Joan loved beautiful things and had a passion for the Victorian Era. She was an avid collector of antiques and glassware. She enjoyed going to garage sales in the morning and then spending the afternoon cleaning and polishing her new-found treasures.
Joan loved animals and later in life became active in rescuing abused animals, a heartbreaking task most ordinary hearts could not endure. She married Howard Leroy Wehrung in 1957. Joan dedicated her life to caring for her family. She instilled love and a bond of closeness that tied her family together. She deeply loved her five grandchildren and was very involved in their early years until distance separated them.

Marynell Heringer
Our loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, and friend died on June 4, 2000, surrounded by family after a courageous battle with lung disease. Marynell was born Feb. 20, 1930, to Bartley J. Curtis and Nellie Mae O’Hara Delaney. Nellie homesteaded in the Judith Mountains, and Bart reached Billings in 1892 after a three-year covered wagon trip that took him from Ipswich, S.D., to Edmonton, Canada. Marynell’s Aunt Mary Connolly, married to John Connolly of the Connolly Saddlery Co., was born in the covered wagon, the last of six children, at Lavina, Mont.
Marynell grew up on her family farm, which is now the location of Pop’s Putt Around. Her mother homesteaded what is now Central Park, where she planted many of the trees. She loved to ride horses, twirl the baton, and play tennis. She attended Fratt Memorial School and was a member of the first graduating class of Billings Central Catholic High School. She attended Holy Name College and graduated from the University of Washington with a drama degree. She later earned a teaching certificate from the University of Montana. After college, she returned to Billings, where she was active in teaching summer youth theatre and athletic programs. She also worked as a choreographer for KTVQ when it was founded.
Marynell met the love of her life and her life long companion, Charles J. Heringer Jr., at a church dinner in St. Patrick’s church. They were married forty-six years and from their union were blessed with seven children, their children’s spouses and 26 grandchildren. Mom provided unending love, support and encouragement to her children and husband. Family and home came first, and Mom centered her life on giving to others.
Marynell enjoyed acting, singing and dancing in the Billings Children Theatre, as well as Billings Studio Theatre. Mom was actively involved in Mayfair and Women’s Golf Association, and she was a member of P.E.O. Chapter 5. For 25 years she volunteered her time, energy, and creative choreography to the Billings Central Hilighters and to school musicals. Mom was never too busy to become involved in her children’s activities or to do the many things a mother does simply because she loves her family.
Golf was the passion of her life. She took up the game at the age of 24 and quickly became a Club Champion at YCC. She was a Hall of Fame Player in Montana and was the founder and the first winner of the Tournament of Champions held annually in Billings. Mom was proud of her two holes-in-one and played competitively in State, County and various Club Tournaments. She was inducted into the Montana Women’s Golf Association Hall of Fame in 1993. One of Mom’s greatest joys was teaching her children, grandchildren and friends the game of golf. She believed golf taught people the lessons of life. Mom knew golf and always had a tip to improve everyone’s game.
Another passion was watching her grandchildren’s many activities. The grandchildren could always count on grandma to watch their ball games, recitals and musical programs. Almost every night grandma and grandpa traveled throughout the city, attending as many of the grandchildren’s games as they could. The grandchildren are truly blessed to have their grandparents be such a significant part of their lives.
Marynell is survived by her loving husband, Charles J. Heringer Jr., and her seven children and their spouses, as well as her 26 grandchildren: Susan and Jack King (Kevin, Bryan, Casey, and Erin); Bucky and Geri Heringer (Travis, Kelcy, Jenny and Tanner); Bartie and Ron Lebsock (Chris, Malt, Shawn, Nick and Connor); Mike and Pam Heringer (Jessica, Daniel, Michael, McLain and Jordan); Judy and Dave Hallett (Paul, Charlie, and Mary Kate); Kevin and Jill Heringer (Lindsey, Cassie, and Eric); and Shawn and Judy Heringer (Ashley and Rachel). Her 26 grandchildren adored their grandma. She was preceded in death by her father, mother, brother Bill, and sister Louise.
