He married Ellen Anne Phillips on Nov. 26, 1958, and the two moved to Dillon, Mont., where he graduated from Western Montana College in 1961.
After graduation from Western, Phil taught and coached for two years at Frazer, Mont. Phil worked for over 20 years with the U.S. Forest Service in Livingston, Mont., during the summer months. In the fall of 1963, Phil and Ellen made their home in Richey where he taught and coached until his retirement in 1999.

As a coach, his team achieved numerous district and divisional championships in both track and volleyball. In 1982, he was named Montana State Athletic Director of the year. In 1983, he was nominated for Montana State Coach of the year. In 1991, Phil was voted Region 7 Athletic Director of the year and was a National Nominee for Athletic Director of the year. Phil received his most prestigious award in August of 1999 when he was inducted into the Montana Coaches Hall of Fame. Phil felt that he couldn’t have accomplished any of the successes in his life without the personal successes of each of his children, as well as the athletes that he coached throughout the years.
Phil had a great love of the outdoors. He was a skilled fisherman and golfer and he loved to work in his garden. One of Phil’s greatest passions in life was his family. Nothing gave him more pride than a grandchild’s smile. Overall, his greatest passion was coaching. Phil would always say that a good coach was only as good as his athletes were. Phil was indeed a great coach. During his acceptance of his coaches Hall of Fame award, Phil explained that his love of coaching and his dedication to sports stemmed from his love of children and his desire to guide them to success.
Once the lines are chalked, the pit raked and the hurdles adjusted, one can almost bet the Mr. Robinson will be in the stands or in the infield. He will always respond to the call, just as a sprinter responds to a starters gun, on his feet, heart pounding, straining for the tape, cheering his athletes on. Because once a coach, always a coach.
Phil Robinson will never be forgotten. His memory will live on forever in those who knew and loved him.
