John M. “Jack” Slaughter
PLENTYWOOD – Memorial services for John M. “Jack” Slaughter will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 5. Pastor Ryan Wickman will officiate at the service at Plentywood Lutheran Church; private scattering of cremated remains will take place later at Sheep Herder’s Monument, near Peerless. Jack, 73, died of esophageal cancer Saturday morning, May 27, 2000, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital in Plentywood.
Jack was born at Peerless Sept. 7, 1926, the son of Jess and Beulah (Motschenbacher) Slaughter. He grew up on the family farm there, graduated from Peerless High School, and worked with his father on the family farm. He married Marilyn Brooks April 5, 1946, at Scobey. They farmed with his parents for the next 10 years before they moved to Billings, where Jack worked as a diesel mechanic for Cummins Diesel. Later, he worked for the Dow Oil division of Dow Chemical Company, as a diesel truck mechanic in North Dakota, Nebraska, Texas, and California. After Jack retired from Dow, they returned to Peerless; Jack kept everyone’s diesel equipment and machinery in top shape. “Jack’s Repair” always seemed busy ... whether in his daughter and son-in-law’s shop, on neighbor’s places, or wherever something broke! Six years ago, Jack and Marilyn moved to Plentywood, where he worked for Mike Kavon at KDR. His family remembers he was always patient with his family of four daughters; he took the whole gang on an annual trip to share his love places of natural beauty throughout the West. He loved to hunt big game and birds; and fished whenever and wherever he could wet a line. His wood shop produced a stream of knick-knacks, birdhouses, shelves, and decorations for his family and for sale, both as a hobby and as a productive home business. Jack was a gentle, caring man who deeply loved his family and the Lord; was very close to his sons-in-law, doted on his grandchildren, and always put his concerns for Marilyn’s feelings ahead of his own. He freely gave of his time and skills to help anyone he could.
Jack is survived by his wife, Marilyn, of Plentywood; and by three daughters and their families: Donna Larson and her husband, Pat live at Peerless; Anne Brumfield and her husband, Terry live at Reed Point, Mont.; and Linda Buckner and her husband, Aubrey live at Alvarado, Texas. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Donna’s children, Patrick, Troy, Joshua and Jessica; Anne’s children, Cody and Travis; and Linda’s children, Jennifer, Brody, and Lucas; and by seven great-grandchildren. Jack has two surviving sisters, Marian Pearce, of Edmonds, Wash., and Carol Dighans, of Peerless; and a host of friends, who are as close as family; folks who have always been there for Jack and Marilyn, and whose love is as appreciated as it has been endless. Besides his parents, Jack was preceded in death by a daughter, Jackie Slaughter, a brother, Gary, a sister, Helen, and by a granddaughter, Heather Larson.
Fulkerson Funeral Home of Plentywood has charge of arrangements.
