olive Lutheran Church. He loved the Lord, his wife, family and his country. He will be missed by many.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, April 4, at Cremation or Funeral Gallery, 29 8th Street West. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m., Sunday, April 2, also at Cremation or Funeral Gallery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Saint Vincent Hospital and Health Center Nursing Education Fund or Mount Olive Lutheran Church.

Darrel Ralph Heinze
THERMOPOLIS, Wyo. - Funeral services for long-time resident Darrel Ralph Heinze, 70, will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, April 3, 2000, at Mortimore Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Monument Hill cemetery.

Anna Marie Hesseling
Anna Marie Hesseling, 77, went to meet her dearly beloved husband, Bob, on March 31, 2000.
Anna was born on April 26, 1922, in New Baveria, Ohio, to Michael and Josephine Gershutz. She was the youngest of seven children. Ann graduated from beauty school and was a beautician for many years. She married Robert Hesseling on Sept. 28, 1946, in Ada, Ohio. Their life together took her to many foreign countries including Columbia, Peru, Paraguay, Dominican Republic and Africa.
Ann is survived by her daughter, Patti Yonts; grandchildren, Allison of Billings, Nathan of Oregon City, Ore., and Brian of Billings; brother, Paul Gerschutz; brother--in-law, Don Schey, both of Findlay, Ohio, plus many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brother, Vincent Gerschutz of Hamier, Ohio; sisters, Dorothy Dieringer of Wauseon, Ohio, Ursula Unterbrink of Elida, Ohio, Margaret Schey of Findlay, Ohio and Marcella Seibenick Kohler of Wapakoneta, Ohio.
A special thanks to the Holy Rosary lunch group that gave her something to look- forward to, her friend Elie McFate and family for the hours they kept her company, and the Hospice staff who made it easier for the family to keep our Nana at home.
There will be visitation at Dahl Funeral Chapel on Monday, April 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m., Monday at Dahl Funeral Chapel. Funeral Mass will be Tuesday at 11 a.m., at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Rite of Committal will be at Holy Cross cemetery, followed by a luncheon in the basement of Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Memorials may be made to Big Sky Hospice, 1041 N. 29th St., Billings, MT 59101.

Morgan Hopkins
LAUREL - Morgan Hopkins, 78, of Laurel, died Friday, March 31, 2000, at Valley Health Care Center.
Cremation has taken place. At his request, no memorial will be held. Inurnment will be at Mountain View Columbarium in Butte. Arrangements were made by Cremation or Funeral Gallery.

Mary LeVeque
SONNETTE - Mary LeVeque, age 98, of Sonnette, Mont., passed away Saturday, April 1, 2000, at the Holy Rosary Health Center in Miles City.
Visitation will begin at 1 p.m., Tuesday, April 4, at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Broadus. Vigil services will be at 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 4, also at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 5 at St. David's Catholic Church in Broadus. Rite of Committal will follow in the family lot in Valley View cemetery.

Louise Loveland
Louise Loveland, 93, of Billings, passed away Friday, March 31, 2000, at St. Vincent Hospital.
She was born August 16, 1906, in Stahl, Mo., the daughter of Earl Raymond Moots and Hettie May Walters Moots. Her family moved from Missouri to Montana in 1908. They lived in the Fromberg area, Wilsall, Mont., and in 1921 moved to the Huntley area. She graduated from Billings Senior High in 1926. She married Lilbur Daylong in 1926 and he preceded her in death in 1929. She then married Edwin Loveland in 1935 and he preceded her in death in 1937.
Louise worked for St. Vincent laundry. She was a lady of great generosity, caring for all her family and opening her home to many people in need. She was an avid crocheter, a great cook and enjoyed gardening and her flowers. Louise loved little children, had a great sense of humor and had a very sharp wit. She enjoyed poetry and had an excellent memory all her life.
Louise moved to Sheridan, Wyo., in 1995 to live with her daughter, Ruth. In June of 1998, she moved to Laurel to live with her daughter, Doris and soon after became a resident of Beehive Homes in Laurel.
She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary of Billings.
Survivors include her daughters, Ruth (Jim) Townsend of Sheridan, Wyo., and Doris Hill of Laurel; six grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren; four step granddaughters and their families; two sisters, Hazel Cooper of Lakewood, Colo. and Patricia (Jim) Otis of Herministon, Ore.; four brothers, William (Marion) Moots of Ballantine, Paul Moots of Helena, Woodrow Moots of Huntley and Morris Moots of Shepherd and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Elnor; three stepsons, Floyd, Gorden and Paul Loveland; one granddaughter, Pat Townsend Kinsel; three sisters, Lola Walter, Nora Stene and Gladys Tyrrel and three brothers, Carl, Albert and James Moots.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Tuesday, April 4, at Smith West Chapel, 304 34th St. West. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Memorials to the charity of choice.
