Dolores A. Teigen
CAPITOL – Dolores A. “Dodie” Teigen, 68, died at her home on Sunday, May 28, 2000, after a three-year, very intensive battle with cancer.
She was born May 13, 1932, in Billings County, N.D., near Fairfield, to Daniel and Frances Obrigewitch Hauser. The family moved to Bozeman, Mont., in 1938. After her father left the family, Dodie helped her mother raise her younger brother and two sisters.
She attended school at Holy Rosary in Bozeman, graduating from high school in 1951. During the summers she worked on ranches as a cook and housekeeper and did child care. During the school year, she worked as an usher and cashier at the Ellen Theater. It was there that she met John O. Teigen, Jr., of Capitol, Mont., who was attending Montana State University.
Dodie and John were married in Bozeman on Oct. 28, 1951. They returned to the ranch south of Capitol to work for John’s father. In 1953, they moved to Bozeman, Billings and later to Livingston, returning to the ranch in 1957. Three children were born: John III, David Arnold and Joan Frances. The family moved into Camp Crook, S.D., in 1960 so the children could attend school. Dodie worked at the post office and the cafe while John worked for the Forest Service. In 1970, they moved back to the home ranch, where they have lived ever since.

She organized the “Parade of Flags” at the NACD convention. John and Dodie attended meetings across the nation, forming many lasting friendships.
After their son, John III, was exposed to rabies while treating a sick Heifer, Dodie successfully fought for the registration of strychnine for rabies control, battling all the way to the federal hearing in Washington, DC. During her campaign, the State Livestock Departments of Montana, Wyoming and South Dakota supported her.
In 1992, John and Dodie leased the ranch to their son, John III. They spent the winters in the California Desert and summers at the ranch until the 1999-2000 winter when Dodie was not able to travel.
Above all else, Dodie took exceptional care of her family as a wife, mother, homemaker and cook. A devoted friend to many, she unselfishly shared her time and compassion. She was an accomplished seamstress, sewing shirts for John, the children and grandchildren. She made quilts and afghans for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren that will be forever cherished. She enjoyed gardening, attending painting classes and doing ceramics. Her Nativity sets are family heirlooms. For years, she entered her many crafts at the Harding County Fair and won numerous trophies and ribbons.
